2003 Felipe Alou San Francisco Giants Game Worn Home Jersey (Bonds Patch)

During his 17-year career spent with the Giants, Milwaukee & Atlanta Braves, Oakland Athletics, New York Yankees, Montreal Expos, and Milwaukee Brewers, Alou played all three outfield positions regularly (736 games in right field, 483 in center, 433 in left), and led the National League in hits twice and runs once. Batting regularly in the leadoff spot, he hit a home run to begin a game on 20 occasions. He later became the winningest manager in Expos history, leading the team from 1992 to 2001 before rejoining the Giants in 2003.
This home cream colored San Francisco Giants jersey was worn by manager Felipe Alou during the 2003 baseball season. Unusual retail style tagging used by Alou on the field (purchased directly from the Giants with team stamp inside tail). Russell Athletic size 48 wash flag tag in collar, second Russell Athletic wash tag on tail. Giants team patch sewn on left sleeve above embroidered Russell logo. Scarce Bobby Bonds memorial patch on the right sleeve. Jersey exhibits light evidence of use, primarily in the form of wash wear. Letter from the Giants included.

I noticed the mention of the retail tagging on this jersey. Is this something that the Giants routinely make a habit of doing? I've seen other game-used Giants jerseys in the past that came from Dick Dobbins that were also retail tagged jerseys. Do any other teams do this? It just seems unusual. Are these retail-tagged jerseys made of a different material or have any other differences from regular-tagged jerseys?

When I saw the retail tagging on this jersey, I made it a point to speak with the individual who purchased this jersey directly from the Giants (this individual's name is listed on the LOA from the team). I will also mention that I have a great deal of respect for this individual's knowledge of San Francisco Giants jerseys in general. It is my understanding that this jersey was the only one of its kind (with retail tagging) sold by the team as game worn. The retail tagging isn't something I had ever seen, which is why I wanted to make sure we traced the ownership all the way back to the Giants. The tagging is the only major difference between this and other jerseys worn by the Giants in 2003.

Can you post photo of the Giants letter?

          Jimmie,

The letter is on an original piece of Giants letterhead and states that the jersey was game worn by Felipe Alou during the 2003 season. The LOA also makes mention of the size of the jersey and the Bobby Bonds patch on the sleeve. The LOA has a scanned signature of the President and Managing General Partner of the Giants, and lists the purchase date of the jersey as 11/03/03. I hesitate to post a scan of the original LOA on the site because it lists the name of the individual who purchased the jersey from the team (and I don't have his permission to do so). With that in mind, I hope these details are sufficient.
