"Photomatched" '83 Walter Payton in New Heritage Catalog...Really? Smh

Not only were these heat pressed on to begin with, not stitched and the "H" is way off, the placement isn't even close.

Holy crap, that's embarrassing. Maybe it was a legit Payton jersey that someone added a fake patch to. But if one part of it is fake ....

I read the entire description thinking that maybe they would give some explanation but there was no mention of it.

    Hi Folks,

You are correct that the GHS patch on the jersey in the image of Payton is not the same one that is currently on the jersey. As noted in our Letter of Photomatch on the auction listing, the original screened patch was removed sometime after this image was taken, and replaced with a stitched patch in a lower position on the jersey. We did find images of Payton from later in the 1983 season that did have a stitched patch similar to the one that is currently on the jersey, so that patch may have been replaced during the season. The photomatch was made based on the alignment of the mesh holes with the custom screened numbers on the front and left sleeve of the jersey, and marks on the numbers. Hope that answers your questions on this.

For anyone that has questions about one of our photomatches, whether as a potential bidder or just an interested party, we always encourage questions and are happy to explain our findings directly. Just send us an email at info@resphotomatching.com.

Why choose a photo from the Rams game if he wore the new patch vs. Tampa (assuming they wore orange that day), Minnesota and the Packers?

Images from games later in the season were not clear enough to see the alignment of the mesh holes with the custom screened numbers. The image we made the match to from 11/6 was clear enough to see that alignment, which is what allowed us to make the conclusive photomatch.

You should post those late season game pics anyway to see if the patch alignment look right.

The iron on patch was only used in 1 game (11/6 vs Rams). Decision was made to honor Halas with a patch but one could not be sourced fast enough but the iron on one was. I bet that whomever created it, might have missed what the team wanted, which was a football with GHS initials in it.
Equipment staff tried removing the iron on patch after the Rams game but it left glue residue on the jersey and instead of scrapping the jerseys, they decided to sew a jersey material patch over the area where the patch was.

I own the only known jersey with the iron on patch still on the jersey. It must have been at the bottom of the pile and some staffer decided to just cover the patch without removing it. I also own several jerseys from that season that have the patch removed and the area covered with jersey material.

This jersey look all correct to me. Whoever winds up with it, will have an amazing jersey! One of handful photomatched Sweetness jerseys...

On a side note, McMahon did not have a patch ironed on in the Rams game:

I found some low-res footage of the Vikes game on YouTube. The jersey and the screengrabs seem to match up.

Great info Samets! Yes Slats7 those are some of the shots we saw from that later game, but yes not clear enough to be conclusive for us unfortunately. We can't post images like you mentioned unfortunately due to licensing restrictions (in most cases it's in violation of copyright to post an image without licensing it). Only can license images to be part of our side-by-side photomatch graphics with our letters.
