Lightbulb Re: MLB uniforms...this will be fun

While this will be a first leaguewide for MLB, this has happened before with individual teams. The Kansas City A's in 1963 had a set of off-yellow vests of a non-flannel material made by Wilson that carried nicknames and/or first names. Bill Fischer, for example, was FISH and Sammy Esposito was SAMMY. Then, in 1976, the Atlanta Braves started the year with nickname/first name bearing home jerseys, also by Wilson. Jim Wynn was CANNON, Dick Ruthven was RUFUS, and Maximino Leon was MAX. This came to a halt, however, when Commissioner Bowie Kuhn, a known stick-in-the-mud, told the Braves to stop wearing them after owner Ted Turner tried to advertise one of his TV stations on the back of Andy Messersmith's jersey, adding a NOB of CHANNEL above the number 17.

Individual players have also done the same thing, especially on Oakland. Vida Blue's later A's jerseys had his first name rather than his last, Billy Conigliaro hag a NOB of BILLY C. in 1973, and, for his brief stint there in 1977, Dick Allen's #60 gamer had a NOB of WAMPUM, for his hometown in Pennsylvania.
