    RIP Earl Weaver

A great strategist and manager who entertained us with all-time classic tirades.

quite agree. he is the manager who convinced me on the field that pitching and defense are the cornerstone for a competitive team.

Ron Luciano wrote some of the best Earl Weaver stories in his various books. The Umpire Strikes Back among others.

The Earl of Baltimore. Great manager who also entertained those of us who watched him guide the Orioles during the time they were the best organization in baseball. The Oriole Way. So glad he was able to attend and participate in his statue unveiling ceremony last season. RIP #4.

    Lightbulb Re: RIP Earl Weaver

Weaver was one of a handful of managers and coaches from the 1970s who had cigarette pouches sewn inside their jerseys in order to carry a pack of smokes around and light up when need be. It's not PC, but it's good collecting nostalgia.

There was an ariticle in Beckett Baseball Montly that had a story about a guy who bought a Weaver jersey for $1 at flea market (I think) that had a cigarette pouch in it. The buy knew it was authentic and got Weaver to sign the jersey at a show. Pretty cool story!
