Re: Show off your clear shell helmets

Awesome pics Robert. I'm pretty sure I used to own and sold the VaTech a few years back. I belive it was made into a table lamp and had a hole in the facemask at the bottom if I'm not mistaken. If you know who has the Minnesota Gophers (which is more than likely a salesman sample as the Gophers had stripes on that style of helmet or a high school helmet) or the ISU helmet, please shoot me an email.

Robert what amazing pictures and diversity! I truly appreciate your sharing these...I do not have a clear shell yet boy I am feeling the 'need' to add one. Thank you for sharing!

Robert, thanks for posting all of those amazing photos of clear shell helmets! The Minnesota Vikings clear shell is especially cool! I am wondering if the Vikings clear shell was a prototype? I have never seen a photo of any Vikings player wearing a clear shell helmet during a game.

Thanks for sharing - the clear shells were an interesting piece of football helmet history.

I believe I read somewhere - maybe over on Helmethut - that Kelley was the distributor for MacGregor helmets in the southwest - pretty much had the accounts of all the old Southwest Conference teams (i.e. the state of Texas), plus covered Oklahoma and some other surrounding states. When MacGregor decided to get out of the business he bought the molds, designs, etc. from them and kept them in production.

Didn't Kelley and MaxPro eventually merge sometime in the 1980s?

Here's a Ole Miss MacGregor helmet from 1970. An all-original helmet with original hook-ups.

I know absolutely nothing about football helmets, so I'm guessing this would be considered a clear-shell helmet:

This isn't my helmet; I took this photo at the Pro Football HOF in Canton last weekend.

Yes - I suspect it was a MacGregor sales sample or something made up for a trade show so equipment managers could see both how clear the shell is (compared to how the old Riddell RT's yellowed) and so they could also see the padding.
