Boston Celtics' new alternate road uniform
Celtics News | Nov. 21, 2005
For the first time in the history of the Boston Celtics franchise, the team is adding a second road uniform (See picture below) that blends the best elements of traditional design with a distinctive contemporary look.

Recognizing the NBA trend of issuing both “throwback” and “redesigned” jerseys, the Celtics, who already play in “throwback” jerseys, have created a look that captures the energy of today’s team. On Friday, November 25th, when the Boston Celtics host the Charlotte Bobcats at the TD Banknorth Garden, the team will unveil their new secondary road uniforms for the hometown fans. Thereafter, the new uniform will be worn for select road games only.

The body of the uniform will remain green, like the existing road uniform, however the design elements are distinctly different. Inspired by the 1946-48 uniforms, they pay tribute to the Celtics’ long and storied history, while modernizing the look.

The first distinct change that fans will notice is that BOSTON is emblazoned on the jersey front. The organization began writing CELTICS on their home and road uniforms in the 70’s, but prior to that BOSTON always had appeared on the road uniform. Black is used as a secondary color on the uniform, which gives it a bolder, graphic look. For example, the lettering and numbers are black with a white outline.

The shorts include a triangular insert on the side with a shamrock centered in the shape - an element that reflects back to an original uniform design of the late 40’s.

“The new uniforms are the perfect blend of old-school Celtics tradition and new-school style,” said Celtics captain Paul Pierce. “Our team is excited to wear these new uniforms, and will do so with pride.”

Celtics Hall of Famer JoJo White added, “I like the new look personally, and I am glad to see that the BOSTON is back on the players’ chests.”

The new uniforms will be available beginning November 25 at the TD Banknorth Garden Pro Shop and on Celtics.com. In addition, the team will auction off the original, autographed game worn jerseys of Paul Pierce and Ricky Davis online at Celtics.com, with the proceeds benefiting the Boston Celtics Shamrock Foundation and its associated charities.
