Cal Ripken Jr. 1988 Road Baltimore Orioles Game Worn Jersey

An all time Fan Favorite, Cal was a shortstop and third baseman in Major League Baseball who played his entire career for the Baltimore Orioles from 1981 to 2001. A 19-time MLB All-Star, Ripken is considered one of the best shortstops to ever play the game. At 6' 4" (1.93 m), he pioneered the way for the taller and larger shortstops. He was raised in Aberdeen, Maryland, by a baseball family. His father, Cal Sr., was a long-time coach in baseball who managed the Orioles in the late 1980s. Ripken attended Aberdeen High School as did his brother Billy, who later played second base for various teams, including the Orioles.
Ripken earned the nickname "Iron Man," doggedly remaining in the lineup despite numerous minor injuries. He played in a record 2,632 straight games spanning sixteen seasons, from May 30, 1982 to September 20, 1998. He played his 2,131st consecutive game on September 6, 1995, against the California Angels, breaking the 56-year-old record set by the "Iron Horse" Lou Gehrig, the legendary New York Yankees first baseman. Ripken hit a home run in game 2,130 and game 2,131, moving fans to the point that his 2,131st consecutive game was named Major League Baseball's "Most Memorable Moment" in MLB history.
His awards are numerous – he was the 1982 AL Rookie of The Year; the 1982 AL Most Valuable Player……the list goes on and on. Ripken was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility on January 9, 2007.
This road gray Baltimore Orioles jersey was worn by Hall of Famer Cal Ripken, Jr. during the 1988 season. Tagged on the tail with a Rawlings size 48/wash tag. Tagging on the tail also includes an embroidered "T" swatch tag (indicative of the jersey being tapered), a "Set 1 1988" flag tag, and a 2" extra length flag tag (as is customary on most Ripken gamers). This jersey has been hand-signed by Ripken below the #8 on the front (authenticated by Steiner Sports). The left sleeve of this jersey has a heat-pressed felt-like "EBW" patch, worn in memory of owner Edward Bennett Williams. "RIPKEN" is affixed to the back of this jersey on a nameplate. The Rawlings logo is embroidered in white on the right sleeve. Jersey exhibits extensive evidence of use, including fraying to the logo, letters and numbers, and puckering to the logo, letters and numbers. Included is a letter from MEARS, who graded this jersey an A8, adding three points for outstanding use.

    Hello Nate,

We have reworded the statement on the to read "This item was consigned by Rob Steinmetz." That is probably a better wording since the goal of the statement is to disclose to potential bidders that the item was consigned by Rob.

Please feel free to let me know if you have any other questions.

unless i'm mistaken, judging from the unique fraying, it seems to be the same jersey as this one:

anyhoo, for the ripken experts out there, when did ripken begin wearing a size 48?

i guess george once owned it as well:

the confusing part for me is that on 7/29/06 george posts pics of "his 1988 ripken road gamer":
    http://www.gameuseduniverse.com/vb_f...50&postcount=6

then on 3/2007 he asks for opinions on a 1988 ripken road gamer that he's contemplating purchasing:

anyway, ironmanfan once said he has a 1988 ripken road gamer. i'm curious how the 2 jerseys stack up.

    Rudy,

Just to clarify, nowhere do I make mention of " contemplating purchasing" this jersey, I was just seeking info on the jersey on 2 seperate instances, not sure what is confusing you..... Yes, I did own this jersey at one time..sold it on EBay to someone who said it would be in his collection forever and I understand today it is in Rob Steinmetzs' "collection" consigned to GUU. Just to clarify chain of ownership as I know it..

    George
