How can you tell if a jersey is game used or just team issued? I mean couldn't I pick a team issued one up on ebay and play a real game with buddies in it and then look game used. I just don't know. I bought a "gameused" Tyrone Braxton today on Ebay and believed 100% it was genuine, but then I found two more one ebay that admittingly were team issued but not necessarily game used. Can I send it to PSA or SCD when I get it and verify whether it is game used or not? If so, help from ANYONE with this process would be great. Here is a link to the new Braxton jersey I picked up and the Bettis and Armstrong jerseys that are team issued. Let me know what you think. Thanks, Joe

Joe:

You mention that you "bought a "gameused" Tyrone Braxton... and believed 100% it was genuine". What was it that convinced you of it's authenticity prior to your purchase, and what is it about the existence of the seemingly unrelated Armstrong and Bettis jerseys that have you now concerned?

Just a couple of other quick observations and/or comments:

From what I can gather, if you carefully read both the eBay item's description as well as the follow-up Q&A, it would appear that A) the jersey is game worn and signed; B) the gloves--though both signed--are not listed as having been worn; and C) the pants would seem to be only team issued.
Unless there is other documentation included which was not shown/listed, the depicted COA only attests to the authenticity of the gloves' autographs; nothing else.
Can wear be fabricated? Absolutely! It is for this reason that it is important that you know and trust those from whom you make your purchases. With this I refer back to the first half of my initial question: What was it that convinced you of it's authenticity prior to your purchase?
You asked, "Can I send it to _____ when I get it and verify whether it is game used or not?" Any number of firms and/or individuals (including ESC... see http://endzone.pscoggin.com/Authenticate.htm), will render an opinion on an item purported to be game-used/worn, but remember, that no matter who is offering the opinion, it is just that--an opinion, not a verification. BTW, to the best of my knowledge PSA only grades cards, packs & tix with PSA-DNA authenticating autographs; I don't believe SCD any longer offers any sort of authentication service at this morphed into MEARS some time ago.Best regards,

Patrick,

Thank you for your response. Are you setting me up to prove I am nieve? :) I believed it was game used because it says it was and I NIEVELY believed that that was his only jersey from the regular season (I guess because the college jersey I have of his is the only one from that year). I then found these other two jerseys that were the exact same style and cut, but were only "game issued". The bottom line is your right, noone will know without a shadow of a doubt for sure. I will take his feedback #1 but the fact that if the jersey was drug through the mud, why not the pants too AND if your going to go through that much work and know it will look game worn, why waist your time on TB and not someone better like say Bettis. I got it for a steal and I am confident enough in it's authenticity. I just paniced for a moment because I have never bought an NFL gameused before. Thanks for setting me straight.

Joe

Joe:

My query was no way intended to "set you up" in any fashion, only to gage your level of experience and point out the pitfalls of dealing with eBay sellers.

As both I and countless others have pointed out, the most useful tool in authenticating an item is your own knowledge regarding an item of interest. I've personally found that "doing my homework" has served me much better in allowing me to sleep at night than any COA/LOA or 3rd-party "expert" opinion ever could.

The other often touted premise in collecting is know and be able to trust the seller with whom you're dealing. eBay can indeed be a marvelous vehicle for adding to a collection as there are indeed hidden gems to be found, though one must usually wade waist deep through a ton of garbage in order to unearth them. Items found at eBay can run the gamut from those that are just poorly described by uninformed sellers (most often the source of the true "finds" for those who know what they're looking for) to those that are vaguely described or intentionally misrepresented by less than scrupulous sellers who may be seeking to pass an item off as something which it is not. A meticulous reading of the item's description will often lead to questions needing clarification. One must always be sure that these questions are satisfactorily answered before moving forward.

I repect your opinions as not only are you a jersey collector, but a Broncos jersey collector and an authenticator of ONLY Broncos jerseys. I may send it to you to be looked at or I may just trust my gut that its good. It's so hard to know. All my other jerseys are their college jerseys that I bought right out of the equipment room here at NDSU.

Thanks again,

Joe
