No, I still think you're missing something here.

I did see the original auction for when the item was at $3,000+. Only one sinbgle bid has been retracted since. For it to go that high in the first place, this bidder had to have been challenged that high (for example, if the current price is $3,000, it is because there is a 2nd high bid of $2,900+ or something like that).

I think that people are playing games with this auction, and these people are probably using assumed names. The guy who retracted the bid has been on ebay supposedly for 3 days, has bid on 8 things and retracted all of these bids. The guy he beat has a high number of bid retractions as well.
