Arod Bat on Ebay

November 15 2005 at 1:01 AM Robert (Login Rboitano (http://www.network54.com/Profile/Rboitano))

Their are several problems with this bat, the COA from SCD states that the bat is from 1993. If you look at the Louisville Slugger label it matches the labels from 1998 with the compressed design as compared to the 91-97 era. I cannot read who graded the bat and signed it, can anyone verify who that is? I have seen a few block letter Arod bats from 94-95, I thought that Arod signed a contact with Louisville after the 95 season. What does everyone else think about this bat?

Robert,

The bat markings match the 1986-89 era for MLB pro bats. Sometimes these bats are used by minor leaguers, as I'm sure you know. I didn't realize that AROD had a contract with L.S. in 1993, either. I have seen these bats before and I never gave them a second glance because I did not think they could be good with the script name on the barrel (as opposed to block letter). Troy Kinunen and Dave Bushing signed the letter, as was normally done with SCDA letters and has carried over to MEARS (at least for the bats, gloves, and uniforms I've seen/owned). Dave Grob may respond here, but you can also go to the MEARS website and ask them on their forum. They generally respond pretty quickly. If you do ask them, please report back to gameusedforum members as I'm sure this will interest other AROD and bat collectors. The bat got an A7 score, so that must mean that there is some information about the provenance, correct (I may be wrong about this)? The crticial question is whether AROD had a contract with L.S. in 1993.

I agree with Robert

The label (oval) on that ARod bat sure looks like the version that started in 1998. The font is different than pre-'98 bats, but the easiest way to tell is the placement of the registered trademark symbol. Pre-98, it was positioned in the space between Louisville and Slugger and centered below the "le" in Louisville. Starting in 1998, the symbol moved down and over -- it is positioned directly under the last "l" in Louisville and just to the right of the "r" in Slugger. The 125 also "moved" -- pre-1998, the "2" was over the dotted "i" in Louisville, but starting in 1998, the "1" in 125 is over the dotted "i".

When I see this combination of 1998 labeling and the "Louisville Slugger" under the player's name, I'm thinking promo bat.

So what you guys are saying is that even if AROD had a contract with L.S. in 1993 and the script name on the barrel is correct, the bat still cannot be good because of the oval font? I'm not disagreeing, I'm just asking for clarification. I was focusing more on the script name on the barrel as the big issue.

Yes, it's the font in the oval

November 15 2005, 11:19 AM
The font used in the oval started in 1998... five years after this bat was supposedly produced. If you have a current LS bat and an older one (late '80s, for example), compare the ovals then look at the ARod bat. It should match the older bat, but it actually matches the current bat.

DAVE BUSHING HAS POSTED ON THE MEARS

November 16 2005, 9:23 AM
website that this was incorrectly authenticated. It wasn't even close, and some simple labeling comparisons from forum members uncovered this. If Dave can't even get his area of expertise right - Bats, then why should I feel confident in his new found expertise of game used jerseys(now that Dan Knoll is no longer working for them)?

From MEARS bulletin board...

MVP ALEX RODRIGUEZ 93 ROOKIE GAME USED BAT SCD AUTH.
November 15 2005 at 10:45 AM Dave Bushing (Login DaveBushing1)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

An SCDA letter was issued for an item currently on Ebay: MVP ALEX RODRIGUEZ 93 ROOKIE GAME USED BAT SCD AUTH., item number 255039

The Ebay item number is: ARODS FIRST LOUISVILLE SLUGGER-A PERFECT MATCH Item number: 8723825728

A MEARS subscriber asked me to review the letter and we found a label period was listed on the letter to be in error.

The actual letter states: 1993 Alex Rodriguez L/S bat A7

In reality, the bat was manufactured during the 1997/98

We have contacted the ebay seller and offered him the following:

1. If you want to keep the bat, please re submit it for a correct letter

2. Please return the bat with proof of purchase and MEARS will purchase the bat back.

3. You may keep the bat and we will pay the difference in value between a 1993 jersey versus a 1997/98

We have double checked A-Rods records and the bat was ordered during the 1997/98 label period.

The corrected information will be updated to the MEARS bat census.

I posted a response to Dave Bushing asking how the bat can be a 1997-98 bat when it has 1986-89 barrel markings.

For those interested, there is now a more complete dialogue on the MEARS website regarding this bat. The website is: http://www.mearsonline.com/ (http://www.mearsonline.com/) under "Bulletin Board."
