During the 2017 season, the Aberdeen Ironbirds wore a specialized jersey three times to support an area non profit organization and on 08/22 after they wore them for the last time, they auctioned them off. Here is the jersey that Ryan Ripken wore those games:

Picked up a couple of 500 HR guys last month. Ortiz HR #479 and an '83 Reggie with heavy use. Bats sure changed between these two eras.

Just added a 1946 Del Wilber home Cardinals jersey to the collection. I already owned Wilber's '46 road jersey (what are the odds?), so I now have a matched set.

Home and road flannel set from the 1940s? Incredible, Jeff...that is a rarity for any player/team combination. Congrats!

Hey Jeff, can I ask your opinion of those BCW jersey display cases? I've been using the Caseworks brand and love the museum grade glass they use but I like BCWs mirror option allowing the front of the jersey to be seen (somewhat). My question is do they look nice on the wall considering they are just a plastic box? I don't want to display a three thousand dollar jersey in a case that detracts from it. Also, does the plastic scratch easily? My fear is cleaning them and having the cloth leave fine scratches all over the case which only magnify when light hits them from the right angle. Lastly, is the hanger designed in a way that protects the jersey from getting bumps on the shoulders? If you can help me out I'd appreciate it! Cheers

Joe, I've had these cases for years and really like them. Because they're clear, they don't detract from the jersey. I think sometimes, the case overwhelms what's inside. Not with these -- it's like the jersey is hanging on the wall, but it's protected. They don't scratch if you clean them according to the instructions. The hangers could leave bumps, I suppose -- I'd think that depends on the style of jersey being hung and where the end of the hanger hits the shoulder/sleeve. But, the hangers are really wide and curved, so they're much kinder than most hangers. I've never had an issue with bumps. My favorite thing is how easy it is to change out a jersey -- pull the lid off, change the jerseys out and drop the new one back in (I like to rotate my collection.) I have 12 of these in my house. :)

Another Flannel for my MLB Collection:

1968 New York Mets Road - Ed Charles

The jersey had been sent down to the minors and had a number change. I normally don't mind that, but these numbers had shrunk considerably and made the jersey look very odd. I removed the numbers myself, and also washed out the signature since it wasn't signed by Charles (the original player that wore the jersey). I then sent it to Lon Lewis to have period correct numbers sewn on. Just got it back today from Lon and I'm very happy with the final result.

I'll post some pics of the restoration process in my next post.

Here are the photos of the original jersey as I purchased it, photos after I took off the signature and numbers (you can still see some residue and old dirt under the numbers), and then after a spin or two in the washing washing machine.

Nicely approached and done. I don't believe that anyone in the hobby is better at quality restorations than Lon is. He was the choice of the late Dick Dobbins, and should be the choice for just about anyone.

Paul Konerko autographed game used LVS cracked with MLB Holo. Always wanted a Konerko gamer and they are surprisingly tough to find. I do have to hide this from my Cub friends when they visit so I don't lose my street cred. :D

Giancarlo Stanton game used Marucci cracked with MLB Holo. Bat shows awesome use with bat weight marks, deep seam impressions, ink transfers and grass stuck in the pine tar. It's authenticated to a top of the 9th bases loaded single which plated two Marlins at Coors Field.

Charlie Blackmon game used Old Hickory uncracked with MLB Holo. Took me a while to find a Blackmon Bat with MLB authentication that was for sale. This is actually my favorite bat of this lot.

Odubel Herrera game used LVS cracked with rare Lizard Tape. Took me a while to find evidence of Odubel using a LVS with Lizard Tape but my research paid off. I was able to find photos and some game footage of him swinging a similar if not the same bat.

1963 Bo Belinsky Los Angeles Angels home flannel:

The jersey is in great, all-original shape, from a team and era that is tough to find. It has direct provenance from a former Los Angeles/California Angels clubhouse employee and lifelong friend of Bo's.
Belinsky had quite a life - a background of growing up poor, finding success as a pool hustler, then in baseball gaining reputation as a wild partier in the minors, outweighing his tremendous stuff. He finally got his first big shot with the expansion Angels, who drafted him from the Orioles roster. As a rookie, he threw the first no-hitter in MLB in the state of California (against his old team, Baltimore) and truly gained instant celebrity status as a man about town. He was more well known for dating actresses like Mamie Van Doren, Ursula Andress (Bond girl), Ann Margret, Connie Francis and Tina Louise (yes, Ginger). He later married a Playmate of the Year, divorced, then married and divorced the Weyerhaeuser paper heiress. His time with the Angels more or less ended when he had a hotel room fight with an elderly LA Times sportswriter. The story was the writer came by the hotel inebriated in the middle of the night and challenged Bo to a fight and so, Belinsky threw a glass of water in his face, punches were thrown and they found the writer unconscious with blood coming out his ear. The writer was tight with the Angels GM, so Bo was traded, he bounced around baseball and just flamed out. He battled severe substance abuse for years, then got clean and sober and became a counselor against alcoholism in his later years. In SoCal baseball, he was a cautionary tale about untapped potential, the million dollar arm, ten cent head type of story.

2001 Derek Jeter GU bat - Home Run and 1st career 5-5 gamer

I picked up my 5th Jeter Home Run bat, one that also produced his first career 5 for 5 game. He had a double and home run included in the 5 hits for this game, a 7-3 win over Boston.
The use is phenomenal; a heavy coat of mota stick with cleat marks and distinct seam impressions all around the barrel.

1989 Juan Samuel 1/4 Zip jacket

This is really neat.
I'm very much aware of Starters jersey manufacturing (other sports) as well as the jackets, but was this just about the beginning of Starter stuff in the MLB?
I'd be interested to know what year they got a license for apparel.
Also, kinda neat that after being a wal mart brand for so many years theyve once again got a license ( or were bought by someone who already had one ) and we are now seeing the reproductions a la Mitchell Ness.
I wonder how the Vintage gear guys feel about this... if they are excited they get new stuff, or if itll water down the original.

Anywho, congrats on your pickup!

Great item to have, and is a style I didn't have until today. The current style has the cartoony batter logo that was used in the Bill Veeck era of the team in 1976-80.

My 2017 total was embarrassing, by my standards (3), but with financial and health issues, as well as my wife's recuperation from knee replacement surgery, I only got to 4 games (all Chisox). Season's end total (career): 1,714

Your point is a good one, Joe, and I liked the old AL and NL baseballs better for similar reasons. Of course, there were the two times I caught MINOR LEAGUE baseballs at Major League BPs, but that's another story for another time.;)

Minor league balls at a major league game!!! Yeesh. At the risk of sounding spoiled/elitist, that stinks. Looking forward to hearing that story.
On a somewhat similar note, I am a 44yo man with the This Week in Baseball theme song as my ringtone. Having said that, I have trouble identifying with this whole Ball Hawk Community thing. They have a right to do whatever, I get it, but it just seems regressed. Don't get me wrong, if I go to a game and accidentally catch a ball with my son I am ecstatic because I'm sharing that experience with him. I just do not feel the need to film catching every ball I catch and post it on Twitter. Or maybe I'm just getting to be an old fuddy-duddy, which is probably the case....

The Ballhawk Community, as you phrase it, has good and bad points. Most of the regulars are pretty sociable with each other, and sometimes hang out together away from the ballpark. Occasionally, 2 or more will take a road trip to nearby ballparks, or independently travel to Florida for spring training and meet up. All of 'em are solid baseball fans, and most are more than adequate at baseball history. Some play in pick-up leagues.

The biggest drawback is that a few of the guys (not all, but more than 1 or 2) take their status as a Ballhawk WAY too seriously. Rules are comprised by some as to what constitutes a catch you can count in your totals, some will berate others if they're seen asking (begging, in Ballhawk-speak) for a baseball, and generally will act is if being a Ballhawk is on a par with being a member of Seal Team 6 or the Green Beret. One a number of years ago (no longer active) asked me to help him sell a lot of 100 BP catches he made for $1,000. When I informed him that you could buy smaller lots on eBay for less than half his per-ball price, he (seriously) said that his should be worth more because they were caught by a Wrigley Field Ballhawk. :p The one Waveland Ave. shagger who posts on GUU occasionally, Dave Davison, is a decent guy who doesn't get too full of himself.

On the minor league baseballs, I had it happen twice: One was thrown to me by Ellis Burks of the White Sox that I tracked down, and was an Official Midwest League ball (the Sox had a Midwest League team in South Bend, IN at the time). The other was a tailing Dave Henderson foul ball that I made a nice catch on in the aisle not too far from the LF corner at County Stadium that was a PCL ball.
