I know Troy is looking into this, and will most likely take it down, but just wanted to give people a heads up about this doctored Musial Adirondack bat:

http://sports.mearsonlineauctions.com/1951_1957_Stan_Musial_St__Louis_Cardinals_Pro_Stoc-LOT114047.aspx

As you can see from the photo, there is a 6 w/ an underline on the knob, however, the same exact bat sold on Paragon a few years ago and at that time had a 3 on the knob w/ no underline. The bat was authenticated by PSA who also noted the 3 on the knob.

Here is the Paragon listing:

You can see the knob much better in the PSA letter/photo here:

Nice catch. That's a pretty impressive job matching the marker fade.

Looks like the bat has been taken off of Mears.

Here are the photos for future reference:

So what responsibility does Troy have at this point?

In my opinion, I would think he should contact Paragon Auctions and find out who the buyer of the bat was, and if it just so happens to be the same guy that sent him the bat to be auctioned off, then I would say that the authorities need to be contacted.

The authorities? Which authorities? The bat policia?

The authorities being the FBI.

They are usually the ones that look into forgeries and what not when it comes to autographs and game used items.

I don't think it's too much of a stretch to say whomever doctored this bat was doing so knowingly and with intent.

Yes, I suppose this could be the tip of an iceberg...similar to Mastro Auctions being brought down

I sincerely doubt that MEARS is trying to do anything even remotely close to what Mastro Auctions was charged with. I don't have sufficient knowledge of bats to be in the know on this one, but every auction I offer thoughts to Troy, and he always has interest in any input I can give him. They make an error here and there, which is unfortunate, but no one in the hobby (MEARS, me, Taube or anyone else) is perfect. Still, if I was buying items, I'd trust MEARS and Taube, and if they made a rare error, I'd trust them to handle it in a proper and professional manner

I don't think Mears is the target here, the consignor is.
