I saw this ball on ebay and I started to laugh because it was so odd how is this ball in such great condition from 1944 and there is a random dirty spot with worn autographs on it. It really looks like it is colored in or something. Also what is James Spence thinking??? It doesn't matter to me that is a minor league ball, I just think it looks suspicious.

Anthony,

The ball in question does not appear to be "game used" to me, but old. I believe James Spence was only authenticating the autograph on the ball. It looks like the recipient of the autograph applied shellac or tape over it to preserve it but this has now turned brown. You can tell when balls have had shellac applied because they get discolored badly. No one ever applies this any more but was done commonly 50 years ago. I am by no means an expert on this, just contributing my thoughts.

Good Luck,
Steve

Steve agree with you 100% on this, James Spence didn't do anything wrong from what I can see and I would have to agree looks like the Autograph was taped or shellacked to try to preserve it.

It looks like the seller added to it the Game Used detail not Spence!!!
