Was considering buying 2-4 jays jerseys from the club & just wanted to get an opinion of what people think of their pricing.. For all of the lesser-known players, the price of a GW is $300 CND+Tax = $342 Cnd, (aprox $292.31 US).

Now, if that's what it is, then so be it.. However, it seems a bit much for players such as Brian Tallet, Josh Towers, Ryan Roberts, Jason Phillips, Chad Mottola, etc.. considering that several Jays jerseys from previous years went on ebay for under $200US and a game used Delgado went for $456 US recently... The Colorado Rockies jerseys I noticed a while back for similiar players was also quite a bit less when sold from the club.

I suppose if you buy in bulk they'll the per unit price will be less. Anyone know if it works that way? or have any thoughts...

hi sc,

relatively speaking, i think the jays' direct pricing is a little high compared to some other teams. (it's even worse when you get hit with a $70 US customs fee). some teams are cheaper, some are more expensive.

if you're going to compare the jays pricing though, then you've got to compare it to other team-direct jerseys. the delgado that you mentioned that recently sold on ebay for $456 was from esm. i'm going to bite my tongue on it, suffice it to say i feel it sold for $356 more than it should have. on the other hand, mike quick recently sold a nice 2002 delgado gamer with jays cert for $750. (Ebay Item number: 280064418054 ). quite a difference huh? while i think mike quick's price was about right, i was surprised that esm's delgado broke the $100 mark.

anyway, sure the jays pricing can be a little high but if you're a jays collector, then comparing it to other teams doesn't really. cheap rockies jerseys are only good to rockies collectors. if you don't collect rockies jerseys and only collect jays jerseys, then knowing that you can get a jeff cirillo gamer for $100 doesn't mean much.
i paid around $300 US for a 1990 manny lee. overpriced? of course. but where else am i going to get a 1990 legit manny lee gamer? in terms of collecting, it doesn't make much sense to say "well there's a $100 jody reed redsox gamer on ebay so i'll just get that instead of the manny lee". they jays had the only one so i paid their price. while i overpaid for it, i did it because i thought it was a great piece for my specific collection and if i wanted that specific piece, i had no other alternatives.

it's somewhat like the steiner situation. if you want a legit jeter gamer, then your only choice is to pay their $6000. it doesn't solve anything to realize that the reds are selling adam dunn gamers for $1000 or that you can pick up a jeter "gamer" off ebay without steiner certs for $400.

as you said, it is what it is. from my experience, there seem to be a handful of serious jays collectors out there. i remember a 1990 kelly gruber gamer that sold for over $600 on ebay once. was it overpriced? only if you look at it from a non-jays collector point of view. in the end, the buyer got a very nice piece that wasn't obtainable any other way.

Hey Rudy, thanks for the reply! I also noticed that 2002 delgado gamer & thought that the $750 was actually resonable. I'd imagine if sold through the team, it would be over $1000.

I agree with you on the Manny Lee, seems like a good aquisition. I guess if the price fits the purpose, then its worth it, that's the way I'm looking at things. A $70 US custom fee is crazy, I didn't think they charged any fees when shipping items to the US. I know when items are sent up to Canada, they usually tack on a fee on items valued at over $20.

I live in the area, if you ever one day need some items sent with another method of delivery, just send me an email..

Just a side note, as for Gruber jerseys, there was an interesting Orioles one up a couple months back, which I'm guessing was a GR or from spring training since he was released or retired prior to the season starting. Probably wouldn't mean much to anyone other than a Gruber fan, but it was decently priced at around $95 or so..

I too have noticed Jays gamers going for considerably less, and some being listed for less and having unsuccessful sales.

Rudy, I agree with you in as much as if it is a certain player that you collect (especially when jersey sets were more limited) then you shouldn't really consider the law of substitution. I too have overpaid on a specific player. I purchased a Cubs Jeff Kunkel jersey. I think I paid $300 which was $200 more than I had ever paid for any other Kunkel jersey. Why? Simply because it was the only one ever seen.

However, in the realm of 2005 or 2006 Jays jerseys, we have heard that there are upwards of 12-20 sets for the stars. This would certainly put many more into the market than would have been in 1990 or prior. Prices are starting to show it, in the secondary market. I think these auctions may not provie it, but at least support such an argument.

I noticed those jerseys as well, considering they are purchased for $300+ it's understandable that those intial auction prices would reflect that. Also noticed the Nixon & Izturis GR jerseys currently up there & at a decent price.

According to the '06 jays cataloge I have here, the home/road/alt black authentic jerseys are $199 CND, while the replica ones are $119. This kinda makes the GR jerseys they sell at $200 look like a decent deal perhaps..

Anyone know what the scene was back in 1999-2003 or so with Jays jerseys auctions on ebay? Was the pricing similiar as it is today? I only started casually observing about 2 years ago.

Rudy - would you happen to know if the Jays also sell gloves, bats, balls, pants, or other game used gear? or if they have some sort of database for those items?

(obviously) the jays can only sell what belongs to them. gloves and bats belong to players.

back in the early 90s, the jays used to sell bats. secretly almost. they didn't advertise it or mention it. however, they had this team store in commerce court. if you called up, you could ask to be placed on the "bat waiting list" for a certain player. they'd write down your contact info and the player you wanted and put you on the waiting list. when a player cracked their bat, it'd go to the first person on that specific player's waiting list. if you were way down on the list, you'd get excited every time you saw your player crack a bat on tv because it meant you just got bumped up a notch. anyway, i managed to get on the list for alomar and that was how i scored my alomar gamer. i remember when the jays got rickey henderson in '93. i called the shop the next day and there was already a list of 100 people for henderson. i didn't bother. i figured henderson was never going to crack over 100 bats in half a season. the amazing thing was that any bat from any player was the same price: $50. $50 for an alomar gamer, henderson gamer or rob ducey gamer.

i was told by the jays that they don't sell bats anymore or any other equipment other than jerseys. the only database they have is for jerseys.

i think they first started selling jerseys directly to the public around 2001. i completely missed the boat on that one and only realized it around late 2004. i never saw the jays auction anything off on ebay. i heard a rumor that when the jays first opened the vaults, they were letting clemens gamers go for $500 CDN. i have no idea how they determined their pricing then or now. it certainly seems to have caught up.

personally, i wonder what they did with the pants, caps, and batting helmets. the team changed it's logo in 1997. what happened to all those pre-1997 caps and batting helmets? they also sold tons of pre-1997 jerseys. what happened to all the pre-1997 pants? i'd love to get my hands on some 1989-1993 hats. god only knows where they all went.

i was told the equipment manager from the early 90s isn't there anymore.

there's practically no movement of any of the pre-1994 pieces in the hobby. it seems like everyone is keeping what they have.
