In celebration of the arrival of an actual Major League roster for my San Diego Padres, I decided to post photos of my jerseys. I'll post one a week and hope others do the same. Would like to see what's out there.

First, an extremely rare game USED Carlos Quentin 2014 Memorial Day jersey. He actually played in a game and went 1 for 4. Included evidence of him on the field in Arizona that day. I consider it the Patterson–Gimlin Bigfoot photo of Carlos. Think it's a photo match?

He was one of my favorite players after 08' wish he could have continued to improve on the 08' season. Nice looking jersey.

Carlos' knees won't let him on the field. Hopefully he gets back to the AL to DH.

Jerry,

It's tough to put a value on it due to it being game prepared. I do know that an executive with the Padres sold about a half dozen NIB La Primera Serie baseballs a few years back on eBay. If my memory serves me correctly they were selling anywhere from $75-$150.

It's a rare ball for sure but not impossible to find. It took me a few years but I eventually found one for my collection. However, I had to settle for one with an autograph on it. I believe it's the first baseball with multi-colored laces to be used in a official regular season game. If you ever wanted to sell it you wouldn't have any shortage of buyers and I think it would do well on eBay. I know I'd make a strong run at it!

Cheers,
Joe

P.s. If you care to share where you found this beauty at I'd love to hear.

Welcome to "The Show": Eric Show

R.C., that is a fantastic jersey!! One of my first childhood memories of baseball was Andre Dawson chasing Show around Wrigley after Show beaned him in the head. I have searched for the past few years for the right Show item to add to my collection and they are hard to come by. Thank you for sharing!

By the way, if anyone here hasn't seen the ESPN special "The Tortured Life of Eric Show" you are missing out! Below is a link to the commentary of the ESPN special, Show's life was certainly a very interesting one and you can't help but feel sorry for him.

Thanks Joe,

This jersey is one of my favorites.

I remember Dawson getting up after the beaning trying to chase Show down. That was a scary sight. Recalled Dawson saying Show was a Headhunter. Saw Eric most of his career. Thought he was the complete opposite of that claim.

Show was a very complex person. Probably too smart for his own good. Tragic end. Was able to briefly speak to him early in his carrier during spring training. Seemed to be a nice guy. . . .

One of my few Padre items....a Ken Caminiti hat from his MVP year of 1996. This thread made me go dig it out. I actually had wrote Ken in 1996 & he sent me this hat in August of 1996. When it came, boy did it smell bad!! My wife was like, "you're keeping that"!! So then, just a couple days ago, I found a getty from June of 1996 & it looks like a match...although the hat took a beating as I'm sure Ken wore it til probably August maybe when he sent it to me.

Unfortunately, Tommy John just had his Eponym Surgery so Randy Jones was a couple years too early for help with his injury. (Remember when Rotator Cuff tears were all the rage?)

During his previous two seasons though, he was THE hero of Padres fans.

My favorite purchase of 2014. A Yasmani Grandal with the Jerry Coleman & Tony Gwynn memorial patches and the ALS 75th Anniversary of Lou Gehrig's speech patch. The Gehrig patch is actually just glued on.

What I was told, all the ALS patches were removed from the Padres jerseys except for five. The ones which survived the stripping were the Grandal, Eric Stults, Chase Headley, Cameron Maybin and (if I remember correctly) Andrew Cashner.

Anyone else on here pick up one of the other four?

Hey Jay!
I know how much you love the brown . . . So here's one dedicated to the state of Texas. Former Padre and current Rangers Bullpen Coach Andy Hawkins. Dick Williams once called him the "Timid Texan". We know how Dick was so we won't get into that (or the No Hitter Loss). Has the distinction of being the only Padres pitcher to record a WIN in the World Series. I was at that game. Detroit was just too good.

Randy's been at Spring Training in Peoria the last couple of years as an instructor. Great guy.

Great, great jersey, R.C. I had Andy sign a ball for me about two years ago. The Rangers have autograph Wednesdays from 6:00 - 6:30, and they have a player and/or coach situated at a signing station down the left field line, behind home plate, and down the right field line in the concourse; you never know who will be there (it is not pre-posted). Just happened that the one game we went to had Andy signing, so we visited for a few minutes about the 1984 World Series and the Padres. He's a nice guy. Just imagine what could have happened had Bevacqua not stumbled between 2nd and 3rd in game one.... Just like the previous series against the Cubs, SD down 0-2 and had to win 3 straight at home (which they did). If they go to Detroit up 2-0 instead of 1-1, they would come back to San Diego having to win the last two.....

The three NLCS games in SD were wild. It was so loud at times you couldn't hear the PA!! I remember Ron Cey and Keith Moreland showing their backs as the Padres players were introduced for each of the three games. Classless Chumps.

Unfortunately, as luck would have it, the Padres played the toughest teams in the World Series from two decades. 1984 Detroit Tigers. 1998 New York Yankees. The '98 team had to be one of the all time best.

Even as a backup backstop, the wear on this jersey is tremendous. The material is almost worn through where the catcher's gear hooks up.

Back in the day, clubs always had a coach that was a mainstay. Seemed no matter who became manager, that coach would always be added to the staff. The Angels had Jimmie Reese. The Padres had Whitey Wietelmann.

He made his ML debut for the Boston Bees in 1939. After his career, Whitey coached the PCL Padres (with Jimmie Reese at one point) for many years. When the Padres entered the MLB in ’69, he became a coach for Preston Gomez.

Wietelmann was the original Padres #19, donning the digits his entire PCL and MLB coaching string until 1978. Gene Richards decided he wanted to switch from #29 to #19. Whitey graciously switched to #9. Once Gene found out that Whitey had worn that number for so many years, he switched to #17 the following year. In his final year of coaching Whitey was able to put on “19”.

A jack-of-all-trades, he stuck around for a few more years. Often seen driving his customized cart around fields in Yuma, Arizona and Jack Murphy Stadium doing what needed to be done. He was also famous for his chili served in the Padres clubhouse.

When Whitey Wietelman passed on March 26, 2002 at the age of 83, the Padres failed to honor him in anyway that I know of. That always stuck in my craw. So this was my tribute to Mr. Wietelmann.

Here’s a 1978 almost all original home. Thanks to Lon Lewis for the perfect restoration of the nameplate. Has chain-stitched “50” size as it had to be customized. It shows nice colors as apposed to the typical recycled 70’s shirts. On a YouTube clip of the 1978 All-Star Game, Whitey Wietelmann can be seen possibly wearing this jersey while catching the ceremonial first pitch delivered by Ray A. Kroc.

Here's a 2002 Steve Reed with the tan color appliqués. I believe the Padres only used this combination two years.

Since today's Padres Opening Day brought flashbacks of the feeble offense of 2014 and other lackluster years. . . .

Here's a one year style. 2011 Road Grey. I specifically purchased this jersey to represent the player trifecta of busts the Padres had signed that year: Orlando Hudson, Jason Bartlett and Brad Hawpe. Hawpe was the one I hated the least, probably because he spend more time on the DL than the other two.

Wish the Pads had stayed with the brown and yellow, which gave them a color scheme unique to MLB. Unless a timeless classic, I don't mind when teams update their uniforms but I think it's a shame when teams change their colors.

I believe this jersey originated from the Sotheby's Barry Halper Auction.

This style road was worn 1976-1977. Wilson manufacturer (1976 Homes = Sand Knit). NNOB. The tagging should read "35 76" on a strip tag located on the front tail. Of course anomalies could and probably do exist. Interesting . . .

This is common with Padres jersey. Prior to last season a large majority of game used jerseys were never authenticated and ended up only getting authentication when they were signed. Even jerseys that were only worn one time like a throwback didn't get authenticated because there was no one in the program that requested it.

Correct. Tony started using the tapered handle after picking up Garv's bat. So much trivia in dealing with a player's choice of weapon.

How many people remember the Oakland A's of the early 70's? The Free Agency draft after the 1976 season?

Well, San Diego signed, from that dynasty, a future Hall of Famer and the 1972 World Series MVP from the first major class of Free Agents. No such excuse of a small market team back then.

One of those players, "Steam Boat" (Boat for short), became one of my favorites at the time. Here's one of Gene Tenace's bats.

CASH ALERT: Looking for 1977 - 1980 Jersey's and 1976-1979 Game Used Bats of Gene Tenace.

One of my "Keepers". Brown orange with a little extra mustard 1980 Guillermo (Naranjo) Montanez. Included is a bat from the same season.

During the 1979 offseason, the Padres spared no expense and brought in top flight veteran players: Aurelio Rodriguez, Dave Cash and Willie Montanez . . . . Unfortunately, all were past their prime with only Cash lasting the entire season with the team.

Hey Jerry,
You're right. But in this case, this is Tony's "Frankenstein" glove. Unique with the re-sewn label and painstakingly using a marker to blacken the outside of the glove. I believe he also explained it was a mixture of marker and shoe polish.

Before todays Usher Gestapo, you could roam the stands and actually get to know the players. You could always strike up a conversation with a player one on one.

My Dad found out Paul Dade loved to smoke cigars. So, before the next game we went out and bought him a nice stogie and gave it to him. He loved it.

Here's a 1980 Paul Dade. A straight hem which fortunately didn't hit the year tag.

R.C.:
Great jersey! I agree with your assessment of the 1990 trade. One of the many Padres front office head scratchers over the years... including signing free agents past their prime (look at the history of the Texas Rangers to see the model for how not to do this....), gutting the team at various points, etc.

I like this style (1985-1990), but certainly not as much as the 1980-83 brown, gold, orange, or the brown/gold prior to that. One thing I did not like about this style is that the same design firm that designed the San Francisco Giants designed these, including the logo. The firm used the SF uniform template to do these, and created "type-based" logos instead of image based logos. Side note: this design, started in 1985, ended the unique interlocked "SD" style on the caps in which the D interlocked lower on the S.

More than likely these were used by the minor leaguers during spring training in the back fields of Yuma.

By the late 70's early 80's, the top Padres affiliates had their own uniforms. Possibility of Amarillo, Reno or Walla Walla though.
