I'm a big fan of the player-specific threads here on GUU and thought we should start one for my all-time favorite player, Adam Dunn. Feel free to post your Big Donkey game used items, photo matches and new pick-ups!

I'll start this off with some new photo matches I've been working on for my Dunn rookie season bat. The 3 referenced game photos all come from the October 4, 2001 game against Kerry Wood and the Cubs at Wrigley Field. This was the 4th to last game of Dunn's rookie season and the last away game he played as a rookie. Adam hit his 19th and final home run of the year the previous day.

Here's a Carolina Clubs Pro Model Adam Dunn bat. I've yet to see another one of his CC bats or a picture of Dunn using one in batting practice, spring training or a game. Despite multiple attempts to contact Carolina Clubs, I've been unable to locate any of Dunn's bat order records. I believe the American Flag decals were placed on CC bats sometime after the 9/11 attacks which would likely date this bat to the 2002 season. Former Reds player Sean Casey appeared to use nothing but CC bats in Getty images from 2001 and 2002 and the American flag decal only started appearing on his bats in 2002 game photos (as early as 2/28/02). If anyone has any insight or information on this bat I'd love to hear it.

Here are two Adam Dunn locker number plates from games played in Kansas City. The #32 plate is from his 2011 season with the White Sox and the #10 plate is from the 2014 AL Wild Card game between the A's and Royals.

Here is Adam Dunn's batting helmet from his 25-game run with the Oakland Athletics. It is MLB authenticated to the Wild Card Playoff game against the Royals (hence the "Postseason 14" sticker on back) but I believe I can photo match it to every regular season game he played with Oakland. Dunn was wearing this helmet while recording his final career H, 2B, HR, R, RBI, BB, HBP and SO.

Photo matches for the A's batting helmet:

-On top is a photo of Dunn celebrating after hitting a 2-run home run in his first at bat with the A's on 9/1/14. The top red circle highlights a small circle of yellow paint that made its way down from the helmet's bill during the painting process. The lower red circle highlights a strand of thread/glue on the ear padding.

-The 2nd match is from Dunn hitting his final career double (#334) and RBI's (#1167 and #1168) against the Rangers on 9/26/14. There are numerous small white scratches/transfer marks that match as well as the pine tar on the bill of the helmet.

Thanks! I'd love to someday track down a Dunn D-Backs helmet. In 2008, he only played in 44 games with Arizona (a fitting number) and I'm not sure if they ever wore different helmets for home and away games or if they had a special throwback style helmet.

He used Carolina Clubs during his time with the Louisville Bats.... he must have ordered AT LEAST 3 dozen of these bats.... when he left to go to Cincinnati everyone on the team was using an Adam Dunn bat....

Thanks for the information. The only pictures I've seen of Dunn batting while with the Louisville RiverBats show him using Louisville Slugger bats. Do you recall if any of his Carolina Clubs bats had the American flag decal like on my bat? Dunn left the RiverBats to play for the Reds less than two months before the 9/11 attacks which leads me to believe my bat was not made or used during Dunn's minor league career. Of course, this assumption only holds if these American flag decals were only added for a short time after 9/11/01. For what it's worth, I just went through Getty images of some other players known to use Carolina Clubs bats in the late 90's/early 00's and did not see any CC bats with the American flag decal before 9/11/01.

Next is an autographed black Louisville Slugger I13 model bat from Dunn's 2002 All-Star season. I believe the bat is photo matched to a 2003 baseball card featuring a 2002 game photo (photo match pictures to follow).

Juan Gris
11-24-2014, 07:23 PM
The card used for the photo match is a 2003 Upper Deck MVP Sports Nut #SN1 (note that the game photo is from a 2002 game). There are two distinctive ball transfer marks on the underside of the barrel that match up in size and placement relative to the silver LVS center brand and the silver "CINCINNATI REDS" label on the barrel. Also, the pine tar application under the center brand extends to the same area on the card image. It's not the strongest photo match in the world (I had a hard time taking a picture of my bat with minimal glare/reflection) but I feel the evidence adds up.

Here is a Louisville Slugger Y30 model bat from Dunn's 2002 All-Star season. Earlier this year I documented photo matches of this bat to a baseball card (see: http://www.gameuseduniverse.com/vb_forum/showpost.php?p=361400&postcount=1239) and to being used during a road game against the Giants on May 3 or 4 in 2002 (see: http://www.gameuseduniverse.com/vb_forum/showthread.php?t=61960&highlight=personally+significant). I'll post both photo matches shortly.

Here is Adam Dunn's 421 thru 424th HR bat and 16th - 18th of the 2013 season. He used this bat for 2 Hr's on June 10th, one on June 11th and one more on June 15th before breaking it 3 days later. He also knocked in 8RBI's during this period. I am 2-2 on matching Hr's when someone from the sox clubhouse leaves a post it on the bat. Def wasn't expecting this.

It was announced today that it is official - Dunn retires.

The White Sox years really hurt his numbers. Being this close to 500 and walking baffles me. He may have reached that time when he knows he can't do it anymore.

Gotta take his bat down from the 500 HR wall I have...sad

I have found when you find one of these blonde ones with this much use there are 1 if not more. Watching video he must use these bats against certain types of pitchers because I have seen him go all game with a black bat then in the 9th he shows up with one of these hammered blonde bats.

I had concerns with how this bat was being attributed to Dunn's 1998 Billings Mustangs period from the day it was listed. Yesterday, after hearing back from Goldin Auction staff and John Taube, the PSA LOA and listing have been corrected to show the bat was ordered by Dunn in 2001 while with the Louisville River Bats.

Awesome throwback! What makes it even more unique is it was the last White Sox uniform Dunn wore as he was traded to Oakland the following morning.

I couldn't find a complete list of the 2014 dates they wore the 1983 throwbacks but Getty has images of Dunn wearing this style on:

April 12
April 30
May 24
May 25
July 18
August 17

I think you might have a shot at matching the stains on the front upper part of Dunn's jersey (above the "S" in "SOX") on August 17 (Getty image 453745854).

While many people do not like the 83's for their "softball or beer league" vibe - I always liked them because they are different. People get tired of the same look in uni's.

A friend of mine debates on the boringness of the Tigers Home jerseys and the fact they don't change. There; I think it shows legacy to stay the same. Tigers, Yankees, Cards, Dodgers Homes do not change and change isn't always good. The Tigers Roads have changed thru the years and I think today's style is boring and stale. Wish they returned to the 80's look and leave it alone.

That's so cool to see he used a Dunn bat! I was hoping Ferrell would wear one of Dunn's old uniform numbers (44, 32, 10) but understand he wore #19 in honor of Bert Campaneris. At least Ferrell got to play for 4 of the 5 teams Dunn played for in his career (Reds, Diamondbacks, White Sox and A's).

Yes, 2005. I have a Dunn GU helmet, the pictured hat and batting gloves and a Reds bat. After he announced his retirement I decided to move everything but the jersey and bat. The others are sold pending final payment from buyer. I was quite surprised and disappointed he didn't want to make the short run to 500 HR. He could have easily made it; especially at home in Houston.

Here is the black 2001 Louisville Slugger I13 model bat I picked up in the last Goldin Auction (and which was previously mentioned in this thread). It was originally attributed to Dunn's time with the Billings Mustangs in 1998 due to the barrel branding. After referencing Dunn's LVS bat order records and conferring with John Taube, it was determined to be 1 of the 3 bats ordered on 6/12/01 while Dunn was with the Louisville RiverBats. Regarding this bat, John Taube quoted Brian Hillerich as saying:

...As for the MLB/TPX logo, it might be one of the times we forgot to put it on a bat, that happened quite a bit back in the early 2000's since we did not have a "Pro" branding area. Retail and Pro went to the same area so the attention to detail was sometimes forgotten...

According to Goldin Auctions:

This bat does not have "Cincinnati Reds" branded under Dunn's name indicating that the bat was ordered by Dunn as a minor leaguer. There were two orders for Maple I13 models made by Dunn during his 2001 rookie season, one while a member of the Louisville RiverBats, and the second after Dunn was called up to the big leagues with the Reds. With no team name on the barrel, this specific bat can be placed to his order with the RiverBats.

I was pleased with how Goldin Auctions and John Taube worked with me to figure out the back-story on this bat before the auction ended. While playing with the Reds from 2001-2008, Dunn ordered nearly 300 bats with a black finish from Louisville Slugger. This is one of the first 3 black bats Dunn ever ordered and, depending on what happened to the other 2, may be the earliest surviving black Louisville Slugger Dunn bat.

Looks like it sold for $540. Not too shabby for a bat Dunn may have given to Jose Abreu and then Abreu gave to Ferrell to use in a single at bat due to their likeness. Hopefully the buyer can get it signed by Ferrell and/or Dunn.

Here is the batting helmet Adam Dunn wore during the 2nd half of his 2012 All-Star and TSN American League Comeback Player of the Year season. In Getty images from the White Sox vs. Twins game on June 26, 2012, Dunn is seen wearing an old style Rawlings helmet in the 7th inning and a CoolFlo style helmet in the 8th inning (he had worn the old style in 2012 up to this point). My guess is he cracked the old style helmet after striking out in the 7th and had to find a replacement for his next at-bat in the 8th. An impromptu in-game helmet change may explain why the number stickers on the back of this CoolFlo helmet are slightly crooked (the “2” is visibly higher than the “3”). Whatever the case may be, Dunn wore this signed helmet for the last 3 months of the 2012 season, including his 400th career home run game on August 18!

Other major identifying marks on the helmet include:
-The tar buildup on the brim;
-A portion of the white circle sticker on top of the helmet gradually gets rubbed off as the season progresses (as seen over dozens of game photos);
-A light colored streak in the plastic on the back top between air vents (this streak can even be seen inside of the helmet and was likely created during the manufacturing process);
-Light scratches/transfer marks near the right ear hole.
-Three quarters of the ear pad lining were rubbed and torn off from use. The flap of remaining lining can be seen curled up next to Dunn’s face in many head-on pictures.

Here is a 2002 Louisville Slugger I13M model bat I just acquired. Dunn ordered just 12 of these I13M bats (6 on 8/27/02 and 6 on 8/30/02) and this is the first example I've seen. He ordered 233 total I13 model bats and 104 total I13L model bats during his Reds career. This bat is noticeably smaller when held next to the other I13 Dunn bats in my collection (0.5 inches shorter and the circumference at the thickest part of the barrel is 0.5 inches less). I'm not sure what the "M" in "I13M" stands for but have a hunch it may be an experimental maple variety of the I13 model. I searched these forums and Google for more information on the I13M model and found very little information besides a 2002 Pujols I13M model bat that sold through Goldin Auctions in 2013. If anyone (especially BMH) could fill me in on the background of this bat model I would be very interested to hear!

Here’s an interesting 2013 “Dunner Custom Cut – A” Marucci bat that's a microcosm of Dunn’s “Three True Outcomes” career. The bat looks to have been used a good deal in Spring Training before making exactly 4 plate appearances in the regular season. Making its regular season debut on Opening Day (April 1, 2013), Dunn used this bat while striking out in the 8th Inning. During the 2nd game of the season (April 3, 2013), Dunn used this bat to hit a Homerun, draw a walk and hit a bat-breaking single. While waiting for the 2nd pitch during Dunn’s 6th inning at bat on April 3, the FSKC TV announcer said the following:

All Adam Dunn has to do today is strikeout and that will sum up his offensive game and his career. He already has the home run and the walk. A lot of home runs, a lot of walks, a lot of strikeouts, he doesn’t hit many singles. He breaks his bat and drops one in front of Jeff Francoeur and Dunn is 2 for 2 today.

Here's a black I13 Louisville Slugger inscribed to Dunn's 24th home run of the 2002 season (43rd career) in Colorado against Kent Mercker on August 8. It can be directly traced to an order for 6 black I13 model bats on 7/24/01 (4 days after Dunn's MLB debut) because of: (1) the block-letter nameplate (autograph LVS bats were first ordered by Dunn on 4/15/02) and (2) "CINCINNATI REDS" appearing underneath the name (see my previous post in this thread concerning black block-type Dunn bats). According to order records (and BMH), there could only be 6 black LVS Dunn bats to have both block-type and the team name.

Back on 3/6/15, I posted photos of my 2013 Adam Dunn MM38-A Marucci bat (see post #41 (http://www.gameuseduniverse.com/vb_forum/showpost.php?p=375569&postcount=41) in this thread). At that time, I'd only located a photo match to Dunn’s 425th career home run hit in Minnesota on June 20, 2013. Now that I’ve had time to look for MLB TV photo matches, I’m able to present the complete lifespan of this bat. The knob is stamped 6/10/13 and I was able to confirm the bat broke while hitting a single on 6/28/13.

Through 28 plate appearances over 8 games, Dunn put up a .429 Batting Average with this bat, including:

i was just reading another forum the other day and some of the members were bashing a member for being too lazy to do a google search to answer his own question rather than posting on the board and expecting others to do his work.

Then I opened this thread and read your post. I am absolutely blown away by the amount of work some collectors do to add provenance to their collections.

Seriously, great job.

Thank you for the kind words! It took longer to put together than I'd like to admit but once I had the general idea I decided to see it through (albeit broken up over several months of free time).

I know just what you mean about people inquiring about their own game used items. Sometimes it's laziness and other times they just don't know how to access and use available sources. This forum and its members have been a wealth of info to me over the years and I try to help when I can. If anyone needs help with something feel free to email me at the address in my signature.

On August 5, 2014, the White Sox were down 15-0 to the Rangers at U.S. Cellular Field when Adam Dunn made his Major League pitching debut. Pitching the top of the 9th Inning, Dunn gave up 1 walk, 2 hits and 1 run (9.00 ERA). This is the lineup card from that game and you'll note the change moving Dunn from "DH" to "1". A big thank you to helf35 for hunting this down for me at Soxfest!

Here's a beautiful Louisville Slugger B345 model bat with a long tape job on the handle and a number of photo matches. There's a circle-style MLB Authentication sticker indicating the bat was broken on May 26, 2006 in Cincinnati against the Diamondbacks (Dunn had 3 hits that day). Years ago I posted about this bat asking for help locating more photo matches, in particular to those of him hitting a home run (http://www.gameuseduniverse.com/vb_forum/showthread.php?t=61291). Dunn hit 6 home runs during the time frame I can verify he was actively using this bat and I hope to someday establish more matches.

Here is a 2003 to 2004 Louisville Slugger I13L model bat with a good deal of use, pine tar and a nicely repaired handle crack. Dunn only ordered this color of model in 2003 and 2004 which makes sense as the bat finish exhibits some of the cracking known to occur with the UV polyurethane finish LVS experimented with from 2000-2004. You can read more about that whole mess here: http://www.gameuseduniverse.com/vb_forum/showthread.php?t=13820&referrerid=9289

I'm not sure if you were asking me or everyone for those items but this is not an Items Wanted thread. Dunn never even had a postseason at-bat...

Some more lineup cards to share:

On top:
-July 23, 2001, Reds at Braves, Reds won 5-4.
-Adam Dunn's 4th career game, going 2 for 4 off starting pitcher Tom Glavine, including a leadoff single to start a 5-run 8th inning for the Reds.
-Blue carbon copy filled out/signed by Reds Manager Bob Boone, given to Braves. White Braves batting order, presumably filled out by Bobby Cox.

On bottom:
-September 24, 2012, Indians at White Sox, Chicago won 5-4.
-Dunn had 4 RBI off 2 home runs (#40 and #41 on season).
-From an interview after the game: "The last homer, that probably was the most important so far in my career," Dunn said. "That was a win we needed."

From the Cincinnati Reds:

Congratulations to Adam Dunn on being named the next inductee into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame!

Dunn (2001-08) was the top vote-getter selected by fans, Reds alumni and select members of the media through the Modern Player Ballot.

Here is the Nike Diamond Pro Dri-FIT fielding glove used by Adam Dunn during his 2001 rookie season. Dunn signed and inscribed this with "1st Glove" and an accompanying signed LOA details this as being his "1st major league game used glove". There aren't a ton of pictures available from his 2001 rookie year but I was able to find style/photo matches for this glove from:

-2001 Louisville RiverBats minor league game.
-2001 All-star Futures Game (played July 1, 2001 at Safeco Field in Seattle).
-Reds vs. Cubs at Cinergy Field on September 18, 2001 (the first Reds game played after 9/11/01).

This glove shows excellent use which you can see in person should you visit the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame Museum this year. :)
