Just received this jersey from Goldin Auctions. Need some help on it.

It is tagged White 1983, but at some point had a black armband on it, as there is an outline of where it was.

As far as I know, an armband was worn in 1981, but none in 1982 or 1983.
Also, number 6 was last used by White (or any player) in 1979 and then 1983 on.

So, any ideas as to when the jersey could date from? Was it produced in or around 1981, armband added and not issued until 1983? Did the Yankees of that era use/re-use jerseys from prior seasons?

No mention of a removed armband.

I believe the Yankees wore a death band in 1986 in memory of Roger Maris and White was a coach in 1986.

I would say your jersey was reused beyond 1986.

No mention of a removed armband.

These are the factors beside Jersey Size

1) Date of Wilson Tag
Wilson Tag 1978-1985

2) Armbands
1979 -- Black armband on left sleeve to honor teammate Thurman Munson (H/R) - D 8/2/79
1980 -- Black armband on left sleeve to honor teammate Thurman Munson (H/R)

3) Player using "6"
Brad Gulden (1980)
Roy White (1969-1979)

Questions that need to be answered:
1) What size jersey does Gulden wear?
2) Any remnants of a number change?

Roy White
Height: 5' 10", Weight: 160 lb
Brad Gulden
Height: 5' 10", Weight: 175 lb.

I notice White and Gulden are the same size and likely wear the same size jersey.

So my conclusion is possibly use

1) Used by White in 1979, grey strip tag was stripped and replaced in 1980 and 1983
OR
2) Used by Gulden in 1980, grey strip tag was stripped and replace in 1983

Brain fart! I missed the armband outline (sorry). The jersey was issued in 1983 (not 1979, 80, or 81), and, while the band could have been from 1986 for Roger Maris, it was more likely from 1985 for equipment manager Pete Sheehy. Sheehy died 8/14/85.

Thanks to all that responded.

Dave, so the jersey was re-used from 1983 through 1986? Was this common for the Yankees?

The number on the back is ever so slightly newer than the "New York." Any explanation for this?

Thanks,

Ash.

Dave,

So grey strip tags are never stripped? So the first person who could have possibly used it is White. This is good to know.

1986 -- Black armband on left sleeve to honor former player Roger Maris (H/R) - D 12/14/85

If 1983 is the starting point, I have to agree on this assessment since the band is removed. Mike Pagliarulo wouldn't fit in that jersey in 1985.

Do we know what years White was a coach past 1986?

As mentioned in my last post, the jersey could have been last used in 1985, as Pete Sheehy, team clubhouse guy, died 8/14/85, and armbands were worn for the rest of the season. The stitching between the 6 and the NEW YORK looked to match up, so the minor difference in wear is not a concern to me.

joelsabi:

I have seen Yankee gamers of the 1970s and 80s with collar strip tags removed (both partially and fully) but never one replacing a previous strip tag.

Also, 3lads, the Yankees often reused jerseys for 1 or 2 seasons for the personnel that were with the team multiple years, and possibly for multiple players, though the latter is tougher to determine without a definitive band or patch imprint or presence.
