ok armchair historians, here's your chance to knock my socks off.

in 1992, MLB sent a team of major league players to Japan on an "all star tour" to play a few exhibition games. i believe this occured in october or november.

can someone please:

- tell me the exact dates this tour occured
- tell me how many games were played
- tell me the MLB roster
- tell me any boxscores
- show any photos of the games

thanks,

rudy.

I'm up for the challenge...

Here are my early findings from an article quoted in a thread in addictsports.com. It's talking about the 1990 series where Japan opened with four wins.

"Coming at the height of the U.S.- Japan trade tensions, the loss took on strong symbolic meaning. Articles in Newsweek, U.S. News and World Report and other major publications reported the loss and questioned America's future. Looking for revenge, the Major Leagues sent a stronger team in 1992 that included Roger Clemens, Wade Boggs, Ozzie Smith, and Ken Griffey Jr. The team cruised to a 6-1-1 record."

That article came from mlb.com here

Later in the thread is this info

1992 -- MLB 6-1-1; MLB MVP: Mark Grace
GAME SITE RESULTS
1 Tokyo MLB 11, Yomiuri Giants 0 (exhib.)
2 Tokyo MLB 9, Japan 4
3 Seibu MLB 3, Japan 1

5 Koshien MLB 0, Japan 0 (tie)
6 Haiwadai MLB 10, Japan 2
7 Tokyo MLB 9, Japan 5

Ok, I realize this is very little help, but on a site called liveauctioneers.com, 6 items from the series are listed. Unfortunately they are not in the archives anymore, but it shows Darren Daulton was also on the team and shows you what the program from the series looks like in case you can track that down.

http://www.liveauctioneers.com/search?q=%2B1992+%2Bmlb+%2Bjapan

I was able to get links to the items which are here

As you can see, some of the other names on the signed program include
Daulton, Boggs, O. Smith, Karros, Kelly, Daulton, Griffey Jr., Hollins, Tewksbury, Sierra, Langston, & Swindell

EAC Gallery was selling a bunch of Darren Daulton items (which included pieces from this series) until they were pulled.

From the New York Times archives- the abstracts are free, but the articles you have to pay for, it looks like the games were played on or around November 9, 1992
There's an AP story which mentions Ken Griffey Junior stars in Japan.

According to various newspaper accounts I accessed, the dates of the games were Oct.30, 31st, Nov.1, 3, 4, 5, 7, and 8th.
Hope that helps,
Guy

thanks very much to all! this is great stuff.

the japan tour daulton jersey is a home jersey. would it be safe to assume then that the American League players on the tour wore their road jerseys?

thanks again,

rudy.

If I remember correctly, there were many discrepancies between what Daulton was claiming some of his pieces were (like a world series chest protector and shin guards) and the actual ones used.

I think we have to find photos of the game somehow to see what the team actually wore.
