Forum readers-

Please reference the "1989 McGwire road jersey" in the current Grey Flannel auction (photo below).

I have also included a shot of McGwire chatting with Will Clark in the 1989 World Series.

I have 2 questions:

1. The Grey Flannel jersey has the small C on the McGwire nameplate on the lower area between the M and the G. The World Series photo (and every photo I have from 1989) has the C positioned in the "higer" area. Does anyone either have a 1989 McGwire jersey with the same type of plate as the Grey Flannel with a team LOA or are there additional photos that show this type of nameplate was worn by McGwire in 1989?

2. Does anyone have a 1989 Oakland road jersey that is game worn and does not have the World Series patch/band? It is my understanding that the regular season jerseys were worn into the series.

Any help is appreciated.

hello howard,

i don't know enough about the placement of the "c" to be able to definitively state that it can be used to date mcgwire jerseys. i do recall once seeing 2 images of mcgwire from 1994 (both images showed the 125 patch) and one image had the high C and the other had the low C. here:

http://img144.imageshack.us/img144/2866/macyy1.jpg

obviously, we can't be sure if the image on top really is from 1990. however if it is, it's another example of the C being placed in 2 different positions within the same year.

regarding your second question, i have in my photo library a number of 1989 and 1990 oakland gamers with no world series patch. i share your understanding that oakland's regular season gamers were used in the world series. however, players likely wore more than 1 road jersey during the regular season. if a player wore 2 road jerseys during the regular season, then would both road jerseys be carried into the world series?
personally, my experience has led me to believe that typically, only half of the regular season gamers would be carried into the world series. i've seen blue jays gamers from 92 and 93 where multiple sets were used during the regular season yet only 1 set was further carried into the world series.
the gfc mcgwire is a set 1. is it possible he wore set 2 in the second half of the regular season and carried his set 2 into the world series?

rudy.

Rudy-
Thanks for the post.

I remember seeing the photos you posted from an earlier thread.

What I want to see is rock solid photographic evidence of a 1989 McGwire home jersey with the placement of the small C positioned like the jersey being offerd by Grey Flannel. Between you and several other tallented Forum readers, one of you must be able to find such a photo........if a photo does indeed exist!

The challenge is on the table.

I'm a buyer if someone can convince me that he wore this type of jersey in 1989.

Any help is appreciated.

Howard,
I have a tape of games 3 and 4 of the 1989 World Series. The c is high on the jersey in both games.Dave McKay was the 1st base coach and the c on his jersey is positioned the same as the c on the McGwire jersey.I hope this helps.

Fred-
Thanks for the great information.

Can someone now produce a photo of McGwire wearing a jersey with the C positioned the same as the Grey Flannel jersey? I have searched through my photos and several sites on the internet, however, can't locate a single photo.

Again, I'd love to buy this jersey, and will bid once I see photographic proof.

Thanks again, Fred.

Howard,
I found tape from the following games;1988 World Series game 1,1989 ALCS game 5 and 1990 ALCS game 2.The McGwire jerseys in theses games also had the high c.In addition I checked previous auctions of American Memorabilia and Lelands. There was a McGwire 1990 and 1995 home jersey on each site from a previous auction. Both jerseys had the high c.I also have a 1989 ALCS program. They had a 1989 year in review section. There is a picture of McGwire at bat and the jersey also has the high c.

Fred-
Thanks again for the info.

Although I too have photos of the C in the "High" position, I want to see a photo of it in the "low" position, the same way as placed on the jersey currently inthe Grey Flannel auction.

As noted, I'd love to have this 1989 shirt, however, I can't locate a single photo, video or baseball card ANYWHERE of McGwire wearing a jersey manufactured like the one in the Grey Flannel auction.

Any help is appreciated.

Maybe this is obvious, but at what point did they start wearing the arm band as seen below?

I recognize the GFC jersey is a set 1, so it might not have a black band if they didn't have one all season.

Anyway, here's what McGwire's jersey looked like in the world series. The ol' high c

the black armband was worn only in the 1989 world series. worn for giamatti who passed away on sept 1, 1989.

I know this doesn't help, but here's a pic from a negative taken in 1988 on ebay

Thanks for the photo-we are getting closer!

With this said, can someone now provide a shot of McGwire from 1989 that matches the Grey Flannel jersey?

Again, thanks to all.

eric,

contrary to what the ebay auction states, i don't believe that pic is from 1988. i believe it's from 1992 specifically. there's a diamond-shaped patch on the right sleeve that looks similar to the "25 yr" patch that the A's wore on the right sleeve in 1992. from 1987-1991, the A's wore no patch on their right sleeves. (except for the world series). the only patch they wore was the elephant-on-ball patch which was always worn on the left sleeve. additionally, there's a mark underneath the patch that i suspect is the russell "r" logo. russell began supplying the a's in 1992. prior to 1992, they were supplied by rawlings. that mark doesn't look like the rawlings logo to me. below is a photo of mcgwire dated from 1992.

it may be easier to date mcgwire photos by the growth stages of his mullet.

As always, simply amazing photo enhancing capabilities and keen knowledge of jerseys.

Any chance you can dig deeper and find the photo I'm seeking of MAC wearing the Grey Flannel jersey?

Thanks.

Forum readers-
I have spoken to several collectors over the last few days, and no one has been able to locate a photo that matches the Grey Flannel McGwire.

Again, I would enjoy owning this particular jersey, however, am not comfortable in the fact that a photo can't be located that matches this type of C being worn in 1989.

Does anyone have a photo, card, video or program showing MAC wearing this in 1989?

Any help is appreciated.
