I consigned to MASTRO a 1982 Cardinals home jersey #37 of Keith Hernandez Set #1 1982 Tag and auction item #1362 of their Classic Collector Auction which ended October 26th. I picked this up at a swap meet near my home for $10 and it cost me more to insure and ship to MASTRO than what I paid for it! In fact, it is funny I tried to haggle the seller down on his price, but he stayed firm on $10 saying "no, it is a collectors piece". Anyway I thought that the jesey would bring in the $500-$750 range. The jersey sold for $1987.00. A great investment on my part! Anyway, is this just two KH or Cardinals fans inflating the price or did I underestimate what I thought the jersey would sell for? Thanks.

What kind of swap meet do you go to that has game used jerseys?

Guess what,-even I will have to admit that what used to pass for normal isn't the norm anymore.You probably underestimated your jersey. If Steiner- Mets can ask for and probably get $2,000+ for a Pedro Martinez playoff jersey that was worn on the bench and never used "In Play" then a Keith Hernandez jersey, of a potential HOFer used all season long, at the height of his career is probably worth more than the Martinez. So the swap meet guy got robbed and you sold just under what it's worth. A great find by the way. http://pro.corbis.com/images/42-17429695.jpg?size=67&uid={1d6a89ae-cb9b-4881-8e72-dbef56f44a9a} http://pro.corbis.com/images/U1974858.jpg?size=67&uid={648116fb-9f71-4d7a-aeb6-3822eb2cc7db}

The guy at the swap meet buys unclaimed storage units and then just throws out the stuff and sells whatever he finds. Trust me I visited his space the next few weeks to see if he had anything else but he did not

Wow, good for you! Of course, just in case "staindsox" isn't paying attention, I'll ask:

What would Thoreau do?

Perhaps you should take that $1900, keep your ten bucks minus shipping charges, and have good karma!

(Of course, I'd be buying me some more GU stuff!)

In our previous discussion on ethics, I think staindsox was extreme, but what richpick did was just terrible. Finding a KNOWN (to you) treasure for 10 bucks and trying to get the price down. Just take it and run with it. Trying to get the price down is CROSSING THE LINE. It's not funny, it's not a good business move, it's not being smart, it's stealing from a baby.

Also, it's like price gouging, isn't it? In price gouging, you know the buyer is desperate to have that item, so you try to get as much as possible, WITHOUT concern for fairness. In this case, you know that the seller knows nothing about the jersey, so you try and get the price as low as possible, WITHOUT concern for fairness.

Yes, I admit that trying to talk him down on price was a bit cheeky but no one is considering the fact that when someone notices a bargain it is their due dilligence and years of loving and studying the hobby that pays off for them. I will probably never see a deal like this again and in the world of swap meets, flea markets, antique shows, that is what you do try and talk down the price.

WHAT? You tried to talk down the $10.00 price. Take the bargain and run.
