View Full Version : Thoughts on this Luis Tiant Red Sox cap?

I recently picked up this Luis Tiant cap from eBay. It was being sold as a an autographed cap and nothing else. I had to email the seller to ask for a brand and size. He said it was Roman Pro, although it looked to me more like a KM Pro cap to me based on the shape.

The cap arrived today. I turned it over to look at the inside and the cap is in used condition, with number 23 written on the underside. No size tag but fits like a 7 3/8 or 7 1/2. Could this cap actually be game used? I emailed the seller and I am awaiting a response.

The cap is a Roman Pro cap but is made exactly like a KM Pro, right down to the zig-zag patterned buckram. KM Pro shut down after the 1976 season, and the machinery was sold to Roman, Devon, and New Era. Roman Pro caps were different than KM Pro caps except for the shape of the crown until the mid 80s. This must be from right after KM shut down, which would date the cap to the 1977 season if Roman Pro was using leftover KM Pro material (which was most likely the case). I have seen similar caps before so I know the cap itself isn't phony.

Does anyone have any Red Sox caps from this era? Anyone have any opinions? Anything helps.
