How do you authenticate shoes?

Two pairs of Puckett shows at auction within a month got me wondering how do you authenticate shoes? I would think that this item would be by far the hardest to authenticate being that anyone can buy the same shoes from any sporting goods stores. If Lou had contact info I would love to ask him. I would like to own a pair but can't pull the trigger because the comfort level isn't there.
