Just got a 1984 Padres jersey, of Mike Couchee #49. Tagged 49 84 on the lower front.

I know he play a handful of games for SD in 1983, and this was either a Spring Training jersey or simply made up for him, as he didn't play in MLB in 1984. Could be issued or worn, not sure. Also tagged with a Wilson size 42 tag in neck, along with a small "tapered" tag below it.

However, it also does not have the RAK initials on the sleeve. Did every Padres jersey have them in 84? Can anyone confirm he did play for SD in Spring Training in 84? I looked a bit and didn't find anything conclusive. I just like getting my facts straight.

Thanks in advance. (front & back pics will be posted in pickups thread)

FWIW, he is listed in the Padres roster in the 1984 Street & Smith magazine, so I suspect this was most likely used in Spring Training...I'm not not sure (I know a Padres expert could help) if the Padres used the RAK memorial once the regular season started or if they used them in ST as well........

There is/was a Padres expert on here at one time. I asked him about my 84 Padres jersey. I remember him saying that the pullover style like mine was only used in spring training in 84. Seems like he also said the RAK wasn't used during ST. Curious yours doesn't have the RAK. Neat jersey though.

My jersey is a button down, which I thought was correct for 1984?

Yeah that's what he said. The regular season jerseys were button downs in 84.

Yet, it seems mine is a Spring Training jersey? Maybe?

I appreciate the info... hopefully some others can shed some light too.

What you more than likely have is a jersey made for Couchee for the 1984 season. Since he did not pitch during that season, if it was worn, it would have been worn during Spring Training 1985. The Padres wore previous years and/or recycled jerseys during Cactus League play. An example of a recycle would be this Tim Stoddard below which is also #49. Tim played for the Cubs in ’84 and “85 for the Padres.

That being said, with #49 being issued to Stoddard, it would lead me to believe Couchee wore a different # or wasn’t with San Diego during Spring Training ’85.

I have only seen two non button down jersey tagged “84”. Champ Summers and the one on this post. It’s an anomaly I cannot explain nor can I explain the absence of the “RAK” on the Couchee other than the fact they never got around to applying them. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help, RC.... Do you know if it's true what was said... that the Padres wore pullovers in Spring Training of 1984? Or if the RAK was on the Spring Training jerseys in 1984?

Even more disturbing is the Q&A on this item...

I cannot stand when a prospective buyer of game used jerseys asks for the "armpit to armpit" measurements. You know he's only buying the jersey with one thing in mind....

Recycled pullovers were worn during the spring without the RAK on the sleeves during Spring Training '84.

The buttondown jerseys with the RAK were used during the regular season.

Thank you. Very odd, but either way, I'm happy to finally have the style.

I've got the 84 Stoddard jersey, had it for about 15 years, how many did they make per season? This one and the one I've got, the brown, tagged the same, makes 2. No set flag on mine, either. I love mine and it brings stares when I wear it.

Wilson didn't flag tag in that era, except for notations of tapering and/or extra length. A normal Padres jersey of the era would have the uniform number and year strip tagged in the tail, and the Wilson tag in the collar.
