According the the MLB CBA under Section VII HEALTH AND SAFETY SECTION D

"d. By 2013, all Major League players will wear a new batting helmet developed by Rawlings that protects against pitches thrown at 100 miles per hour. The new version of the helmet is significantly less “bulky” than prior versions of the more protective helmet."

-----------------

This yields the qurestion to us game used collectors. Does this mean large amounts of game used helmets hitting (no pun intended) the market this off season to dump the old and bring in the new for some teams?

Also, does this mean the YANKEES will finally change their helmets? Will be weird seeing a guy like Jeter wearing the helmet.

I know the Rays have all players wear cool flow helmets. But other teams give guys a choice. But mostly the majority of players right now do not use the new concussion helmets.

I hope if mlb teams dump their old items, they should PLEASE leave the helmet stickers on this offseason then. There is no point in removing helmet stickers at this point.

The new S100 is considerably less bulky than the old version. David Wright and Josh Thole (among several other Mets wear it). Check out some pictures of them from this season.

If the old helmets are even a little bit less protective than the new ones, then yes, there is something wrong with the old ones.

those cool flows are garbage. i have seen more of those cracked and destroyed than the old ones without holes and openings.

What are these helmets that Kinsler is wearing in this photo? Andrus has a Cool Flo, but Kinsler has a different one. Maybe these are the new ones? Seen a lot of guys wearing them lately.

Those Cardinals helmets are the old S100's (the original version) and they were huge! The news version, out this year, are much less noticeable for sure. Check out this picture of David Wright with one on:

A few of the Cardinals are wearing the new helmet this season. Size-wise, you really can't tell a difference. Here's a link to a Carlos Beltran helmet the team auctioned online: http://cardinals.auction.mlb.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?prrfnbr=188716018&prmenbr=33285929&aunbr=189062728

Also, I believe MLB has a rule in palce now that if a MLB player has a concussion, he has to at least sit out 7 days. I think that is a little excessive. In the sport of baseball, what are the odds a guy would get a concussion twice in a week? I think sitting 3-4 days is ok, but a week is a little much. From what I heard this rule applies to the post season as well. It will probably take a guy getting a concussion in the post season to really draw notice on the 7-day rule, that or a team in a pennant race at the end of a season.

This looks like it is a knee-jerk reaction to the NFL's stance and issues with concussions too. I would think most concussions in baseball are from slding into second to break up a double play and getting a knee in the head. I would think that woudl happen more than a guy getting hit witha pitch, but perhaps I am wrong.
