Shoeless Joe's bat strikes out at auction

December 11, 2005 BY ANDREW HERRMANN (aherrmann@suntimes.com) Staff Reporter

Ex-White Sox player "Shoeless" Joe Jackson's "Black Betsy" bat went up for auction Saturday -- but it turned out to be a swing and a miss.
There were hopes the bat could fetch more than a half-million dollars. But auction officials said no buyer was found. No other details on the failed sale were offered.
Considered by some to be the most valuable White Sox collectible, the 40-ounce hickory stick was sold by the Jackson family in 2001 to an unidentified buyer for $577,000.

Jackson hit .375 in the 1919 World Series. However, he and seven other "Black Sox" players were banned from baseball after accusations that gamblers paid them to throw the series -- a penalty that ended Jackson's career but raised his profile among sports collectors.
Whether it is the only Black Betsy used by Jackson is a subject of debate, says Dan Imler, auction director for SCP Auctions, which is partnering with Sotheby's on the sale. But, he said, this one has the best proof of authenticity.
Auction officials said Jackson used the bat "throughout his magnificent 13 years in the big leagues." They cite an Aug. 1, 1932, Greenville, S.C., newspaper quoting Jackson as saying he originally received the bat in 1908 from a friend who fashioned it from a piece of hickory. "I've had it ever since and it's never been broke, although it's getting old now and I expect it [to break] at any time," Jackson said.

Babe's bat goes for $120,000
At 40 ounces, Betsy is a big girl compared to today's average bat weight of 32 to 34 ounces.
Jackson is said to have sent the bat to the Spaulding sporting goods company to have it finished. Its dark color came from tobacco juice and oil that Jackson used to rub the bat smooth. There were some successful auction sales Saturday in New York. One of Babe Ruth's bats sold for $120,000, a Mickey Mantle bat went for $48,000, Mantle's 1957 American League MVP award fetched $45,000 and a Ty Cobb bat brought in $45,000.
