View Full Version : Game used item you're tired of seeing.

Within the hobby there invariably are items that for some reason, remain constantly for sale, even though as time passes, the sellers should get the message that no one has interest. I will reveal a few of my favorites. But first, what are yours? Which item, who's listing price has accumulated to never match what profit the seller could finally realize,is your favorite?

Great topic! This one is my favorite:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1990s-PENN-STATE-Game-Worn-Used-College-Riddell-Football-Helmet-BRANDON-SHORT-/360459766319?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item53ed138a2f

OK, where to begin? First off, seriously, you want $2500 for a game worn PSU helmet from a nominal NFL player? Really?? That is assuming it was actually his? He's about $1500 to $1800 overpriced right there.

Second, and my biggest issues. The facemask does not match one Brandon ever wore. He even shows pictures to confirm this! He claims the helmet was made in 1992, yet it has a 1990 re-certification sticker? Finally, the #43 he keeps pointing out written on the inside with a sharpie means nothing other than that was the locker tag assigned to this piece of equipment. Go to CBS auctions and you will see PSU NEVER assign locker tags to correlate with the players actual #.

Ridiculous price, inaccurate player and am I just tired of seeing it listed !

This jersey has been around ebay forever and considering Ichiro's demand I am shocked it has not been picked at a reasonable price by a Japanese collector. I can only imagine the seller is being ridiculous with their demands and does not care if it sells unless they can make a boatload of a profit!

I actually had a buyer for this jersey
and I can't remember the exact number but I offered somewhere around
$12-$13K for it and I received a reply saying how insulted he was by
my offer.

Recently this jersey was being offered on the Japanese auction site
with a reserve with no takers. That's usually the last straw if he's
serious about selling it. Now every Ichiro collector has seen it which
seems to me is his true intention. Most of the top Ichiro collectors in this world are
customers of mine and although they all agree its a nice jersey, its been
sitting stale on the market for so long its no longer desirable. The average
Japanese collector who wants to make a once-in-a-lifetime Ichiro game used
jersey purchase prefers #51 with ICHIRO NOB. The advanced
collector wants something rare that they can show off and brag..not
something that's been sitting on Ebay for more than 2 years.

Judging by his item descriptions, looks like he's using EBAY to show off
his entire collection but I like to use "highest price" as my search query and
I'm sick of seeing this jersey constantly on top so can someone just please
buy it?

No hatred from this quarter, just puzzlement. Among Baseball collectors, I'm guessing that bats are just about the most popular collectible. I can see how if you're mostly focused on another sport, it might be annoying and irrelevant to you...but, then, so would 90% of the posts on this board.

I buy them of my favorite players, if the design is cool and they're very cheap - no more than a couple of bucks - as I would any other card. The little piece of wood or fabric, I couldn't care less about.

Which item, who's listing price has accumulated to never match what profit the seller could finally realize,is your favorite?

I'm not sure that I entirely understand all the provisos and disclaimers contained in your question, but one item that comes to mind, for me, is a certain Stephen Strasberg Team USA jersey, which I've seen listed almost continuously on eBay, with a beginning bid price of $2000, if I recall correctly, for about three years now.

Oh, on the subject of "game used cards", I was thinking that I wouldn't mind having a deck of cards that some of players on my team had played a few hand of Go Fish with during a rain delay. Now, those would be some genuine game used cards!

It's funny, I'm not a big bat collector either, but I don't have a problem with people posting theirs. I mean, I will take a bat if it's a HR bat or has some special character to it. I can even get great enjoyment out of them. But as far as my favorite items are concerned, they are cleats, jerseys, and hats. I love fielding gloves too but can't afford them. :o

I'm glad I didn't ruffle too many feathers with my last post. To gorilla777, isn't this thread about "Game used item(s) you're tired of seeing"? Yes, I'm tired of seeing bats. Throw some golf, ping pong, fishing, bowling and under water basket weaving items on here every once and awhile, but good God the redundant bat posts are overwhelming! Again, I think someone should create a thread for all the people collecting bats. Thank you for reading. - the minority. Just having fun, guys! :D

Or, since it seems to me that the majority of members are primarily Baseball fans, and that the vast majority of those folks do collect bats, maybe there should be a "bat free" section of the board that focuses on what you are interested in collecting. (Which is...?)

I don't collect bats at all so I'm on the same page about seeing game used bats everywhere. I'm also not a huge fan of game used batting gloves. To me - And this is just my opinion - bats and batting gloves are like pennys are in change. They're everywhere and everyone has them, they are almost throw aways. Jerseys, hats, helmets are what you see when you see the player. But everyone collects what they like - if we all collected the same things it would be boring.

If it's of any assistance, I think the OP was referring to a specific item that seems to have been on eBay since 1999 or a jersey that seems to be in every auction. LandRun happens to feel tired of a specific type of item, in this case: bats, in general. Fair enough.

I'm going to shadow so other posters here and say Game used cards need to be removed from the Game used ebay search.

Amen. While they're at it - and, of course, eBay would never do this, because they get more money when Sellers list in multiple (wrong) categories - there should be some mechanism for removing things like bobbleheads, player photos, commemorative milk bottles, etc, from the "Game Used Memorabilia" category, and giving the offending Seller a virtual smack upside the head.

Ebay offering free 50 lisings a month doesn't help the cause either.

There are a couple of Rays items I have seen on ebay for well over a year and I have emailed the seller with tremendous proof that the item is not game used. I have ahd both sellers admit it isn't gmae used, yet still continue to list it. I could write 5-6 paragraphs on each case of the 2 fake items, but that is a whole other story.

Tired of seeing "photo matched" items listed with pictures that don't even qualify as a style match.

Also tired of seeing items listed with five paragraphs of small print. If you put game used in the tittle (or put it in the game used category), I should not have to read all kinds of crap to discover that it really is a pro cut or just like game used.

It is a sweet jersey! Sadly it's his delusional agent from Pac Signatures that are selling these items for him. I have written the agent several times and told him to comparison shop players equal to Michael in the NFL and see how low their items sell for as opposed to what is is asking. Heck the Seahawks will directly sell you one of his Captain patch worn jerseys for only $300!

To me the agent knows it's overpriced, because he'll come back and write "we'll I can take $6000". As if that's a deal? It is a shame because these have been listed there for over a year now.

Also I am so sick of seeing some casual fan get a cheap walmart $15 jersey autographed and they think it is magically work $300 then. Just annoying to go through the mountains of that LEGITIMATE JUNK.

I don't think authentic signed jerseys have really any value. Yes, I know people can't afford a signed Peyton Manning game used jersey, but a signed authentic jersey to me isn't really special, I don't care which recent era who the player is. I would rather see a signed game sued jersey swatch card than a signed authentic jersey, that really isn't tough to get.

---

Also can be said for signed game used items, that sellers think the value doubles just because of an autograph that I will try to wipe off anyways.

This Notre Dame Jim Stone jersey was on ebay for two years. Got so tired of it that I videomatched it and made him an offer! Match on the position of the name compared to the rear numerals, other video from that game (Pitt Notre Dame 1978, great Montana 4th-quarter comeback) confirms names screened directly on the jersey, some great repairs on this one too.

The overexposed 1996 Yankees GU cap worn by and signed by Paul O'Neill is back up on Bay for the umpteenth time in the last 3 years. It never draws bids, and the price ($800) is never reduced. You'd think that the seller would catch the drift, but, apprently not.
