I've contacted REA regarding this "88-89" Louisville slugger Barry Bonds bat.

Several issues

- The MLB blackened out emblem didn't appear on these bats till late 2000.
- The center brand fonts and sizing are from the year 2000.

However the stamping under "BARRY BONDS" is "Louisville Slugger@"

Attach are photos of the REA "88-89" bat, a 2000 Piazza WS bat, and a 88-89 Bonds Louisville.

I know from 99 on Bonds started using SAM bats exclusively. Could HB have still issued Barry H238 bats in 2000 but with Louisville Slugger verses "San Francisco Giants".

This is certainly an oddity.

But in my opinion this bat is not an 88-89.

This was asked about a couple years ago....

I am confused by this item:

http://bid.robertedwardauctions.com/...x?itemid=14495 (http://bid.robertedwardauctions.com/bidplace.aspx?itemid=14495)

This bat has the filled MLB player logo that I thought dated it to around 2001, but MEARS dates it to 1988/1989. Was there a period where they placed the logo like this in 88/89? I was not aware of it. Yet there is no team name...should be on there in 2001.

Then answered by Mike Specht:

Hi Matt--- The MLB logo first appeared in 1989, either branded or foil stamped between the centerbrand and barrel label, and either with outlined (MFBO) or filled-in (MFBF) batter portrait.

UPDATE NOTE -- the reference year cited above was transposed and should correctly read 1998 instead of 1989. --- Mike Specht May 2012

The REA Bonds bat also has those funny looking black ball marks that look they were made by the dimpled balls that are used in batting cages.
