I recently bought a 1994 Craig Biggio Astros BP jersey from a popular GU dealer from houston (ebay seller: newsprint-man). The jersey originally came from Hartel Sports. I did a little research and was able to confirm that Hartel pretty much bought the whole Astros inventory in 1994. So everything pretty much jives. My question is...Is the tagging correct for this style Batting jersey? Sorry for the picture quality its all I got, I put up another video of a Bagwell the same year same style tagging from the same seller. ANY HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED. Happy Hollidays!!

By the way still waiting to hear back from Mike at Hartel!! probably busy...

The only possible problem I see with the jersey is that the 125th Anniversary patch is missing. That patch was on all of the 1994 BP's. Some of those jerseys were used in spring training 1995 and had the patch removed. If there is evidence of the patch being removed it would indicate that it was used in 1994 and spring training 1995. All of the others I have seen with no 125th Anniversary patch were team issued.

Thanks for your opinion what should the majestic wash tagging be 6000 or 0006?

Does the jersey have the retail 6000 tagging?

I was looking at a 1994 Bagwell BP jersey from the same seller a while back. The jersey was also void of the 1994 MLB Anniversary patch. It also had the retail 6000 tagging. Based on those two factors, I decided to pass on the jersey.

This is good information, AJ. I appreciate your sharing it with us.

To be honest, after the thread exposing newsprint-man's questionable Biggio, I wasn't eager to buy items from him.

Guys thanks for the help....There is definitely some ambiguity going on here with Majestic, for the record I do have a couple retail authentics of the same style Astros BP that is lettered in sizing as (XL,L,S) which is consistent with tagging on retail styles, the quality of a retail 94 BP is made of very lightweight cheap mesh. The Biggio I have pictured weighs alot more and the quality in the stitching is better than the retail. However I did read a blog recently that was written by Dave Mediema which stated that the 6000 code was not adapted as a retail code with Majestic until 1997. From my understanding I hope that is whats going on here. Hopefully Ill be able able to hear back from Hartel Sports or Mediema by the end of the week. Thanks ahead Dave if youre reading this.

Heres a couple threads were I see a couple more 6000 coded Gamers:

As far as the 6000 tag code goes, that WAS a pro code until a 1997-98 transition, when it was relegated to retail status in favor of the 0006 code.

Tagging looks OK for 1994, and the Hartels did buy a large quantity of Astros 1994-99 equipment after the team switched styles.

I have two 1995 Cubs BP jerseys handed to me by the players who wore them, and both carry a 6000 tag. Finally, the Cubs stripped the MLB125 patches off their BP jerseys before any were marketed, so that's likely the case with the Astros, as well.

I currently have 49 1994 Astros jerseys in my collection of which 3 are BP's. I have seen about 30-35 BP jerseys in person. All of the BP's had the 6000 code. The BP's I have seen can be broke down into three types. 1. Used in 1994 with 125th patch. 2. Never used issued with 125th patch missing. 3. 125th patch removed by team after being used in 1994 and then used in spring training 1995. The vast majority of 1994 BP's I have seen still have the 125th patch.

Scott,

You are correct on the 1994 BPs. Floyd told me years ago that when they made the bulk purchase, only a handful of BPs came from 1994, the rest were stripped of the patch and reused. The ones saved were Bagwell, Biggio, Caminiti, Gonzalez, Finley, and maybe a couple others.

I would call this an issued jersey.

Thanks,

Thank you guys again for the help...I just talked to Hartel Sports Mike Armstrong and even showed him some better detailed pictures. He concurs exactly with what Scott and egameused mentioned. Everything adds up to at least a game Issue Biggio with them, and it does indeed show some wear, stitch marks and evidence of where the 125th anniversary patch would have went. Mike is working on getting me a letter of provenance after consulting with Bruce over the pics and prior owners.
