Is it true that many times spare jerseys are left over from the previous season and used the following season?

Is it true that many times spare jerseys are left over from the previous season and used the following season?

Occasionally, this happened in the 80's from what I've seen and discussed with other collectors.

The newer Red Sox jerseys use strip tagging to denote the year/player, but this appears to be pretty inconsistent.

What year is the jersey from?

the year tag says 1997 but actual year was 1998.

It happens, although not as regularly as, say, 30 years ago. If the jersey saw any 1997 use, it should have the Jackie Robinson patch or a stitching imprint of it on the right sleeve. Also, the Red Sox (I believe) wore game jerseys at home in spring training 1998. That could explain the inconsistency.
