The consignor to the WQED auction was Joe Gordon the PR manager of the Steelers so on the surface a solid source. I met him one time, when he was kicking my Dad out of the booth! He was friends with Don Criqui who had invited us up when he was doing radio on a Monday night game (I was maybe 10 years old!). Based on that experience it's certainly not out of my realm of possibility that he misrepresented this jersey, it doesn't look game-used to me. Would have to be 1982, first year for Russell. There's a slight chance this is the jersey Dorsett wore on the 99-yard run against Minnesota in early January 1983 (82 season) but I haven't been able to get a clear shot (would be a HUGE item if that could be photomatched). Nameplate font is way too thick to be a 1983 version. Here's the link:

Here's the closest photo I've been able to find, could be a photo-shoot worn jersey: http://www.ebay.com/itm/TONY-DORSETT-2004-FLEER-GREATS-GOTT-GAME-USED-JERSEY-/150565010718?pt=US_Football&hash=item230e5fbd1e#ht_568wt_907

According to the donor form, it was donated by the Steelers

Russell Athletic into the 1983 season used the black and gold logo. At some point during the 1983 season, the company switched to the red, white and blue logo.

The second I looked at it I knew it was fake. The fonts are wrong for the "33" on the front and back; the TV numbers on the shoulders are too chunky; and the lettering used on the nameplate is inauthentic.

For starters, the fake jersey has six angles on the inside of the number 3, compared to three angles on the real jerseys.

The TV numbers on the fake jersey don't match the TV numbers on the jerseys from 1982-1985, which were much thinner.

Finally, the nameplate on the fake jersey doesn't match the tall, thin, stenciled letters used from 1982 to this day.

Slats!
You are the man! Thanks! You sure know your Cowboys! Thanks again! If I have any other questions about a jersey I'm going to you first! Thanks for the insight and pics!

Man, chalk this one up to another vintage charity auction jersey gone wrong. The story that goes with this jersey is probably 100% true, and the jersey probably was even donated by the Cowboys organization. With that being said, I'll bet the team had several jerseys made up just like this one to handle charity requests. Back then, who knew the difference, or even cared? Now the jersey has surfaced over 25 years later, and it is being met by a different, high-dollar collecting world.

And it's up to $300 with five days left. I wonder if I should contact the seller or eBay itself and send them this link.

Now over 500.00. Just wondering if you presented the seller with your information.

No, I haven't. He's just gonna say that he has a COA and that's good enough for him. And eBay wont do anything because canceling the auction will cost them a fat commission.

For the hell of it, I sent him an email. His reply:

I did, but I didn't linger on it too long. Not really a helmet guy.

Well, the bidding jumped from $550 to $910 in the last thirty seconds of the auction. That's a hefty price to pay for a team-issued souvenir...
