Michael,

Lots of bidding on this jersey but one key oddity...the fact that Rawlings manufactured all Royals jerseys from 1987 through 1991 (with Russell taking over in 1992). Did Saberhagen wear Wilson when the rest of the team was wearing Rawlings? I know practices like this went on at the time (i.e. Biggio wearing Victory). I did see the jersey but figured that it could be a salesman's sample done up by Wilson while Rawlings had the contract... the fact that it's a star player might add merit to that?

That as the third 1987-91 Wilson Royals jersey I've seen. The other two were commons (Pat Tabler and someone else whose name I don't recall), all 3 were roads, the other two were both 1987. Apparently, a fe Royals ordered from Wilson on their own...kind of like the mid-1990s, when Barry Bonds convinced several teammates to order on their own from Rawlings.
I have never seen a 1987-91 Bo or Brett jersey made by Wilson, and I've never seen a home white by Wilson in that same time span.

Good question, while researching whether to bid on the auction or not, the manufacturer definitely came into play. I know that Rawlings made most Royals jerseys in 1989 as far as I was aware of. The "8" used on the jersey is different than the "8" used on the Rawlings jerseys. I did find some pictures in '89 of Saberhagen wearing this style as well as pictures of him wearing the Rawlings style "8."

The Wilson style has two internal rectangles (sharp corners) in the middle of the 8, the Rawlings style has an octagon?

Michael,

Fantastic research! Given you put to rest the doubt about the manufacturer, the jersey sold for a great price in the end. I wonder how many people withheld from bidding because of that 1 doubt alone.

I actually have an interesting story regarding a Royals powder blue #18 jersey. About ten years ago I bought a batch of powder blues on eBay that included a #18 jersey with the NOB of Damon. Well, I’m a big Johnny Damon fan so I jumped on it. And if I recall, I got it for a steal. So the Damon jersey was a Rawlings, tagged set 1, 1988, size 42 with the Damon NOB nametape. I am pretty sure the jersey was worn in the summer of 1992 while he played rookie league ball with the Gulf Coast Royals. I was able to to somewhat photomatch the jersey with a few of his early baseball cards.
When the Saberhagen jersey was posted on eBay recently it FINALLY dawned on me to take a much closer look at my Damon jersey. I was well aware that my Damon jersey had been handed down from the major league team, but I never put two and two together. Until I held the Damon jersey up to the light to reveal … yes, the name Saberhagen. So this is a jersey that was worn by both a Royals hall of famer and a future Royals hall of famer.
