Ed Macauley, an NBA Hall of Famer who was involved in a trade that brought the Boston Celtics Bill Russell, died Tuesday at age 83. The announcement was made by his alma mater, St. Louis University.

Macauley was traded by the Celtics to the St. Louis Hawks in 1956, along with the draft rights to Cliff Hagen, in exchange for Russell. As luck would have it, the next two NBA Championship series were between Boston and St. Louis with each club winning once.

Macauley began his career with the Celtics in 1950-51, and was wearing the green through 1955-56. After the trade, he spent three seasons with the Hawks, retring after the 1958-59 season. His jersey number (22) was retired by the Celtics.
