I am puzzled at this recent jersey that I bought for a great price off ebay. Its was listed as a 1974 Red Sox Away jersey made by Mcauliffe worn (and tagged) in 1974 for Frank Malzone as a Spring Training coach. Now Ive done a little research on the matter (no pictures recovered of him wearing it) but I did read that he coached for a short time for the 1974 spring training Red Sox. The seller also advised me that he was kin to Frank Malzone and received this from him. Can anyone tell me what i have here? The pictures sort of suck but the lettering and numbers on the jersey look very original with plenty of wear and puckering, and no signs of a number change. Also did the commemorative patch arrive in 74 or was this jersey reused by another player with this number in '75? any help would be great.

Would like to see blue trim around the McAuliffe tag. Perhaps the below link would help.

cohiba,

thanks for the insight, I compared the tagging as well to the Henderson guide which indeed shows blue tagging around the Mcauliffe tag. So what Lon is saying is that the 80s (special order jerseys) from Mcauliffe were basically custom made for the buyer?? If so, were these given the same tagging as a 74 gamer? with the only discrepancy being a blue outline over the tagging? If so its kind of a big let down but all in all like I said I didnt pay a whole lot for it.

If made for player/coach use, it would almost have to have been made for Malzone. As far as players go, #11 was worn by a bunch of diminutuve infielders in the 1972-78 range (Luis Aparicio, Kim Andrew and Ramon Aviles, to name three. All of these guys took 38s or 40s.

The patch did not appear until 1975.

Malzone has sold/let go of gamers since he retired. Back in the mid-1980s, he sold me Red Sox jerseys worn by both him (as a coach) and Ted Williams (as a spring coach). He had more, but stopped selling to me. Later I found out that a New England area collector told him (falsely, at the time) that I was selling the stuff for a profit, apparently hoping to steal a source from me.

Dave

Is it fair to say that this jersey was worn by Malzone as a Spring Training Coach for one season. The seller also had made some admissions that his wife was Malzone's daughter and that he would be selling many more other items. Dave, Do your Malzone game jerseys marry up to the specifics of mine? i.e size tagging etc?

Although I kept for several years, I did finally sell it for wedding funds.

Mine was a flannel, so comparisons wouldn't always be on the same page as a knit. The size, from what I remember, was either 42 or 44, but McAuliffe's tagging on flannles was different than the design and arrangement used on knits.
