Johnny Schmitz, a pitcher who spent 13 years in the Majors, died October 5 in his hometown of Wausau, WI.

Schmitz was a Major Leaguer from 1941-1956, missing the 1943-45 seasons for military service. The biggest chunk of his career was spent with the Cubs for whom he took the mound until the mid-1951 trade with Brooklyn that involved teammate Andy Pafko as the centerpiece. After the Dodgers, he also threw for the Yankees, Reds, Senators Red Sox and Orioles.

In 1947, his 13-18 ledger found him leading the National League pitchers in losses. The following year, he reveresed that record, bringing with it a 2.94 ERA.
