Julius Erving was one of my favorite players as a kid growing up while watching the Nets - I'd rather have a Ruth or Gehrig bat for this kind of money though!!! Jersey closed for $120,789 before the hammer!! I bet the consignor is a happy camper right now.........

Circa 1973-74 Julius "Dr. J" Erving New York Nets ABA Game-Used Home Jersey
Lot # 60

Erving began his professional career in the American Basketball Association with the Virginia Squires and the New York Nets. Widely regarded as the greatest player of his time, he is often considered to have been the main catalyst for the ABA-NBA merger in 1976. A 6-7, 210-pound small forward, he also played for 11 years with the Philadelphia 76ers, leading them to the NBA crown in 1983. In his five ABA seasons, Erving won three scoring titles, three Most Valuable Player Awards and two league championships. During his 11-year NBA career Erving was an All-Star each season, the league's Most Valuable Player in 1981 and a five-time member of the All-NBA First Team. He scored 30,026 points in his combined ABA and NBA career; only Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Wilt Chamberlain, Karl Malone and Michael Jordan have scored more points in the history of professional basketball. On the front tail bottom is the "RAWLINGS" manufacturer's size 42 tag. Adjacent to this tag is another tag that reads "2" LONGER." On the front of the jersey is "NETS" in red tackle twill. Below this and on back is the player number "32" in red tackle twill. Across the back is "ERVING" in red tackle twill. There are three stars on the front left in white tackle twill. The jersey shows heavy game use and appears to have no alterations of any kind.

I saw this price, also. I also saw this jersey in person at the National. This is the record price for a basketball jersey, beating out the LSU Pistol jersey also sold about a year ago by GFC (slightly less than 100 Gs). Really nice shirt, but I'd take 60 $2,000 jerseys.

I was watching this one too. And I mean just watching...not watching with the thought of possibly bidding.

This was the first ABA jersey of Doc's that I'd ever seen up for bid. I've seen a Squires jersey in the gallery at Dick's Courtroom and I've talked to a fellow that got to see a 2nd year road blue Squires in person. But have never seen one up for bid. I guessed that it would go in the $30,000-40,000 range. Guess I was a little off. :)

Also have never seen a legit 1976-77 Erving Sixers (first year in NBA) or 1977-78 (last year for the road blue) jersey up for bid.

Anyone know if the winner was bidding in person at the HOF?

I was a student at Univ. of Massachusetts from 1969-1971. I saw Dr. J. when he played there. Unfortunately, this was the period when dunking was not allowed in college games! In order to get into a game, it was necessary to stand in line for a long time. About 20 years ago I collected the vast majority of his basketball cards and I had Dr. J. sign one of my UMass yearbooks. I never collected any of his game used uniforms or shoes.
