thru SCP this fall, FYI. It looks like some incredible stuff.

There is a Julius Erving collector on this site who probably will have their head explode.
Here is a link to the preview photos - http://www.scpauctions.com/

It should be fun to watch this auction....

Awesome stuff! I doubt Erving is hurting for money so I often wonder why athletes like him put everything up for auction. Maybe the money's going to charity or something but this stuff should really all be going to Springfield...

Actually, he was recently charged with ripping an investor off in a ponzi-type scheme. Ask Otis, he'll know the details.

Pittsburgh Pisces warmup...Aqua blue custom Converse. Wow..sweet like bear meat. Doc obviously owes somebody some money. The hall of fame really should buy some of that stuff.

greg .. are you going to bid on any shirts in scp auction? and what do you think of the doc shirt on gfc?

otismalibu
10-28-2011, 03:30 PM
That stuff is outta my league.

The road 76ers at GFC with the 78 6 tag?

GFC sold that same jersey a few years back. I have the catalog page. Says "Icons of the Hardwood" at the top of the page and G-U Jerseys of the Top 50. Not sure what year that auction was from.

Looks fine, for as much as one can tell from an online photo.

Would be from the first year that Erving wore the road red, with the Sixers.

The right shoe start at 200 usd, the left one at 250 ... which will win ?

otismalibu
10-28-2011, 04:37 PM
Don't know which one will win, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them reunited.

And, in time, they could end up showing "light but definite use" and be traced back to the 1980 NBA Finals.

greg.. does it strike you as peculiar that the GFC shirt has a year tag and player #tag... yet the SCP shirts (auctioned from doc's own collection) lacks both on both 83 and 85 shirt... do you own any sixers shirt from that era that have year and player tag sewn under pearon/manuf tag?

otismalibu
11-11-2011, 01:09 PM
I think the only Erving 76ers jersey I've ever seen with both the year and number tag is that one in GFC. It's one of the older NBA gamers of his that I've seen. Usually, I only see the number tag on shorts and warmups...where there really is no other way to identify who the item belongs to.

Maybe Pearson quit sewing them on. The Erving Squires that sold some time ago also had a number tag, but is there really a need when there are numbers on the jersey?

A former Pearson employee would be the one to ask. :)

Obviously, you'd like to see the piece in person before buying, but based on the auction photos, there's no red flags, IMO. Everything looks correct and the tag is comparable to the other 78-79 tag below.

I wish all Erving 80s jerseys had the year tag sewn on. Look at the 2 80s game jerseys at SCP. They're dating them based on the tagging in the shorts. How can you tell the 82-83 jersey from the 84-85 jersey? You can't.

Of course, I would also factor in Erving's stats for that year, how the Sixers performed, etc. He had a sub-par year and the Sixers lost in the Eastern Conference semis.

I think it's a #21, but I don't see that number on the 78-79 roster. The jersey was given to Eric Money when he joined the team, but he was #22.

If I thought it was a good deal and in my budget, sure I'd bid. Keep in mind, a Doc jersey will routinely sell for more than my entire collection is worth.

As I stated before, I factor in more than authenticity. For example, the shoes below. Nice shoes. No doubts about authenticity and each one is autographed. But...they were obtained after a pre-season game. I know the date of the game, the final score and how many points Erving had while wearing these shoes for the last time - but it was a pre-season game. And they're StarTechs...and the signatures were sealed...and I know he didn't wear them in the playoffs the season before.

Otis, thanks for posting these Fish photos. I told you my guess for this 74 ABA ring was 100K. Went for 460K. What's the record for a championship ring?

The Pisces/Pythons stuff went for very modest prices.

I have no idea why 1978 & 1984 AS game rings went for more than his 1976 ABA title rings. Looks to be about 3.5 million with the 20% added.

otismalibu

GFC has always done well with Dr. J. jerseys. They've had multiple Erving jerseys that went between $100-200K.

People went a little crazy in the SCP auction. Over $15K for some obscure plaque? I guess they wanted something (anything) from his collection.

Lot #12 - 1977 game shorts. Would have been nice to see the tagging, like they did with the last pair of 1977 game shorts.

Lot #25 & #26 – 1985 & 1986 AS rings. Why would the 1986 ring fetch twice as much as the 1985 ring? The 1986 AS game was in Dallas, not LA.

Lot #31 – game worn warm-up pants. These look to be retail pants, not game worn warm-ups. No snaps or proper tagging. Compare to lot #48. Could buy these type of pants for $60 in the NBA catalog (80s)

http://www.scpauctions.com/LotDetail.aspx?lotid=17910&searchby=0&searchvalue=None&page=0&sortby=0&displayby=2&lotsperpage=100&category=1&seo=JULIUS-%22DR.-J%22-ERVING

Lots #59 & #60 – 70s game worn shorts. Would love to know what these are. Not Squires, Nets or Sixers shorts.
