I was at the store tonight, and saw one of the Hair-a-tage NIKE shirts with "Pops" Willie Stargell on them. I went home and showed my wife some clips of him, and she noticed I do the same bat twirl while I am waiting for the pitch (I play in a summer baseball league, as well as softball for my company) he invented. I told her how all the kids growing up outside of the 'Burg did that twirl, emulating the man, Willie.

Sadly, I have NO game used Pirates gear anymore (just a team signed cap), as their ownership has turned me off since Willie's passing in 2001. But it made me nostalgic, and I am thinking of getting back into collecting them.

So, I would love to see your Bucco collections on here! Especially with the team being at .500 this "late" in the season.

I'll start your Pirates thread off with my Pops Stargell game used Bicentennial bat. It's the only game used item of his that I own and hope to one day own one of his game used jerseys.

THAT is awesome, Dewey! Man, I would love to own anything Willie game used. Heck, even an authentic autograph would be nice at this point.

My absolute favorite, and the classiest player I ever rooted for.

Thanks! I've posted this before but Willie's grew up in my hometown and went to my old high school. Our high school field is named after him. I recently picked up a couple of his Mitchell & Ness jerseys because that's the closest I'm going to get to one anytime soon!

Hey Joba,

I used to have some Bucco SGA bobbleheads, but sold all of those or gave them to family after moving from coast to coast years ago. I will try to dig up an old photo of them tonight.

Wow, a Buccos thread, alright!

Pictured are my game used jerseys (l to r, Aramis Ramirez, Adam Laroche, Nate McLouth and Fernando Gonzalez) and hats (Rick Rhoden). My favorite is the 1973 Gonzalez because it still has the commerative "21" patch for Roberto Clemente, something very rare since almost all of these jerseys were stripped of the patch and recycled through the minors. But Gonzalez got to take his home (I have an LOA from him).

Four items, the best of which is a 2001 9/11 cap given to me by Kevin Young. The US flag on the side is directly embroidered into the cap fabric. The 2002-07 versions just had a flag patch heat-pressed on the cap fabric.

I also have a 2002 Bruce Tanner cap, and BP jerseys of John Grabow and Dave Clark.

Although an Orioles fan I really like the different early Pirates knits. I would like to find an early 70's road and the yellow and black versions from the late 70's early 80's. Here's what I have so far. From what I can tell the first is a Gene Clines 1970-71 jersey. I haven't been able to pinpoint the year. The 2nd is a 1978 Jerry Reuss.

Thank you very much! I became a big fan of "Uncle Bill" after meeting him at a couple of signings. Apart from these Pirates jerseys, I have several of his Mets gamers (1984-1989) and one from his championship yr with the Marlins. I had the chance to land one of his Phillies jerseys but never was able to agree on a price.

Not the best pict of the bobbleheads, but my old SGA of Pops, Roberto, Jason Kendell, The Parrot, Pokey Reese and Jason Bay. Super Mario is in there as well.

Also included a picture of "The Cobra", who I met at a signing in SF. Super nice guy, was charging only $20 and loved hearing that I rooted for him as a child in the 'Burg...mainly because of this (last picture) and because he had that bad@ss nickname. One of the HOF's true omission travesties.

As stated before: Pics of my tabata, walker, alvarez, and cutch bats. Note the nob on the cutch bat. Easy photo match to his homerun last year verse josh johnson (mlb authenticated to have broken the following game). In addition, I think I have a photo match to an earlier game in the month when he got hit in the head vs the reds and hit a hr the nex game. Also, tabata, walker, and alvarez bats are from their rookie year!

Pirates team signed cap from a game I attended at the Oakland Coliseum in 2004. Got most of the sigs from players coming off of the BART ramp, including my favorite player Craig Wilson, Jack Wilson, Manager Lloyd McClendon and Oliver Perez, among others.

Best part of this is when Craig came up to bat, this guy in front of me, sitting between two girls, kept yelling "look at Goldie locks! Love the hair, Goldie!" Wilson promptly smacked a three run homer, and I stood up behind him, clapping "Way to go Goldie! Nice HR Goldie!" His two lady friend were cracking up laughing at him, while he scowled at me. My wife's absolute favorite memory EVER at a ball game we attended together :).

Jeff Bagwell Pittsburgh Three Rivers Stadium Home Run Marker w/ Team LOA

This marker commemorates the 9th upper deck HR hit in Pittsburgh's Three Rivers Stadium history. This marker was placed over the spot where Bagwell blasted a roughly 460 ft HR into the left field seats in 1991. It came with a team LOA issued at the auction for stadium assets in 2001 after Three Rivers closed.

That's really cool. As someone with one of these markers, I would love to know a bit more about them. Did they place them over the seats? Did anyone ever sit up there, or did they preclude people from sitting in any seat with a marker on it? It would be neat to find out more about these artifacts.

From my memory, we did sit in those seats, basically just to say we did, and they had painted numbers on the seat back (facing out to be seen, where your back would rest). I also remember the views from up there were horrible and it was rare anyone was ever sitting up there anyway!

What I'm curious about is that if these numbers were painted on seats, why my Bagwell marker looks nothing like a seat back?

I'd love to hear more about these, as my Bagwell home run marker is one of the more intriguing items I own.

You know, I noticed your sign looked metal and thought that was intriguing. I only personally saw seats that were painted into the early 80's. By the late 80's-90's when I went, I actually was watching the game and not running to the upper deck :), so I never saw Bags HR markers. I did some research, and found this list of players that hit them into the upper deck at Three Rivers:

1: Willie Stargell - 8/9/70 off Mets' Ron Taylor (RF) 469'
2: Willie Stargell - 5/30/71 off Cubs' Ken Holtzman (RF) 458'
3: Willie Stargell - 6/20/71 off Expos' Howie Reed (RF) 472'
4: Bob Robertson - 7/16/71 off Padres' Steve Arlin (LF) 456'
5: Willie Stargell - 5/31/73 off Braves' Gary Gentry (RF) 468'
6: Greg Luzinski - 4/18/79 off Pirates' Don Robinson (LF) 483'
7: Bobby Bonilla - 7/12/87 off Padres' Eric Show (RF) 454'
8: Howard Johnson - 4/15/91 off Pirates' Zane Smith (LF) 456'
9: Jeff Bagwell - 5/5/91 off Pirates' Bob Kipper (LF) 472'
10: Mark Whiten - 8/11/93 off Pirates' Blas Minor (RF) 464'
11: Glenallen Hill - 5/6/94 off Pirates' Denny Neagle (LF) 457'
*: Frank Thomas - 7/11/94 in all star home run hitting contest (LCF) 519'
12: Jeff Bagwell - 5/29/96 off Pirates' Danny Darwin (LF) 459'
13: Devon White - 6/16/96 off Pirates' Denny Neagle (LF-facade) 456'I also was able to find this photo, (the only one I could find on the internet) of a painted seat. It is above the numbered facade, to the right and is painted black with a white number. Kind of hard to see, but you can notice it if you look hard enough:

My thoughts are maybe "Bags" hit the concrete facade, and they attached a metal marker up there instead, because it did not land in a seat. I know at the Vet in Philly, they installed a marker for "Pops" moon shot (top right):

It was fun looking this up, and taking a trip down memory lane!

To answer my last reply before having to justify it, I meant how Pops and Cutch carry themselves with dignity on and off the field, as opposed to Bonds. He was an arrogant pr!ck in the 'Burg way before he went from Bruce Banner to the Incredible Hulk out west.

Thanks for all that info. I've had fun researching it as well. I wish I could have grown up in a city that had the amount of baseball history as Pittsburgh. I grew up in the suburbs of Seattle, so my first baseball memories were of the Kingdome - nothing to brag about. :o

Ironically, the closet stadium I now live near is Seattle's Safeco field, about 3 hours north from me! I will tell you, it was not easy finding the data I found on those HR markers. I looked at ALOT of old stadium sites and PA historical sites for information. Sadly, for a place that was around for 30 years, they sure did not document Three Rivers very well. I am just as guilty, because I guess you assume it will always be there. I wish I had saved my programs from my youth, but they have been long gone due to way too many moves. You might start there, with old programs and media guides. They may be of some use and I am sure fairly cheap.

I did, however, dig up some photos I took at games from my youth.

The first one is Rick Rhoden talking on the mound to Tony Pena, I would say 1983-especially judging by the clothes in the crowd!

The second is of a Steelers-Chiefs game in 1984, where Pittsburgh had a FG blocked for a TD, Kickoff and punt returns on them as well. Sad...

The third photo is of a much younger me before the 1992 NLCS vs ATL, and the Buccos did win that one!

The last shoot is actually awesome, because I had the wherewithal to take a photo of the outside of Three Rivers Stadium!

Hey Frik,

Well, I found out, unbeknownst to me, my Dad still had a saved a program from one of the games we attended in '86! I earlier showed picts of inside Three Rivers from that game below, against Philly. Sadly, they do not even talk about the HR markers-even then! I did however, find out a fact I never realized: Jason Thompson of the Buccos was only the 7th player in MLB history (then) to hit 100 or more HRs in each league. Wow, how times have changed ;).

@Chuck, awesome jerseys! I love the throwback 70s stripe one, lost an auction for one of those myself awhile back. Also miss the grey road stripes as well. Nice collection.

A shame the Buccos were on the wrong end of a miserable call last night in that 19 inning epic vs ATL.

I got ahold of this orange seatback from Three Rivers, with Jay Bell's Pittsburgh number, '3', on it, made a sort of collage, and got Jay to sign and inscribe it for me a few years ago.

Yeah, there are bad calls and there was that one. Sadly, the lose last night took some wind out of the Buccos sails, because they just lost 2-1 in the bottom of the 10th (only) tonight.

I do hope they can continue their magic against Filth-a-delphia.

I loved me some Jay Bell back in the day. I was glad he finally got his ring with Arizona. I still remember when he won his gold glove and broke the Wizard's strangle hold on the award at short. Nice seat and shot of Three Rivers!

I was really happy to see the Buccos get a couple veteran bats, even if it were only marginal veteran players like Derrek Lee and Ryan Ludwick, for near nothing in return.

I know the critics will pan these moves (as I do to an extend on ownership's cheapness), but Lee is a MAJOR improvement from Overbay at first base and Ludwick will help solidify an outfield that already has studs like All Star Andrew McCutchen and Neil Walker.

At this point, ANY offense is a good offense for this team! I just fear too little to late, as it came after a rough Philly series.

Thank goodness the Cubs come to town, and I think a series sweep is realistic and can possibly propel them back into first by week's end!

A nice historical piece, Pirates Jason Schmidt game worn jersey from 1997. I just LOVE this style with the pinstripes and cursive Pittsburgh font!

So, long and short of it, not only does it have the Jackie Robinson patch, but this was the LAST YEAR anyone could wear #42 in the MLB, before they retired the number. Jason was one of the LAST players (defiantly the last Pirate) to wear this number, before he was forced to switch (to #22, as is).

Great jersey from a great player, and a nice guy to boot from when I met him years ago!

I thought players who were already wearing #42 could continue for the duration of their careers. Hence, Mariano Rivera. Where the Pirates different from other teams with regards to wearing Robinson's number?

I did some research, and found this out:

"When MLB decided to retire 42 in 1997, acting commissioner Bud Selig announced that to honor Jackie Robinson no player from now on will be issued the late Hall of Famer's number. However, the players who currently wear the number can keep it for the rest of their careers. The 12 major-league players wearing No. 42 as of Tuesday night:

Mo Vaughn, Boston
Butch Huskey, New York Mets
Tom Goodwin, Kansas City
Mariano Rivera, New York Yankees
Mike Jackson, Cleveland
Lenny Webster, Baltimore
Jason Schmidt, Pittsburgh
Jose Lima, Houston
Scott Karl, Milwaukee
Dennis Cook, Florida
Kirk Rueter, San Francisco
x-Marc Sagmoen, Texas

x-Sagmoen, who made his major-league debut Tuesday night, was randomly assigned 42 by the Rangers when he joined the team. After the game, he announced he would switch to No. 37 because he did not feel ``worthy'' to wear 42.

Jason Schmidt was the last player on the Pirates to wear number 42, as all of Major League Baseball (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_League_Baseball) retired it for Jackie Robinson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackie_Robinson) in 1997. Schmidt then switched to number 22 for the remainder of his stay with the team, and has worn number 29 after leaving the Pirates."

It does not really say he was forced to switch, or did it by his own volition. Still a nice historical Buccos piece to own :).

The two Chicago teams had no regular season wearers of #42 in 1997. Roger McDowell wore #42 in spring training with the White Sox, but was cut, and the Cub that had #42, coach Dan Radison, voluntarily gave it up in favor of #3.

I'll bet there was a lot of pressure to switch numbers. Not sure I like the idea of all teams retiring #42. If so, why wasn't the honor extended to Clemente and #21?

Interesting argument, I read up on this and found the following information:

"Roberto Clemente was elected to the Hall of Fame (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Baseball_Hall_of_Fame_and_Museum) posthumously in 1973, thus becoming the first Latin American to be selected and the only current Hall of Famer for whom the mandatory five-year waiting period has been waived since the wait was instituted in 1954. Clemente is also the first Hispanic player to win a World Series as a starter (1960), win a league MVP award (1966) and win a World Series MVP award (1971).
Clemente's #21 remains active in Major League Baseball, and is worn by multiple players. Sammy Sosa wore #21 throughout his career as a tribute to his childhood hero.[61] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roberto_Clemente#cite_note-60) The number is unofficially retired in the Puerto Rico Baseball League (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puerto_Rico_Baseball_League). While the topic of retiring #21 throughout Major League Baseball like Jackie Robinson's #42 has been broached, and supported by groups such as Hispanics Across America, Jackie Robinson's daughter disagrees, believing that Major League Baseball should honor him another way."

I actually found that last sentence disturbing, and bordering on petty. So it's OK for you father to have this great honor bestowed upon him, but not Roberto, who was every bit as significant to the Latin community? I don't know if I agree with her vague reason, either.

But, maybe it is better that players can honor Roberto by wearing his number as opposed to retiring it league wide.

Hi, I'm new here. I don't have any Pirate GU items but this is my favorite Pirate piece. I will be at PNC in two weeks for the first time. Welcome to the site! That is a great Roberto signed piece you have there. I myself have been to Safeco twice this year, and as bad it was, it doesn't compare to the cliff the Pirates have driven off since last weekend :(.

Wow, you went to your Pirate game nearly when I saw my first! I never made it out to PNC Park, either, and kind of regret not doing so now that I am on the west coast again. Enjoy your trip and make sure to share some pictures!

Thanks Tony I am showing my age but I picked it up for 300.00 in an auction about seven years prior to ebay existing. It was the first baseball item my wife agreed let me buy after we married. I was making 7.25 an hour and going to graduate school so even at 300 it was a major sacrafice. It is one of my favorite pieces for that reason. By the way I still have the wife as well;)

Cool thing; I just found video footage (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ag0moB_TZVw) of Bagwell's second Upper Deck blast. It starts at 0:49 of this feature. You can see the numbers in LF, but not the #9 marker that I own from his first Three Rivers Stadium Upper Deck HR.

That is really neat. I'm was glad to see them win the Giants series as well to hopefully get the ship turned in the right direction. But now it's on to Milwaukee and Miller Park. Yikes!

Does anybody per chance know what the team is going to do with the 1971 throwback uniforms that they wore earlier this season? I have been waiting for them to hit MLB Auctions but to no avail. Are they selling them in the team store instead? Does anybody on this thread have access to the team store? Would be grateful for any answers.

Here is some interesting photographic evidence about the plate. See the #11 in this photo where the #9 originally was? Some tape residue on my Bagwell marker seems to confirm that #11 was put over #9, sometime after the 1994 All-Star Game HR Derby in Pittsburgh. This is all notwithstanding that HR #11 was hit on May 6, 1994 by Glenallen Hill a couple months before the derby. Perhaps the Pirates didn't have the Hill plate made until later in the year. There are also some dents on my Bagwell HR marker that lend evidence to its being hit on the fly - once by Hill and possibly a couple more times in BP. Another interesting tidbit is that the HR distances of #9 and #11 are listed as different, even though ample evidence shows that they hit in the same spot.

#9: Jeff Bagwell - 5/5/91 off Pirates' Bob Kipper (LF) 472'
#11: Glenallen Hill - 5/6/94 off Pirates' Denny Neagle (LF) 457'

I'm was glad to see them win the Giants series as well to hopefully get the ship turned in the right direction. But now it's on to Milwaukee and Miller Park. Yikes!

Well, you hit the nail on the head for this series. Yesterday was a heart-breaker, and a sign that the Buccos have ran out of steam, to me personally :(.

Here's hoping they can at least finish above .500!

Just stuck it in there for pic purposes, Ludwick case should be here monday, Rolen Gamer went right back in it. That was the fastest I ever recieved anything from a MLB Auction, it was sent 2nd day Fed-Ex Signature, wish all MLB teams shipped items out that fast.... Cardinals usually take 3-6 weeks, and there only 25 miles away from me...

I was just kidding about the case :p, awesome you are getting a Ludwick one!

Yeah, Still no notification from MLB for me. Kind of crazy. I know I bought a Seattle Pilots Raul Ibanenz helmet years ago when I lived only 2 hours from Seattle, and had to write MLB after 2 months and ask "where is it?!"

I got it within 3 days after that. Hoping I do not have the same experience this time around with the Pirates.

I've never ever recieved a email stating an MLB Auction item I won has shipped, it just arrives unannounced usually ups signature, or usps signature, the fed-ex signature delivery was a surprise on a saturday, luckily I was at home.:D

Still no jersey, but just wanted to say glad the Pirates seem to be out of their horrible pitching funk, if the last three games are any indication (1-0 lose to Brewers, 2-1 extra inning lose to Brew and 6-2 win over Cards).

Now if they can actually score some runs...

Not relevant, the Cards are NOT going to win the Division, so I would rather see Pittsburgh achieve an above .500 season than St. Louis have a respectable 2nd place finish! And yeah, I know you are a Cards fan .

So, I have now gone essentially one week longer than MLB~NUT, and 2 days longer than hrvatwill, still no uniform . I wrote MLB customer service today and asked what is the deal? I have yet to hear back from them, but there is another auction going on now and I would love to bid, but will not out of principal if these do not arrive by the end of this week. They sure did not hesitate to take my funds after winning...

Don't know why three jerseys/pants end at all at once, and there is such a disparity in shipping times? Trying not to get too upset, but it is annoying.

I will also say NFL auctions have never taken longer than one week to get me the items I have won. And I win ALOT on there!

Shipp 96, here goes one. I found this photo of Willie Stargell from 1980 when the City of Alameda held a parade in his honor. It was Willie Stargell Day and the field at my old high school was dedicated in his name.

The cool thing is an 11 year old ME is in this photo. I am the dark haired kid who's head is directly below the young black girl with the beaded braids in her hair. I had never seen this photo before last night when I found it on Photoshelter.com and I was shocked to see my mug in it. Luckily the photographer has this photo for sale so I am going to buy a copy of it. I plan to frame it with the two "Welcome Home Willie" pin-on's that I kept from that day.

Well, the good news is that my Buccos Cedano throwback uniform FINALLY arrived today, two weeks after the auction. Thank the Lord above my wife was home to sign for it, or it would have been even longer.

Though the uniform is simply awesome, two things irk me from this transaction.

1) MLB "customer service" STILL has not responded to me.

2) The Pirates sent this the day after I emailed them, which makes me wonder had I not sent an email to them, would I still be waiting?

At the end of the day I am thrilled with the purchase. Having the entire throwback uniform is going to be a nice added gem to my collection. But I have to seriously consider future auctions with MLB.

Can't say I'm surprised by the lack of responsiveness to your e-mails going in anonymous directions. They are probably getting to the right person, and being ignored. You do deserve to know who that is, I think.

The Pirates authentics gal does a terrible job and absolutely lacks in professionalism. She's particularly unresponsive, and rather than being apologetic she'll get nasty with you if you note how many times she's been unresponsive or for how long. Again, she is absolutely lacking in professionalism, and seems to dislike her job because she is generally unwilling to try to do a good job.... but here is her contact info:

I am thinking about the Walker, too. Am disappointed that McCutcheon is not available. I may take a flyer on the Alvarez since his value is low now, given the awful season he's having, and his potential still high.

You hit the nail right on the head Shipp_96 and I have to admit I did something very impulsive tonight. Watching the Pirates game and seeing A-Mac hit two dingers got me all fired up about the jersey and so I went online and keep submitting bids until I became the high bidder. Thanks for the site, MLB~NUT, I appreciate the info! I also see you got the Ludwick ALREADY?!? You have the magic address, my friend :)!

Good luck on the 'Cutch bat. I am not a bat person, myself. I have wayyy to many other game worn items I concentrate on (cleats, jerseys, helmets) to open Pandora's Box on bats. But the base may be a possibility .

No Shipp, haven't gotten it yet just won it wednsday same day as last time, now if it comes tomm. Saturday-that'll be same amount of days as last time, but we'll see. I'll tel yah how long it takes this time came by fed-ex signature delivery last time from the Pirates in only 3 days!!!

I have no clue, but it seems like the going rate on MLB.com. There was a stocking earlier this year with the following items signed by 'Cutch'. A bobble-head, an MLB baseball, 8x10, bat and t-shirt...non were game used. Went for $325!

FYI Pirates collectors-

The Andrew McCutchen jersey in MLB auctions was NOT worn by him. It's a retail jersey that is signed. It's currently at $351 which is pretty high for a signed jersey so hopefully nobody is bidding thinking it's worn during BP in the All Star Game.

I was able to tell based on this photo:

Just curious if anyone is bidding on the Clemente Day throwback worn hats on MLB.com? I bid $150 on the 'Cutch and have since been outbid. That's about my limit for a hat.

I did have a question however pertaining to those. I know they wore those against the O's, but did they wear them at any other time this season? The reason I ask is they have a Derrick Lee and Ludwick worn caps, and they were not acquired until after that game. Again, unless they are from another day.

Any additional info would be appreciated. Thank you!

This response is way late, but I got the Alex Presley hat from that game.

And now a question for all Pirates fans out there. Does anybody have any 1970-1976 double knits? I have a home one from 1972 that was also worn in 1973, but I am looking for anybody who has away jerseys from that era so that I can ask them questions about the tagging. Please let me know!

Hey mrozie,
Love the vintage Pirates collection, especially the 70's stuff! The two vintage flannels look great. Just love the 1938 as I used to oogle the one in Frankie Gustine's restaurant on Cardiac Hill when I was a kid. It was his game worn one from the same year, so to get one just like it is a big thrill for me, especially since it shared the same dugout as the Waner brothers, Traynor, Wagner, etc. Sorry you were the underbidder, but I just had to have it and the 1946 one.

Thanks that is perfect. Someday I hope to add a 70's road to my collection. Congrats again.

That 'Cutch helmet is freakin awesome!

Sorry Shipp, I just saw this. Thanks, I'm going to post some of the photomatches that I found on this thread. I can almost match the helmet to any photo of him I see from 2012. The gift that keeps on giving!!!

Wow Will another great pickup! Thank goodness you don't like hockey, there would be nothing left for me! Though I guess you are helping me save money!!!

Here's a Hebner "Pie Traynor" 1968 home flannel....there was another "Pie Traynor" flannel on ebay last week though the letters and numbers weren't original.
