This picture was just listed on eBay through the Topps Vault. It shows Padres all-star catcher Benito Santiago wearing a uniform style he supposedly never wore! By the time he was called up by the Padres in late 1986, they had already ditched the yellow color and were using their brown and white uniforms. This pic was apparently taken during spring training in 1984, and is kinda cool if you're a uniform nerd!!! :D

I remember actually owning a 1984 Padres road unused gamer of Ozzie Guillen (he was swapped to the White Sox over the 1984-85 offseason). He was issued #9 with the Pads.

Random pop culture reference. The late Mitch Hedberg used to talk about items on Tv having "4 easy payments" "I'd like to have a product with three easy payments and one really difficult payment. Final payment must be made in Wampum"

It's much funnier now that I'll be thinking of having to pay in a batting practice A's jersey.....

jer

Nope, it's a game jersey, alright. BP jerseys, with rare exceptions, didn't exist until 1979. This is a McAuliffe gamer. The "WAMPUM" NOB was a nod to Allen's hometwon (Wampum PA).

Two cards in the 1966 Topps set of pitchers readily identified with one team (Mahaffey=Phillies and Friend=Pirates) in spring training photos in their new team's threads. Each one threw in a total of 12 games for their new '66 squads...the only difference was Mahaffey retiring after his late-June release, while Friend hiked across the Big Apple to pitch for the Mets for the remainder of the season after the Yankees cut him loose.

Here's a typical example of two players on the same team wearing different styles of jerseys on field at the same time. Until the early 1980s, these font variations happened more often than many people realize.

No, not a batting practice jersey; they didn't have BP jerseys back then and the players just wore their regular uniforms for BP. However, the A's under Finley did go through a period where they allowed players to put either a nickname, first name or a nickname on their jerseys. I believe Vida Blue had "Vida" on some of his jerseys, and "Blue" on others.

Bert Campaneris wearing an Oakland Rangers uniform.

Sorry but your photos don't carry through when your posts are quoted. However that is an interesting airbrush on the Bert Campaneris card - they got the cap and the top part of the jersey, but you can see he is wearing a green A's jersey in the real photo.

Check out Mike Ditka wearing this old helmet! I'm pretty sure this style of helmet was outdated by Ditka's rookie season of 1961.

Because Halas was involved with Wilson Sporting Goods a lot of Bears players wore Wilson helmets. Wilson's late 50s/early 60s helmets (MacGregor did this as well) were pretty much the same shape as their old leather helmets but with plastic shells. I've seen photos of Ditka's early years with the Bears and he is wearing that style helmet (but of course with at least a 1-bar facemask).

Back then you also saw a lot of player head shot photos done with helmets without facemasks just to show the player's face. I believe this Ditka photo is one of those.

I agree, players would pose for magazine photos wearing maskless helmets even through the mid-1970s. With that being said, I believe I found a photo of Ditka from his rookie season of 1961. Even without the facemask, the helmet he's wearing seems to be a newer Wilson model.

Good catch - I hadn't seen a good photo from Ditka's rookie year in a while and thought it was the same style. I suppose the one in the Ditka "head shot" was just one they probably kept just as a photo shoot prop - it was likely never worn on-field and they probably kept it (or them if they had a few sizes) around for several years in a box for players to put on for their "glamour shot".

Found this from the New York Times.

As the manager of a team that won only 77 games last season, John McNamara of the Cleveland Indians has been on the lookout for some extra offensive punch this year. Now he thinks he has just the man to provide it: Rod Carew. No, Carew, who played 19 seasons with the Minnesota Twins and the California Angels and batted .328, isn't coming out of retirement. He has been hired by the Indians to teach some young Cleveland players one of his specialties: stealing home. "It's going to be one of our secret weapons," said McNamara.

Now I think the king of unexpected uniforms would be the good ole Babe. Now we all know he started off as a Red Sox, but not for nothing it just seemed like he was always a Yankee. So to don a Braves uniform and Brooklyn Dodgers Uniform seemed a bit strange.

Early 60s Raiders vs. 49ers. I think that's Hugh Mcelhenny on the far left. Who recognizes someone? No players identified in the photo. That seems like that's the Raiders inaugural style. 1960, no?

Wow, I needed to do a double-take. Is it me, or does that pic of Drew Henson look an awful lot like Doug Flutie? And he's wearing #7, and if you look at the sig, it even looks like "Doug Flutie"

Check out Sid Fernandez... Though his uniform is not "unexpected", his #10 surely is!

Here's a picture of Pete Rose wearing the 1979 Phillies "Saturday Night" uniform. I believe that the Phils wore these uniforms in only one 1979 game. I am sorry if someone else has already posted this picture.

Here are a couple pics of Pete Rose from before his 1963 rookie year. In Fall 1961 Pete played in the Florida Instructional League between October 15th and December 13th. In Spring 1962 he worked out with the Reds in spring training. In Fall 1962 he played in the Florida Instructional League between October 13th and December 14th.

The above is a 1990 White Sox home Rawlings BP jersey MJ wore for a publicized pregame BP session before a White Sox home game. Sorry to use 2 posts; the intial post wouldn't accept additional text after the photo.

Take a good look at this.... Makes you wonder if Griffey's uniform number was somehow trademarked?

These photos were taken during Spring Training 1972, according to Topps. Interesting jersey, appears to be the last stand for flannels.
