View Full Version : How do you Display your collection?

I was wondering how many of you display your collection. I am now beginning to get quite a few items and was wondering how some of you do it. I am going to ikea this weekend to get one of those glass display cabinets that are 50$ to put my game used helmets in. They have 4 shelves in it. Only thing i worry about is they are not UV glass but i plan to down the road get gases for the helmets and put them in there then the case. The jerseys i plan to make a little closet type thing for and put them on hangers and possibly in suit bags to keep them protected. So what do you do with all your stuff? Display it? Keep it in containers completely away from everything and safe? Would love to hear. Maybe some others can get ideas as well.

We don't need no stinking UV glass!
Plaster the walls, use up all your floor space. Set up a velvet rope at the door.
Good to go.

you don't think UV glass would be needed to stop the fading on the helmets? i mean i doubt anything on them would fade but i don't wanna chnce it. I love your set up.

Guess it depends how much light you have. The only light source in my room is 4 of those little ceiling fan bulbs and the computer screen. The window has blinds and a curtain over that.

In my lifetime, I doubt I'll notice any fading. More concerned about a tornado ripping off the upper level of the house.

i don't get a ton of light but i worry about it. i know its prob nuttin but i do have shades and a curtain as well. I will prob just get the shelves and pick the cases up if i see it start.

I can't get enough of that Dr. J collection.

As for me, I built lockers (basically a series of closets) in my basement with carsiding and 2x4s. Looks good and was relatively cheap to do.

No UV glass here, just a good shade over the window that doesn't let direct sunlight in, just enough to see the goods.

Is there any way to make existing glass UV protected?

I have an ikea cabinet right next to my window which lets in lots of sunlight through the cheap blinds:

We are planning on replacing the blinds for curtains but this could be 2-3 years away...The rest of my memorabilia is on a wall opposite the blinds as well. I never open them, but they do a poor job of darkening the room.

I have an unfinished basement - and again cannot remember the 'originator' of the idea here - maybe TripleXXX? - I know it was one of the football guys... anyway...

Unfinished basement, $25 Black 5 Shelf Wal-Mart Bookcases, Mannequins and a few Oakley cases I've picked up over the years (Oh yeah, and a large carpet remnant) and I have this:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v738/xpress34/Basement/DSC04960.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v738/xpress34/Basement/DSC04982.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v738/xpress34/Basement/DSC04961.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v738/xpress34/Basement/DSC04969.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v738/xpress34/Basement/DSC04970.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v738/xpress34/Basement/DSC04971.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v738/xpress34/Basement/DSC04983.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v738/xpress34/Basement/DSC04972.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v738/xpress34/Basement/DSC04974.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v738/xpress34/Basement/DSC04965.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v738/xpress34/Basement/BasementWide6.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v738/xpress34/Basement/DSC04964.jpg

Some of the pics are old and some items are gone or replaced with new stuff - I need to take new pics - but you get the idea.

As far as light - as I said, basement - one window and it's covered with a dark blanket with a table in front of it (where I take photos of balls, bats, jerseys, etc). All incandescent bulbs have been replaced with CFLs and I am ungrading (as I can afford it) to LED bulbs (no UV light emitted!).

Hope you enjoy!!!

P.S. - Here's the Giambi Uni now:

Man, that display is wicked! I'm hoping when I move into my new house to make a few lockers too but man, your display is HOF worthy. Did you build those or buy them? It looks really professional, I am mad jealous. At least I now have something to aspire to.

Mulligans, your office is nicer than most places I have lived (LOL)...great setup you have there! Wow, my office at work looked like a broom closet compared to that Taj Mahal.

Jake51, you simply have an awesome collection! Do you mind if I ask where you get the half mannequins? They are the way to display GU jerseys!

This was my humble setup in our guest room. Many of the signed helmets (full size Raiders, 2nd Steelers full size) have been sold and replaced with a game worn Raiders helmet and Steelers game worn cleats and gloves I have shown on other threads.

Thanks...I like your stuff as well, very cool!

I get everything from a local place here in Denver but they do ship around the country. www.manne-king.com (http://www.manne-king.com) There is a guy there by the name of Joe who is a huge help.

I have a room where I placed slat wall on three of the four walls and covered the windows with the slat wall. Slat wall, of course, is what you find in stores to display their merchandise. Works great for memorabilia. I then bought jersey hangers from ultra mount to hang the uniforms, hat holders to display caps and helmets and plastic shelves for gloves, batting gloves, tickets, balls, etc. There are numerous companies that sell slat wall display items that you can use. I buy stuff from Robert Hamm. I then shut the door to the room, which allows it to stay dark while I am not in the room. I would not display any autograph in a room that receives a lot of light from outside or light fixtures. You can also buy great bat display racks that hold a lot of bats from Cooperstown Bat Co.

Right now I have a 9 bat and 30 ball display cases from CaseWorks (http://www.caseworksfactorystore.com/). In my opinion it is the "classiest" displays I have found. They do not look cheap or take away from the items.

The nice thing is that you can also get museum quality UV protection. I am surprised some people are not concerned about UV fading their signatures or items. Just because there is no windows in a display room does not mean they wont fade. Even those compact florescent bulbs give off UV.

I will post actual pictures when renos are done.

The nice thing about the Ball display is that you can see the ball from all angles, you don't have to be straight on to see them all.

Hey Joba,

My favorite as a young football player were an aging Franco Harris, and an up and coming Curt (not Kurt) Warner from Penn State. Ironically, it was Warner's injury that made for Franco's awkward stay his last season in Seattle. Yeah they are awesome. Do you know if they are CREE LED? or are they Phillips? The CREE are much better and brighter. CREE are pretty much the top dog when it comes to LED, Phillips being the larger company tho has the edge.

Anyone looking to buy / use LED's should really consider making the investment into CREE LED's

My last sports room before my move. Dedicated to history of THE University of Minnesota Gophers football team. Part of my Gopher football collection is displayed along w/ my Big Ten, small Minnesota colleges, Minnesota high school helmets, and a few others. I build the entire room myself out of 4 bare basement walls. The "helmet room" has the 20 yard line from Jack Trice Stadium (Iowa State). Enjoy the pics.

Great Gopher collection! I plan on making it the Husker/Gopher game next year as Nebraska enters the big ten. Have to ask who's Husker helmet do you have in your collection in the photo?

Awesome stuff, thanks for sharing.

Incredible, what an amazing job! Very nicely done. My helmets approximately 30 to 40 are in my office on shelves - mostly ACC and SEC gamers.

Thank you Shawn for sharing.

I have to say I don't recall. It's one of the helmets I sold when I moved. I do remember it being one of the nicer modern Husker helmets I've seen. I'm to make it back for the Huskers game and am looking forward to the new rivalry.

Beautifully displayed collection! I have been to your Gridiron Heroes site, anytime you want to work out a price for that Seahawks Engram (I collect Penn State players, much as you collect UM Gophers), feel free to contact me at ttorina23@excite.com

Again, that was one nice display area.

Thanks for all the comments on my old sports room. I am currently working on a website for my/our collection. I've been collecting w/ my best friend for 25 years and his younger brother started adding to it about 18 years ago. It's really a co-op of sorts and we consider our collection combined. I moved to a beach condo in St. Pete Beach last year so most of my collection is being stored at my friend's home. Pics included (a minute portion of his collection which dwarfs my own) of just his name player jerseys and few of his helmets.

The base of the website is set up, but we're working on a complete history of the modern Gopher football football uniform and trying to update our photo data base. We have well over 1500 Gopher jerseys and around 200 Gopher helmets so only the "name" players will be on the site along with our historically significant pieces. The website is about 5 to 6 months till completion.

In response to the Riddle jersey. I sold off my few hockey and basketball jerseys to focus on football. I didn't have a Riddle, but I know one of my friends has one. I don't believe he's looking to sell, but if you want to send me an offer I'll forward it to him. They have around 2 dozen hockey jerseys combined w/ numerous frozen four jerseys.

Thanks Again and Go Gophers!

GRIDIRON-Thanks for the response about the troy riddle jersey. But i was not asking if you had one for sale.As my brother has a almost every jersey of troys already including his high school jersey. The only one that he doesnt have yet is when troy played over in austria last season. He has his german jersey from the year before but not the austria one.He even has troys stick that he used in the ncaa championship when they won the national championship.I was just wondering what jerseys you had there. And you cant really see them when they are on a clothes rack like that. And in the one photo i saw a hockey helmet.I was not looking to buy, just wondering what you had.As gophers hockey are the toughest to get as the "u" stopped selling them at there annual garage sale.We go every year and always see tons of football and other sports. So those are not tough to get.I wish hockey was as easy. All me and my brother can assume is that the equipment manager must have a great basement of items.Well anyways, sorry for the misunderstanding. My brother is friends with troy so he has a direct line to his items. But thanks:)

I had the seller make me two 12, one 10, one 6 racks. I had him stain them as close to black as possible. He did an excellent job. Hope that helps

Dang nice display rooms. All of my stuff sits in boxes, leans against walls, or is stuffed in closets.

I am out of room, so for now my garage is where they sit. My jerseys are hanging in my closet. I need a bigger house.

Shawn,
AWESOME room and collection. I emailed you as well, but if you ever decide to part with the Jack Trice turf please let me know. I am VERY interested and have been looking for a piece for a LONG TIME. Also, will your collection be on the gridironheroes website or a separate one. I would like to link it on my own (www.cyclonejerseys.com). Thanks.
