Always amazing what Winter Classic game used stuff brings in. Jerseys end tonight and it's a close battle right now on who sells for more. Crosby vs. Ovechkin. Also being 1st period jerseys both Rupp and Erskine fight worn jerseys are included. I think Crosby Buffalo Winter Classic game used jersey went for 75K. I doubt this one will come close to that. Some of the goal pucks are getting nice action.
Here link to them.

I don't have all the facts but going on what I know of previous WC and All Star games, I believe there are 5 sets of each jersey, (1st period, 2nd period, 3rd period, warm up and photo/backup) MeiGray had a set of period jerseys. They usually let the players keep the 3rd period jersey. The warmup set and the photo set usually show up in promotion and/or used in other team related auctions.

In my humble opinion, far and away the most skewed jersey prices for every player happen on the league websites for these types of auctions. I have, for years, dreamed of selling my stuff through NHL.com or NFL.com as people for some reason will pay upwards of 3 times as much for the same jersey when it's on those websites.

To wit, Sami Salo's Garth Brooks Patched and Katrina Patched jerseys, each worn in only 1 game, both sold for over $500 each. At that time, MeiGray had his jerseys priced at $295, and those were worn for 20 games each! (Sadly, I did not have the same disease for his jerseys then that I do now as I'd be happy to take them off someones hands)

There are 5 Oven-chickens on MeiGrays website right now. they range from $7995 to $12,500. There is an Opening Night jersey from his second season, a White Eagle Alternate (One of only 12 he ever wore in this style) his first jersey with an "A" and this years jersey with a "C" , a red one from this season. Each was worn in several games. (I may be misreading the opening night jersey, that could be a one game wonder) That being said, a jersey worn for 1 period, in the rain, is selling for much more than any of those. In fact, you could buy 2 of his jerseys for $15990, through MeiGray right now and get a photomatched red jersey worn in 13 regular season games and a white photomatched worn in 25 games plus the preseason! That's like half of a season of usage combined versus 1 stupid period!?!

I have heard tell hockey collectors who deal with vintage jerseys and have seen the Caps jerseys from the Winter Classic and felt they cheaped out on the logo too. MeiGray had a set of them as well and I believe (though Barry could chime in here) sold them out for much less than what these are going for.

Bottom line, everyone is encouraged and free to collect whatever makes them happy. I am all for diversity and maybe, like me, the person with a high bid of almost $16,000 is a player collector and is missing this style for his set of Ovechkin jerseys. Perhaps it's Alex himself and wants to own the whole set of shirts he wore during the game.

I just fear that just maybe, it's someone who doesn't know any better and thinks this jersey is worth $16,000 on the open market when, obviously, it's not. (See example above)

What about you, my fellow collectors? If you are a player collector and your guys played in the WC in a one time style, would you horribly overpay for it, of wait for the secondary market? If Salo played in the Vancouver Millionaires jersey (which is rumored to happen) I'd cap my bid at the going MeiGray rate for one of his regular season jerseys. It's what I did for the jersey he wore for Trevor Linden's retirement and that was also worn for like 12 other games plus preseason.

These auctions just show how die hard some hockey collectors are and how popular Winter Classic game is. People want a piece of the game. While other jerseys may become avaliable from the game, these are the only ones you know for sure will be auctioned for everyone.
Is a really nice bonus for Penguins collectors to get a chance at a MeiGray authenticated Pens gamer as well. As they are not a team that use MeiGray for their normal gamers.
Always surprised what people shell out for the game issued ones. The goal pucks went for some nice prices.

Hi everybody,

I'd like to correct a few pieces of information here, without diving into the interesting discussion.

Crosby's 2008 Winter Classic jersey sold by NHL-MeiGray Game-Worn Authentiction Program via NHL Auctions for $45,000.

And the teams wear four sets of jerseys in the Winter Classic:
Photo shoot day before game/Warmup before game--Goes to NHLPA
1st Per.--To NHL, for NHL-MGG Auth. Program Auction on NHL Auctions
2nd Per.--To participating teams. Caps set marketed by MGG, as per the Caps-MGG Game-Worn Jersey Program
3rd Per.--To each individual player.

Hope this clarifies,

Barry

Oh, one more thing ... the 2nd period set of Caps jerseys we sold via retail sale prior to the game sold for close to what the auction went. Obviously some went higher, some went lower. But the bottom line on the sets were comparable.
