I've never seen auctions like these before. Should we be happy to see them (for jersey restoration on jerseys that need it) or should we be concerned that they could be sewn onto jerseys that aren't even legitimate?

Looks like this could lead to nothing but trouble if you ask me.

Perhaps they could sell them to card companies who can market them as "Game Used Jersey Tags? Can't be any worse then the cut up 1/4 inch piece of double knit jersey fabric.

I just saw these tonight, and it's a travesty if you ask me...

What's to stop someone from buying any of these and then applying them to a retail authentic jersey of the same era? Set tags, team issue wash tags, even strip tags... someone that can sew can have a field day with this stuff... at our expense!

I too find the statement that "proper tags can add hundreds to the value of your jersey" mind boggling...

I would like to put microchips in them and follow where they go. I hope somebody can keep an eye on this...

Somehow I don't see these ending up as part of someone's jersey tag collection! Nothing good can come from this.

I sent the seller an e-mail asking him if he is advocating fraud. I'll post his response, if I get one.

His reply:

No, restoring anything, means locating the right authentic pieces, whenever possible, over the past 40 years I've seen numerous jerseys, missing tags, #s, patches ect., the value would of been enhanced if the items had not been missing parts. I would want and expect any restored jersey to mention the fact. Dealing with classic cars, I have driven over 1000 miles to find a correct part, such as a fender or door. I hope this explanation helps, on the other hand, things I've seen in my many years of collecting game used items would shock most collectors, there is a website, hauls of shame, I believe, you should check it out.

I like how he used the classic car comparison. Offering tags for jerseys is about par to someone looking to buy a 1963 Vette tittle and emblem to add with their 1974 Pinto..... crazy!
