ESPN The Magazine Declares SF Giants’ Buster Posey as its NEXT Athlete

2011 NEXT Class: Thrashers wing Evander Kane, Clippers forward Blake Griffin and LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE (http://www.businesswire.com/))--After much deliberation, ESPN The Magazine has found the athlete destined to make the biggest impact on sports in the coming year…and for years to come. Hitting .305 and blasting 18 homers—as well as handling baseball’s best pitching staff—San Francisco Giants catcher and NL Rookie of the Year Buster Posey (http://cts.businesswire.com/ct/CT?id=smartlink&url=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.espn.go.com%2Fbuster-posey%2F&esheet=6557968&lan=en-US&anchor=Buster+Posey&index=1&md5=3c4c0dec1ceff4eecca66d96337533f4) is The Mag’s NEXT athlete. Along with Posey, Thrashers wing Evander Kane (http://cts.businesswire.com/ct/CT?id=smartlink&url=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.espn.go.com%2Fevander-kane%2F&esheet=6557968&lan=en-US&anchor=Evander+Kane&index=2&md5=b5c58c75a9ca1418ed1d1008deaf2437), Clippers forward Blake Griffin (http://cts.businesswire.com/ct/CT?id=smartlink&url=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.espn.go.com%2Fblake-griffin%2F&esheet=6557968&lan=en-US&anchor=Blake+Griffin&index=3&md5=a5108074d948a1570e5afd02a160319d) and LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson (http://cts.businesswire.com/ct/CT?id=smartlink&url=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.espn.go.com%2Fpatrick-peterson%2F&esheet=6557968&lan=en-US&anchor=Patrick+Peterson&index=4&md5=cfcabc11ab5f9afe0804bec75add3666) were all chosen as NEXT in their respective sport.

It's hard to say what kind of impact he'll have.

He plays in AT&T park so his power numbers
will be impacted.

He's 23 and plays catcher so it's likely his career
won't go beyond 15 years. That may not be enough time
to put up HOF numbers.

If he is moved to OF/1B his 30-35 hrs 100-130 RBI .300+ ba
will be more marginal at those positions.

The Giants will likely spend their money on Cain/Lincecum
and piece together a lineup around Buster with
the Huffs, Burrells, Tejadas of the world which is
going to have mixed results in the coming years. The
Giants are banking on Panda and Belt breaking
out which is a big gamble.

If you're buying Posey stuff right now you're buying
at the top. It's 80-90% hype/giants fandom and 10-20% investment value.

On some items HOF prices are being paid, which is pricing
this guy at perfection right now.

Too bad I didn't listen to my own advice. I bought a Posey item through the Giants and probably overpaid, though at least I can lay claim to having a piece of history.

Wouldn't call the cover of a magazine an award. Still haven't completely figured out the whole east coast bias thing that you and a couple other posters continue to harp on. While I don't always agree with what/how espn covers things, I tend to think they put their coverage time into which teams/ players are successful or newsworthy. Of the cities you named, Boston has won championships in 3 different sports in the last 10 years with the red sox winning 2, patriots winning 3 and appearing in 4 super bowls, the celtics winning once and appearing in another final. the Yankees are the most popular team in MLB and have been perennial contenders for the last 10 to 15 years. Philadelphia has also had very successful teams lately. Why wouldn't espn put time into covering these teams- all have rapid fan bases and win...
When the red sox fell out of contention this year I didn't see a lot of time spent on them.
Take the Tampa bay rays for example- fans in their own city dont go to the games or appear overly interested- why would a national sports channel feature them on broadcasts or features?

Truth is we just don't know. He could be a top five player, or he could fizzle out. The question is how much people are willing to pay for his game worn items at this point in time. I have long past given up buying expensive game-used pieces of first year players. Too risky.

Not to steer off topic to much, but heyward for example. People were buying his bats for $1500 from the braves once they sent out their first gu mailer. Their last one they were selling them for like $700. They will just keep going down when people realize heyward and other players arent going to be the next Griffey or whatever.

In order for prices for his items to stay
anywhere near current levels, he will need
to outdo what he did last year, which may
be a tall order. Combine that with 2011 pieces
coming onto the market and there will be significant
downward pressure on prices.

For prices to stay at current levels he may
need to be a top 5 MLB player in 2011 indeed.

The Giants's lineup is so mediocre that
if he is indeed a superstar he'll be pitched around
like Bonds.

It seems like everyone is punching his
HOF ballot right now.

ESPN is just trying to boost its MLB ratings.
