When did the year production date start in 2009? Was it installed during spring training or was it once the season began?

Looking for a Jay Bruce signature model 2008 bat, and want to make sure it is safe to say that any bat without a production year of 2009 is from 2008 or could there be spring training bats or early bats that were used in 2009 without the year code?
