All,

Both myself and Steve at Kruk Cards have been puzzling over a jersey for the past few days and I thought I'd open up the discussion to a wider audience, possibly to help us solve this mystery.

This past week, Steve listed an apparent Cincinnati Reds gamer -- it was a home jersey featuring the name and number "Howington" and "30"... it had 2001 year tagging. Since this point, questions have arisen on the jersey, and he has done the right thing by taking down the auction until more is known. A link to the listing is as follows:

Ty Howington was one of the top prospects in the Reds organization from 1999 to 2003. No doubt in my mind he was invited to at least one of their Spring Trainings during this span; however, he never made it to the big leagues. If a jersey of his was to be furnished by the Reds organization, it would be a Spring Training jersey... but the big problem here is that #30 could not possibly have been given to him, as it belonged to Ken Griffey Jr. from 2000 to 2005 (1999 was not an option because the jersey is tagged as a 2001). Could anyone here offer a reasonable explanation for this jersey? I'm stumped.

Thanks
Nick

Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't believe I have ever seen the Reds wear real jerseys in spring training. Maybe there were exceptions back in the day, but I have not seen it.

One theory is it was made up for him for baseball cards/photo days/ appearances at Reds events. Sometimes these (and my example) do not show the number, but for somebody that was not near the major league level right away they possibly chose to give him whatever number they would like.

Did not dig deep into photos just a quick google search...

Funny this should come up. I've been watching their DeWayne Wise White Sox jersey. In looking around for photo matches, I can't find a game match, but I believe it is a match for the "photo day" pictures on Getty (dated Feb, beginning of Spring Training?). I wouldn't be surprised to find out that some of these photo day jerseys have strange numbers and then end up on the market as game-used/issued.
