I'm working on my new display room....had to move out of the bigger room I was in because my 4YO needs a bigger room so I'm downsizing....I'll show more pics of the room when I get it done. Here's one corner of the room so far. I have stuff piled up everywhere so I might be hitting ebay with all of the stuff that's not pre 1970.

Hi Dan-

Believe it or not my memorabilia room no longer exists...it is completely empty. Everything seen on my website is gone. Well actually its all packed away in about 25 boxes. I too am moving rooms. What took me years to assemble, took me weeks to pack up safetly. I'm almost done remodeling the new room, and in about a week (I hope) I'll begin displaying items again and will have some new pics. The room will be different then past, with only a fraction of what I had out before on display. Everything will be ordered by sport and item (i.e. 20 bats will be on racks as opposed to the 60 bats I had scattered about).

I've been working out of the basement for the past month and it drives me crazy sittting next to all the boxes so I set up some temporary displays to keep me from going through withdrawl. Here are some pics of the temp displays but these are not the new room..just an interim stage.

Say it aint so Joe! I know this process is killing you, but you will be fine. You may appreciate your collection more when you have to choose the best of the best. I went through that process with my gloves five years ago. I was up to 120, but only had room for 30. I sold what didn't make the cut which financed other areas that were lacking at the time. Now when I purchase a new glove it either knocks another off the walls, or it is sold. Your new room will also force the "will it fit?" debate before you make new purchases. I have passed up quite a few items I would have jumped on before, simply because they wouldn't make the cut or probably wouldn't generate enough money from resale to justify the purchase. I do have a few crates of extra items of quality in the basement for making substitutions from time to time. You should build a bat rack like those in my office. That is an area of my collection I havn't cut much. Besides, that three feet from the ground isn't good for much else, and you can set other peices on top of the racks. They aren't difficult to build with a few power tools. Let me know if you want construction tips.

Maybe you should add a for sale room to your web site. Now, since it was my idea, I should get first dibs. Are we all in agreement on that? Thaaats what I thought you would say.

Thanks for sharing guys.....This is what I like to see. Joe I notice the Dodger Cola bottle you have in your display case. I have one of those in my display room also. I also like your mixed bag of sports memorabilia. I only have baseball stuff, but I love the look of those old basketballs and football helmets. Now with less room to display items I don't think I'll be making the move to other sports.

At least Jim didn't show any Johnny Damon photographs in his room <G>.

Just starting out collecting early Red Sox (pre-1920), I haven't much to show as mostly everything is in one display case. The only other stuff worth mentioning is a base from Schilling's game 2 at Fenway and a 1904 composite. As the original post asked for pics of display rooms, thought I would show my other room. Although there's only a couple of Sox things in here, it's all about beer in Rhode Island. Thought you might like to see it even if it's not entirely sports related.

My basement in Atlanta has an Orioles vibe, yet there's always room for a nod to good ol' Gansett. My favorite items came from Cal himself...the warm-up jacket and autographed bat as well as the picture of him shaking his dad's hand rounding third. The inscription reads, "A good baseball moment, but a great father-son moment!"

Thanks Mike H. The Beer collection started, scarey to say, when I was 15....almost thirty years ago. Like that great Cal Ripken autographed photo also posted, it's been a father and son adventure for all of those years and that room is full of treasured memories. Most, if not all, of what you are looking at is from 1895-1939 or so. If you look close, on the back wall there's a late 1940s or early 50s Red Sox Licence plate that was put out by the Narragansett Brewing Company. We were also very fortunate to pick up from a friend a great 1916 celluloid schedule for the Sox, Braves and Providence Greys put out by Narragansett and a few other things put out by the brewery in the 50s when Curt Gowdey was doing the announcing for the Sox.

Speaking of Gansett.......where on earth did an Orioles collector from Atlanta find a Gansett sign??? Way cool (and impeccable taste mind you <G>). That sign dates from the mid fifties. You need to get yourself a National Bohemian sign from Baltimore!!! Very nice room!! Spent a weekend last year at Camden Yards, can't wait to go back.

Love seeing of these pics. I hope others continue to post. It's one thing to collect and appreciate nice items, when you see a collection put together, it gives it more of a human element......much more important than just a page on ebay!!

I'm a native of Rhody and carry a torch for the nostalgia of my youth. That sign is actually a cityscape that I had commisioned and the billboard was hand drawn. Its the side of a tenement building ...there's a man in the window and the lights of the billboard actually light up. Reminds me of the old downtrodden Gemini Hotel that I used to pass every day when I went to Classical.
Soft spot for Gansett and the Reds...I actually have a turn back the clock Reds jersey on Ebay as we speak...Jim

Jim,

Fantastic to hear from another Rhodey!! Now that I look at that Gansett sign more closely, I can see that it's a billboard attached to the side of a building....extremely nice!! I'll have to show that one to my dad. Where did you get it?

You hit another nerve when you mention the Reds. I have some wonderful memories of them going to games with my dad at the old Rhode Island Arena with the old chicken wire and full of smoke so thick you couldn't breathe.

Keep in touch and have a great holiday!!

Here is my home office. This is more of a working space as opposed to a show room. You will see my collection is comprised mainly of Pirates World Series players game used bats. I used to collect every Pirates bat under the sun but I have decided to whittle it down to one LVS and One Adirondack from every player on the 1960, 1971 and 1979 Buccos championship teams.

The goal is to ultimately have only the correct era bats as well. It is a work in progress. The bats get harder to find, more expensive to buy but more exciting to add to the wall!

You will also see a few large, signed canvas prints on the one wall. I am in the printing industry and I created these for my own pleasure (and got them signed). I gladly trade these canvas prints to other collectors in exchange for other collectibles.
Happy collecting!

Gentlemen,
Thanks for the replies. The method that I use to display my bats (and other collectibles) is with slatwall.Slatwall is typically ordered in 4'x8' sheets and can be installed just as you would any other wooden sheet materials. Slatwall cimes standard in a 3" on center configuration. This is ideal for mazimizing you bat spacing AND allowing you display the bats in a horizontal fashion that makes for easier viewing and better for showcasing your gems.

The slatwall is very versatile. It comes in solid woods, wood veneers or colored formicas etc. The "grooves" can be painted or stained an accent color (from the factory) or you can also have snazzy metal inserts in the grooves. In addition there are a multitude of hanging hooks and other hardware that make your displays total modular and quickly changeable. You can convert a wall from 100 bats to 20 helmets, 10 footballs and 5 jerseys in no time.
What really looks slick is if you couple the slatwall with glass doors (with a depth to accomodate your collectibles). You get a museum like look with minimal expense.

If interested I can get more info on how and where to get slatwall and hardware.

Thanks,
Marty

I WOULD LIKE TO SAY TO ALL THE MEMBERS HERE YOU HAVE SOME GREAT SHOWROOMS FOR YOUR ITEMS AND THANK YOU FOR POSTING PICS AS I AM SURE IT GIVES ME AND OTHER MEMBERS HERE SOME IDEAS. MY HATS OFF TO YOU GUYS!!!

I have not started my display area yet but I plan too and once I do I will post pics of it here.

One of the things I want to do is kind of give a bit of a museum quality feel to my display room and what I have been thinking of doing is buying the glass show cases with the glass shelves that you see in stores and incorporate that into my display room. Just an idea in case anyone else is interested in doing something similar. (HAVE NOT PRICED THEM YET) so of course I will see if its worth doing!!!

Suave,
You can find some nice 5-6ft upright cases with glass doors and shelves in used condition anywhere from $500-600 range from my experiences. New ones will cost $1000 on up. They are worth every penny in my opinion. I bought all of mine used at Antique markets and they look great.

slide,
what i did was go to home depot, bought some 1x4 oak slats and cut to accomodate 6 bats evenly spaced. the hooks are utility hooks for hanging brooms, garden tools, etc, also bought there. drilled holes evenly spaced, painted it black to match my theme and screwed in the hooks and that's it. i think the hooks were .79 each and the oak slat $2-$3. so for about $10 you can make a nice rack.

I've enjoyed seeing contributions to this thread since it got started...this is what our hobby is all about! We moved to a new home a few months ago, and I finally finished my "sports room" this week. I went with the slatwall/tempered glass solution mentioned in another thread. One suggestion for all of you - look in your local phone book for "Store Fixtures". Almost every major city has at least one store that carries clothing racks, hangers, display cases, etc. all intended for retail. They usually also rent out the large glass display cases (think jewelry/watch cases from department stores) for conventions, trade shows and other similar events. Many of these stores also carry 'used' store fixtures that you can get at great prices. I saw one case that would be great for autographed hockey pucks, although it was really a doughnut case.

These stores are also great sources for inexpensive slatwall and related hardware, and even mannequins or body forms for jerseys. I have purchased a clothing rack for my jerseys, called a "29 ball spiral" which doesn't take a lot of space and only cost $25.

My point is that you can find some great display cases and related items for good prices. Especially on the used stuff, they always seem willing to negotiate on price - one warning, the places that sell these items are usually very chaotic looking and may not appear to be organized - you may have to do a little digging through some boxes of wood hangers to find the 'best' condition ones, etc.

Enjoy, and let me know if any of you are successful!

Nate, Hi. In reference to my Red Sox jerseys, I guess the best jersey in the collection is the jersey from 1975. It is all-original and was worn by Johnny Pesky. The rest are jerseys that were worn by common players. My goal was to get a RS jersey from every year the team wore some sort of commemorative patch. Jim

Here are a few pics from my Thome display room.. Roughly 12 game used jerseys and about 40 of his bats. Collection also includes cleats, gloves, and hats. Always looking for Thome game used items.

Outstanding Thome display! The Phillies turn back the clock jersey is one of my favorites. I've been watching the room photos closely and was wondering what cases you use for the jersey bat combos? Do you have a link to the company you purchase from? I really like the black background.

Thanks,

Abe, thanks for the props.. I got the phillies throw back from the Orioles.. Awesome gamer which he hit 2 homeruns in... Here is the website for the cases. About 107.00 each, easy to hang.

This is my sport room. Mostly football with some Cardinal and Yankee baseball items. Framed on the wall are autographs of Musial, Ken Boyer, Mantle & Maris. The Boyer was obtained by writing the team in 1958 and asking for a signed picture,FREE. The case has some of my game used football jerseys. The top shelf is all Kevin Greene. Te jerseys on the wall are not gamers just autographed. And my favorite sons (only) gamers from 4th grade to college.

I am very impressed by he collections shown here and the inventive ways of displaying. The bat racks on he ceiling are really good.

Thomecollector,

I had that case made by a customer of mine that owns a big cabinet company in Alabama. It was a proto type made just for jerseys that I had thought about selling. The question all got down to, how would you ship it? So I have never done anything else with it.

I live in SE Missouri, Cape Girardeau, about 100 miles due south of St. Louis.

The only way we figured we could ship them was less glass. I have the UV protective glass in mine and it is 1/8" thick. I knw it would not make it off the first truck intact.

I've enjoyed seeing contributions to this thread since it got started...this is what our hobby is all about! We moved to a new home a few months ago, and I finally finished my "sports room" this week. I went with the slatwall/tempered glass solution mentioned in another thread. Not the cheapest way to go, but definitely worth the time and money. My wife is a lifelong Cardinals fan and I'm a lifelong Cubs fan....so she has her side and I have mine...

Rob,

Nice room! I was wondering about your Pujols items. Are any of the Pujols items other than the glove on display autographed? Also, were you able to photomatch the Carolina Clubs pujols bat in your collection? And where is the 2004 Pujols World Series bat?

RobSteinmetz
08-06-2007, 10:28 AM
Thanks for the kind words. I'll post some updated display room pictures...these are really outdated. In terms of your Pujols questions, I don't have a Carolina Clubs bat in my collection (never have). My 2005 home Pujols jersey is autographed, as was my 2001 home rookie jersey (I have since sold the rookie jersey to a friend who made me an offer I couldn't refuse). In the photos currently posted, the 2004 World Series bat is barely visible in the lower right corner of the Cardinals case. Updated pictures coming soon...

Hi Rob ,
Very nice display room (also nice items in the cases) . Actually looks better than The Ted Williams Museum in the Trop . Your cases are tons nicer and look professionally made .

Wait a minute ! I thought Cardinal fans hated Cub fans and visa versa ??????

A Cubs fan married a Cardinal's fan? Love trumps all ..... LOL :D

Hey Roger - Yes I do have a couple of other Thome items besides the jersey, bat, and hat in the picture (nothing major, just a couple of different style Phillies hats), and sorry, I'm not interested in moving any of them. While I'm always open to a trade, I'm not looking for anything else of Thome's except maybe that Phillies helmet he wore for three years here. All my jerseys are game used or game worn as some of them are warm ups. All All Star game warmups from 2002 on are MLB authenticated and hologramed. The exception being the 07 Howard home run deby jersey which doesn't state being worn by Howard as the other respective jerseys do, but is hologramed and has paperwork. I didn't go after this year's editions as they were listed as unworn backup jerseys signed by the player. Nice but not for the money they went for.

To another interested party, the locker is from the visitor's locker room at Vet Stadium. The Carlton plaque in the Carlton jersey case is the plaque that was used at the Vet on the Wall of Fame. Also not available, but THANKS for the interest!

Thanks for the compliments and interest!

Ken -

Just one of those 'light goes off' moments... I had just rolled out the blue carpet piece that covers the concrete floor for most of that area and laid down for a moment... and while I was laying there looking at the joists, the idea just came to me... I need to make all the 'hanging' space I can as the walls are solid concrete!!!

I'm glad you like it...

Here's a pic of my latest case pick up - it's a nice sized document display case from the Virgin Records that just closed here in Denver... since I do own quite a few cards - mostly all AU or GU sets - I needed a way to show them as well. I bought three 8' sections of corner trim and cut them to equal 20" lengths and simply have them sitting on screws punched into the corkboard backing to make shelves for the cards.

The case cost me $45 and the locks and trim cost another $30 or so... not bad for this large of a case!!!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v738/xpress34/Basement/NewBasementCardCase1.jpg

And for those who might be wondering - Top L is Jeannie Finch, Bob Motley and Summer Sanders, Top R is the UD SweetSpot Announcers set(Berman, Cohn, Gammons, Patrick, Stuart).

The other cards:

L side - 2000 Revolution Game Ball Set (25 cards - I NEED Eric Milton if anyone has him!) - all cards are AU on a piece of GU MLB Ball. Set includes Bonds, Maddux, Johnson and A-Rod

R side - 2004 Leaf Limited Cuts SILVER Set (25 cards - COMPLETE) - all cards are AU on a 'manufactured' material strip in team Color and #'d to either 50 or 100 depending on the player. Except for Will Clark, Dale Murphy, Mark Prior and Don Mattingly, the other 21 cards are ALL HOFers. In the GOLD set version, each card is numbered to that Player's jersey #. I do own the Gold Nolan Ryan #34/34!
