My wife works for a museum exhibit design company and they can make those cases with museum quality fabrics, glass, etc. They are not cheap (like $500-$750) but they display really nicely and are literally used in museums like the HOF. I have one that they are working on now. I can put you in touch with the shop that does their fabrication if anyone is interested. Nice cases for high-end stuff are hard to come by and I like having these types of custom cases where you can display multiple items and rotate them.

Good luck with the construction Konerko- be sure to post the finished product! Hope it turns out well.

I just can't compete with you guys - and I'm not sure I'd want to. I have far too much personal stuff, political stuff, and other interests to ever have a sports room that large. This is the extent of my on-display sports collection. I have other items that are not on display, but that is fine by me. I might eventually want a sports memorabilia room, but that's about as far as I'd go.

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j16/frikativ54/BagwellDisplay.jpg I am looking for another pair of cleats to fill the bottom right portion of this display case, hence my posts in the Wanted subforum.

That's pretty much it.

skube;
let me tell you a story about that helmet; it is sold by the way. i bought it as a greg brock gamer. when i received it, i noticed that the helmet had been painted all blue, but could still see the outline of the white panel.
i used some waterbased solvent that soften the blue paint and with a little elbow grease and a few hours, that is what was underneath! the stripper didn't harm the white paint nor harm the plastic. i washed the paint off and gave it a quick buff.
the pics i took of the process are in the drive of my old computer that crapped out and i can't get them extracted. but i was surprised when i saw that it was the older style.
i restore helmets, and that was the first one i did!:D

Sorry, I tried about 15 different angles and I really have to get close up before you can read the names and only about 9 bats show at a time. I have about 310 used Mariners bats starting from '77 running through this year. Ichiro is the big hole and Omar Vizquel is the little one. Just about every other big name is well represented as well as many obscure M's.

Thanks!

SKYKING & AROD, thanks for the props. Yes, that is granite on the bar and back bar. The basement is a rear walkout so it has plenty of natural light. When my wife and I built this house I really wanted to do some extra things with the basement to make it different from the other homes in the neighborhood. I know from experience that when it comes to resale in the area I live, two things usually make or break a home, the kitchen and basement. Women love kitchens and men love basements. We have been in the house for about two years now and I'm ready to sell and build again and add some other ideas to the ones we used on this house. I'm pretty fortunate as I work for a wholesaler in the electrical, plumbing, lighting & HVAC business and I am able to get everything in those areas below cost so it saves me a ton of money.

One of the nicest basements I have seen. I agree, my wife is always in the kitchen, and I can always be found in the basement. In fact, she says I "hide" down there. While that may be so, it is where the sportsroom is and where the computer is. Not much going on upstairs except fighting with our 2 kids so it is no wonder I make my escape whenever I can...

The jersey in the case is from 1938 and it had the 1939 Centennial patch put on when the jersey was recycled to the minors the following season.

I built both my cases and the bat racks. It's really not that difficult and a fraction of the cost of a professional case.

Tone, The jersey framing was done by Sports Gallery Web out of California. They do a really nice job and will work out a deal if you get a bunch of stuff done at the same time. Their webpage is http://www.sportsgalleryweb.com/customframing.htm

In terms of cost they run $350 to $700 depending on options (UV Glass, etc) and the number of jerseys you get done. They have a price outline on their page. If you get a bunch done they will usually work with you. Give them a call, they will take good care of you.

If you have any other questions, feel free to e-mail me gregguy@hotmail.com

Sweet room/ hall/ guest room Berg. Your last photo sparked a question for you or anyone. The ball and card wood base holder you have is made by Ultra Pro. Are those UV protected like other ball cubes? On the box or description there is no mention of it, so I wanted to know what others thought? I have a few of them, but am thinking about replacing them unless they will get the job done.

BergerKing22784
06-04-2008, 08:37 PM
I am really not sure if they are or not. I am not even sure they are ultra pro. so far those baseballs have not turned on me even though some in ball cubes are. Signed baseballs make me sad... I started off as an autograph collector still am but now all my purchases are game used stuff. I stopped getting baseballs signed because of all the problems they face over time.

Hey Rose14!

Where did you find those Stadium name signs? or did you make them yourself? Very nice touch!!

TAY1038, I commissioned a guy from Michigan to make these for me several years ago. He had a supply of some very old window frames from an old farm house and he would use those to make the frames. The rest is new wood that has been painted and distressed to look weathered.

I got it at Hobby Lobby. They are 130.00, but every other week they are half off it seems. Got it for about 70 with tax. It just has a cusion back that comes off. Looks like it is made to tack the jersey to that board. Obviously I didnt want to put holes in the jersey. I went to wal mart andgot a small screw in hook (.74 cents) hand screwed it to the top and just folded over a hanger and hung it on that.

They also have smaller ones (22X28) I believe for 100.00 or 50.00 on sale.

The one I got is 33X40

Hobby Lobby does seem to have a half off sale every time I am in there. Store in my town has been out of those cases for awhile but I may have to keep checking after seeing how yours turned out. Very nice display!

I came across this renovation. This guy took his 1 car garage and made it into an above ground MAN CAVE which is very cool and themed it for the Florida Gators!

I wanted to attach part of his story:

The renovation included custom woodwork and shelves for the homeowner to spotlight and safely stow his Hall of Fame–worthy collection. Among the goods in the 13-by-22-foot room are jerseys signed by Heisman trophy winners Steve Spurrier, Danny Wuerffel and Tim Tebow; replica Heisman statuettes; real championship rings, and replica trophies from Florida’s conference and national titles in football and basketball; game-worn cleats and gloves of Emmitt Smith, Jevon Kearse and Chris Leak; a football from the 2007 BCS championship game between Florida and Ohio State; and a piece of the court on which the Gators basket ball team won the 2007 NCAA crown.

The prized coup—a Dallas Cowboys helmet worn by Smith during the game in which he broke Walter Payton’s career rushing record—stemmed from the homeowner’s interest in electronics. He and Smith had crossed paths at Florida and struck up a friendship when the homeowner impressed the future NFL star with a decked-out van (it included a whopping 56-speaker system) he entered in car stereo competitions.

“Emmitt wore a different helmet in each quarter of the game where he broke the record. He broke it in the third quarter, and everything from that run went to the Hall of Fame. For the other three helmets, supposedly one is in [Cowboys owner] Jerry Jones’ house, one is in Emmitt’s house, and the other is in mine.”

In some recent correspondence with another forum member, we were talking about bat displays. I had taken some pictures to share with him some things I had done in my gu room in our basement. Sorry for the poor quality. I have trouble with picture clarity in low lighting situations. Anyway, since I had these handy, I thought that I would post them here.

Mike

Mike, thanks for your post. Sorry, no Manny bats to trade at the moment. Although Manny isn't with my team anymore, he's probably the most pure hitter I've had the opportunity to watch in my lifetime. As far as Manny being Manny, I've got mixed emotions that pretty much run the full gamut, but this isn't the place to go into it. Anyway, Manny will continue to be a part of my Red Sox collection for a very long time. Thanks again.

Awesome room. I enjoy seeing what others have done for ideas. I built my room years ago and it has undergone a facelift of late as I have been off for months awaiting surgery that will take place on Thursday. I have the exact same pool table, but it has been in our storage room for years as wife thinks kids will trash my room. It'll make it in there one day!

Bob, thanks for your comment. I have always enjoyed seeing what items everyone has and how they display them. I actually got the vertical bat holders built into the chair railing idea from someone else on the forum who posted pics. The oak lath for mounting the pictures came from a restaurant in Minnesota. Like many here, I, too, had spent quite a few years gathering the items currently in my collection. When the time presented itself for the opportunity to refinish the room and hallway to display my stuff, that process became almost as exhilarating as collecting itself. And, now the displaying part is still part of an on-going process. It all makes for a lot of enjoyment. Sharing it with people like you guys who understand, makes it that much more enjoyable.

Bob, good luck and hope all goes well with your surgery.

First, I want to say thanks to all who contacted me after my recent robbery story. I appreciate all of your comments. If I didn't get back to you, I apologize. It's been a roller coaster ride to say the least.

I am not quite done with my man room (man cave) but I made a few more additions. I still have a Jerry Rice jersey to get framed for the wall that has the bats leaning. I also ordered a 3-bat rack to place underneath the Favre jersey.

Also, someone on the forum (jlind, I think) had asked about Bruce Hurst Red Sox items. The framed Red Sox jersey is Hurst's from the 1987 season. I bought it several years ago, possibly from a forum member, and was very excited when I came across an '88 Donruss card that showed him possibly wearing the jersey. The 75th anniversary of Fenway Park patch is visible on the card and I'm not sure how many jerseys would have been issued to a pitcher that year.

Anyway, thanks again to all. It is appreciated. Enough of that... here are the pics...

Thanks for posting all the great images everyone. Great looking displays......they have inspired me.

Not the best pics unfort., but finally was able to display some of my older 1900's-era gloves and a 19th century bat. Paired them with original baseball photos and period cards.

Found inexpensive shadow-box frames with magnetic lids at "Winners/Homesense (might be a Canadian-only chain?). They flip open fron the front and allow for easy access and quick changes of items on display.

Next room on the list will have some 1980's/'90's game used Blue Jays items. chris

Okay guys... I decided to revive a few of these 'Man Cave' / 'Trophy Room' / 'Home Museum' forums since I recently updated my Man Cave...

I used the ideas of some others and purchased 4 of the 5-Shelf Black Bookcases from Wally World (Wal-Mart) for $30 ea and 2 of the short 3-Shelf Black Bookcases for $20 ea and used my existing Mannequin Collection and other cases to create a more uniform and 'flowing' feel to my 'Personal Museum'...

1st, I had to remove my Nolan Ryan Jerseys from these frames and moved the frames to my Loft / Office to show off the Modano jerseys:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v738/xpress34/Basement/Loft.jpg

Now, the Basement itself... 1st the WIDE Angle views:

And NOW, a little more 'detailed' Case by Case (Narrow View) of the basement...

FIRST - The Vintage Nokona Catcher's Gear w/ Vintage Wilson Cleats on a Vintage Kansas City Transit Railways Company Team Uniform with Actual KCTRR Lantern and my Timex 'Rounder' Electric display case...

Next stop... Matt Holliday 'Mounted Memories' Jersey w/ 'The Slide' inscription topped by Matt's GU 2007 WS Hat (Auto & Inscribed) w/ his original Oil Painting for his 2005 Diamond Kings Card on Top... next to it is my Luis Gonzalez Collection...

Next Stop - Cooperstown and the Ryan Express... My 1993 Ryan Jersey and Hat (Authentics) - Auto'd - with the Bronze Casting of Ryan's hand on top of the case...

More Ryan - BP Jersey (ST Gamer from his time as a Special Assistant??? It is a SIZED - 50 - Majestic)...

Next up, my new 'baby' (THANKS ANDREW LANG!!!) - my GU 2006 Matt Holliday All-Star Jersey (Matt auto'd and inscribed it for me when the Cards were here) and my Pujols Authentic BP Jersey topped with a GU/AU Pujols hat from 2001 w/ ROY inscription!!!

Glad you like it... as far as the size, the basement is unfinished currently , so it appears that I have more space than I do...

When the wife and I went house hunting years back, I said I had TWO requirements - a 2 car garage that we can actually park our cars in (we live in Colorado - snow, winters, sleet, etc...) and either an extra bedroom, or basement where I could put all of my stuff...

Davis -

I know all about AZ - my family is all in Tucson and Surprise now... hell, a house with a basement there would be worth the extra digging cost due to it remaining cool all the time... the issue would be keeping it waterproofed from when the rain finally starts to soak into the soil (after all the washes have overflowed!) and then it soaks in quick and fast!

Glad you liked the room!

I thought I would take my turn and jump in....My wife agreed when shopping for our home that we (I) needed a dedicated space for my collection. I got very lucky and found one with a finished half basement. I would have loved a full basement because things are a little snug but it's better than nothing and is a great a space.

Red Raider - '83, '85, '87... then went to UNT (Mean Green) '89-'91.

Was also pulling USAF Reserve duty and doing lots of TDY's in between to pay for school...

Hope it turns out well.

does this company have a website?

GUNS UP!!!

Too bad we're not looking anywhere near last year's team... actually, this is an anniversary of sorts... last year on Halloween weekend, the wife and I road tripped to Lubbock - actually Amarillo and then drove into Lubbock on Saturday - for the Texas game just to tailgate... we didn't have any tickets to the game... e just parked, walked around and talked to people - hung out at Chili's to watch most of the game... and bought lots of new Tech Swag!!!

the cases are expensive, but it didnt really make much since to me to spend several hundred to a thousand dollars on a gu item and then put it in a 99 cent case. Plus these cases came in cherry which matched all the stuff i have framed.

Sorry for the lame photo my digital camera was smashed at our Halloween party. Back in February I kind of laughingly commented about only have ceiling left to hang bats. Jeff(Soxbats), asked if I was serious and we exchanged a few emails about ideas. Here is what I finally got up on the ceiling tonight. It is 2-2x4's, brackets, and molding. It holds 37 bats and actually looks pretty cool. I will be making a matching one in the next couple weeks. Once the other is up all but about 20 of my 415 Mariners bats will be displayed in a 10'x12' room. Now I can really push the wife to let me expand into another room.....yeah, probably not going to happen.

Yes, they do slide in one end with a little stopper once it is loaded.

Yes, I may very well be interested in adding another Jamie Allen!

I finished my 3 ceiling racks. I now have all 430 bats displayed with room for about 30 more. Once the last rack if full I will have about 111 on my ceiling. My brother and I did have a "cave-in" during construction. I took a few off the dome but my scunion was fine. I did, however, get a nasty knot on my shin. We wore helmets when loading bats after that and were a bit wiser about the flexibility of metal brackets.

My family is in construction and has remodeled banks so we always pull the doors out and put them in our house with concrete. Right now we have some wine, guns, and some of my stuff in there. Someday I would really like to get one of those old fashion huge round vault doors, you know the ones you see from the 20s in big city banks. They are a pain to put in though. I'll upload a few more pictures later this week.

we poured concrete around the room and lowered it in with a crane and had it brought here on a flat bed truck. I want to say it weighs like 3,000 pounds. It needs to be polished soon and I need to organize my collection some time and put up framed jerseys on the wall.

I had to show this unique room from this hockey collector and builder Todd Jensen from Calgary, Alberta. Nice to have a 14 foot ceiling to work with!

His jumbotron cost approx. $8,500 and the big screen is retractable back into his custom made wall unit where he has a huge bobblehead and photo collection.

I think I've just seen heaven!! :D
Wow, that is just an amazing room... Everything in there is just perfect...ahh someday.. someday!

Wow! That Todd Jenson Hockey collection memorabilia room in Calgary is likely the coolest memorabilia room I think I have ever seen (not to mention the view this guy has of the outside from his home). Truly incredible with the TV screens everywhere! I am in awe! Thanks for posting the photos!

Thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us. Wow!

I love the Shaq shoes. I finally unpacked some more boxes and got out Shaq's final shoe he wore with the Lakers (post-season). I also got an awesome Orlando Magic Reebok pump shoe when Shaq was a Rookie.

We have other construction projects planned where I can best display my Washington sports collection in its own dedicated room. Right now those items are in closets and garment racks and in boxes.

Thanks, only 1950's era retro candies allowed in there! LOL

We have space to add the final touch to the room which would be a Coca Cola Vendo 44 1950's soda machine like this:

Whats cool is you can still find the old Coke bottles that fit the machine, and yes they cost more than 10cents each LOL.

We recently completed our basement project, and I followed Rob's lead with the slatwall display case... I'm very happy with it.

Here are a couple of pictures from the project... now the fun begins of hanging up the collection throughout the basement. From start to finish, it took 3 months of off and on work to complete.

In October, it looked like this:

And now, it looks like this:

Original Wrigley Field locker from the home clubhouse built into the wall under the stairs.

Thanks for all of the kind words on our basement and the displays. I've received a number of questions on the glass in the display cases, so I figured that I would post a reply to the board for others that are wondering the same thing.

I decided to go with 6 separate pieces of plexi glass instead of convention glass. They slide next to each other on each given side on tracks provided by the glass company. There were a couple of reasons that I went with the plexi over the glass: (a) Cost. Glass would have been ~$1,500 plus the track costs. Plexi was ~$250. (b) Weight. The glass would have been WAY heavier and could have bowed the case over time. (c) Safety. With three little kids I was not going to risk the glass falling and shattering on them.

There is a total of 9 low voltage puck lights in the case (available at any hardware store or Amazon). It does not get too warm in the case with the lights on, and I really do not see a glare with the plexi. Word of warning, make sure that the puck lights are securely fashioned as you don't need that extremely hot bulb falling on one of your items in the case.

Geoff -

Glad you like it!!!

My focus is The Ohio State Buckeyes and the New York Yankees, my two favorite teams. The Lemieux jersey is a gamer, photomatched to the picture hanging to it's right.

I also collect hockey gamers and have a closet full of them.

Enjoy.

I'll finally show off my "man cave". I'm a really casual collector of signed and game used stuff and I just typically just pepper my basement with items. I like them more for decoration then to show off how big of a sports geek I am. (don't want to scare people)

Like to keep it low key, but still interesting. You don't walk in the room and think "weirdo sports guy", but a sports fan will still pickup on the items and ask questions. I've had a few people over who wanted to hold a bat once they saw them.

I'm really into video games too so this room doubles at my 360/ps3/wii lair.

No, but it is the best example of a retail authentic Payton I've ever seen and I've owned a handful of them.
This one is the closest to his actual game jerseys I've seen inasmuch as the nameplate lettering placement is correct, it has the pre-1986 Wilson cloth tag, and it's the correct size.......three details that are just never found together on retail versions.
It's basically exactly like Walter's actual jersey.
