Unfortunately, I have sold most of my favorite game used items over the last year, so they are now owned by some one else! My favorite item that I own is the Steve Garvey game used bat that I purchased from a forum member a month ago. I am 39 years old and growing up in Southern California he was my favorite player when I was a kid.

My fav game used item I currently own is my 2006 GCL Adrian Cardenas Auto jersey. This kid was the 2006 Highschool POY for BA and he did real well in the GCL. Word has it that he is a throwback type of player and should end up as a power hitting second baseman. Should be fun to watch next year!

My current favorite is a 1995 Yankees road jersey worn by Randy Velarde. The jersey still have the armband and 7 that memorialized Mickey Mantle's death in tact. I've been searching for one of these for some time, Steiner came through.

My favorite piece is my 1971 California Angels Andy Messersmith home jersey. She needs a little restoration work in the new year, but one day I'll have this hanging on my office wall. The 4 on the back and front was removed and the 7 was centered for minor league use by Richard Laubert in 1972. 1971 was the final year the Angels used flannels and the first year for the new style jersey with the lower case "angels" and haloed "a". McAuliffe size 46.

Geoff,
I'm glad you like the Hanley helmet that much. I hated to let it go. I'm glad to see you still have it. At the time it was one of the nicest items I owned but it didn't fit in the direction I wanted my collection to go. As I'm sure you all know.....you can't collect everything. It gets to the point where in order to buy new items you have to thin out the herd and sell some older items.
As far as my favorite items go they would have to be my 4 game used Jonathan Papelbon gloves. His first glove from his first ever glove contract with Rawlings in 2004, his first Boston game used glove from 2005 and both gloves he used in Boston ....as well as the All Star Game in 2006.

Thanks
Scott

My two favorite items are my game used 1976 Johnny Bench bat. And, my 1985 game used Pete Rose Mizuno bat. Bot have great use. Bench was the World Series MVP that season and, of course, Pete broke the hits record in 1985.

I heard he was corkin' in 85. How would you check for that?

CansecoPower33
12-26-2006, 06:26 PM
I'd imagine the barrel would sound different if you knocked it. It should make a more hallowed out sound. Look for any signs of a sealed opening on the top of the bat. Seriously though, I doubt Rose would let a corked bat out of his sight long enough to slip into a collection.

I believe they cut one up a year or two ago at some auction house. It was a Mizuno bat, heavily taped. No cork to be found.

There's a lot of them that tie for second but probably first would be a Joe Torre Adirondack from Mets years, hammered with use, handle grooved and uncracked that he signed for me. He said he would "knurl" the handles on the bats he liked best and wondered how this one got away from him without being cracked. At first he gave me a funny accusational type look, like he was accusing me of thievery. Then he chuckled a little and signed it. It was a good experience though. Not like the bad one I had with Nettles.

my rocco Baldelli tampa tarpons 6/24/06 game used jersey, photo matched with the dvd of the game, how many baseball jerseys can you legitmately say were worn when a particular player had a triple in the game used jersey?

Also, for football, my Randall McDaniel 2001 pro bowl (after 00 season) game used jersey, obtained directly from his agent.

Howard Wolf
hblakewolf@patmedia.netI put a well used and VERY cracked bat in front of Nettles at a signing around 1990 or so and Mr. Nettles proceded to ask me, paraphrasing of course, "Where the F did you get this from?" I told him I got it from a friend of mine who lived in Detroit. He then said, "Yeah?, and where the F did he steal it from?". I told him he didn't have to sign it if it was that big of a deal. Besides it was a little uncomfortable having him using the language he used in front of little kids who were in line. He signed it with "attitude" but at that point I really didn't care if he did or not.

Of all of the major league equipment that I have collected, my Bobby Grich Red Wings hat from 1971-the year he was named Minor League Player of The Year--will remain mine 'til the end. I had the pleasure of seeing at least 40 games that season, including all 7 games of the Junior World Series and at the age of 15 Grich was far and away my favorite player. The hat is, as much as anything else, a direct connection to my youth.

i always like his intensity. Yeah he said alot of stupid things like alot of people do when they are in there mid-20's but you never had to question if he was giving it his all out on the mound. and when he was on he was damn near unhittable. I've also met him a few times and he is one of the more fan friendly players i have met right up there with Jim Thome. One great thing is like you said he is not a real popular player so i can pick up his items for a real low price i now have two game used bats and three game worn jerseys and always looking for more. I'm actually going to sell my 99 Arod Gamer blonde bigstick if your intrested

JROCKER

I'm glad you liked the Rocker jersey. The first time I noticed Rocker was when he played in the World Series. I was on a hunting trip in Idaho. I left our camp to visit a friend in Burley ID. When I got to the hotel Rocker was pitching. I thought WOW. I bought his World Series away jersey from Grey Flannel. I think I paid $2250.00 at the time, when he was hot. When I sold most of my baseball jerseys a while back I think I got around $600.00. I wish he would have kept his mouth shut!!.

The Kevin Greene jersey has tremendous wear. That is why I like it so much. I have 1, of the 2 he had in 97, 49er home jerseys as well a his 90 LA Ram and a 99 Panther. He is in Iraq right now visiting the troops.

I know there are alot of people who have insane collections, but if you had to pick your favorite game used piece you own, what would it be?

Also why is it your favorite and what (if any) story is behind the piece.

Please, just pick one, your absolute favorite. Also, if you are able, post pictures of the item. I'm anxious to see what everyone's favorites are.

I'm not sure this qualifies as "game used," but the favorite item in my collection is the locker name plate that Cal gave me after the last home game of the '88 season...It was really the only item I had the balls to ask him for, but he gladly complied. Some of the younger collectors will probably be surprised to see an actual nameplate devoid of holograms, multiple colors, etc.

This gamer is one I hope I never have to part with. I got it at an auction in Chicago this past fall along with 7 other vintage game bats after seeing them listed on E-bay. The bats pictures listed at auction did not enlarge but from the what I could make out--knew they had to be something. I drove to the auction house to look at them in person and the first bat I saw was this one. It is a 1936-39 Jimmie Foxx gamer. I went back several days later and bid in person winning most of the ones I wanted. I later found out that one other collector who is a friend of mine and I were actually bidding against each other without knowing it.
I had John Taube's restorer redo the finish on this bat and fill a couple of display holes. It can from a former major league's scout collection. Taube's restorer does a marvelous job and it was well worth the the money spent and the time it took to get it back into my hands. I doubt I will ever run across another "high-end" game bat like this again but that is the thrill of the hunt and never say never.

That's a sweet Foxx bat. Would like to see the whole bat. My favorite item would probably be my Larry Bird 86-87 home jersey that got a mears A10 grade. But, my Bill Russell game used 60's shorts are a close second. I never thought I'd be able to get a game used Russell item. I mean, his jerseys go for 40K! So, when I got these I was pretty pumped.

Great question. There are a couple of items that standout as favorites for different reasons. My James Worthy gamers because he gave them to me as a kid and that created a memory I'll never forget. My 1937 Alameda Kono All-Star jersey is a favorite because of the history behind the item and to date it's the only one I've seen of it's kind.

I haven't had it long, and it's not anywhere near the most expensive item in my collection, nor is it from the most famous player...but my Micah Owings gamer, broken during a pivotal game in the Diamondbacks great (and incredibly fun) season last year, and signed and inscribed by Micah at this years Fan Fest, may very well be my favorite item at this point.

I'm a huge Buffalo Sabres fan so all my favorite pieces are Buffalo Sabres items
1. My pair of blue seats from Buffalo Memorial Auditorium. Took me forever to acquire them

2. My 1998-1999 Stu Barnes Sabres home jersey. It's Stu's first game worn Sabres jersey after being traded to Buffalo from Pittsburgh. I researched it for 8 months after I bought it since it had no LOA. I photomatched it and videomatched it to the 1999 Stanley Cup playoffs in the series against Boston and Toronto. It's in a case in my living room.

3. 2003-2004 Daniel Briere Sabres home jersey. My daughter was named Briere after Daniel Briere when she was born in April of 2004. This jersey is Danny's second alternate captain jersey. I was fortunate a friend in Switzerland was nice enough to sell me this jersey. My friend collects as many Briere jerseys as possible and never sells them. He owns over 30 of Briere's gamers. It's a treasure to me to have a Briere jersey from the year my daughter Briere was born. It's also in a jersey case on the living room wall.

A couple of my favorites are two of my earliest Marty Cordova items. The first is from the summer before he was a freshman in high school in 1984, playing in the Senior League Tournament - 7/14/84. His mother would pay kids to get his home run balls and she would calligraphy them in the stands. She might have been the Original Ballhawk!

The second is a "jersey" he wore the summer of 1987, after he graduated from high school. He toured Europe with the Baseball Ambassadors for 19 days. I also have his passport from the trip (not pictured):

It was a tough one but as of right now it's gotta be my Brandon London N.Y. Giants jerset from 2007. Only worn during preseason because he was then on the practice squad, and its the closest to a photomatch that I have out of any of my jerseys. Plus I didn't spend much on it at all!

Unfortunately, we don't live in the safest of neighborhoods and a couple of apartments in our building have been burgalrized over the years so she decided it would be more secured to have it stored in a safe deposit box. We're working on moving soon and hopefully a new location will allow for us to display it next to our wedding photos.

Well, the poster isn’t game used, but the bat has got to be one of the best known game used items of the modern era.

My favorite items are those that are personalized or that I have a personal connection to. The stories behind the items are more valuable (to me) than the items themselves.

I’ve given several items to the Hall of Fame over the years, and in 1997 went to Cooperstown to produce a poster of George Brett’s pine tar bat in support of Brett’s charitable foundation.

According to the HOF curator, I was the first person to hold the pine tar bat (other than museum officials) since they had received it from Brett. Note the white gloves I’m wearing.

We actually brought a suitcase filled with infield dirt from Kaufman Stadium to use as the background for the poster, and were delayed before boarding the flight to Albany to explain to airport security why we were carrying a bag full of dirt.

We shot the bat at 1:1, so it’s displayed on the poster at actual size. The poster was produced in a limited edition of 317, with Brett signing each poster. Another photo from that same shoot is on page 66 of the book ‘George Brett: From Here to Cooperstown’.

Yes, Barry Halper did indeed own this bat at one time. However, there was some dissention in KC that a limited partner in the Yankees owned this piece of important Royals history memorabilia and Brett actually traded some things back to Barry (some of which was bogus; but that is a different story for another day) to get the PineTar bat back. At that point either Brett or the Royals donated it to Cooperstown....

Great gesture by Barry Halper. He was the consummate collector. Barry had a pine tar can and other items related to the game in a framed display that included the bat. Someone removed it from this display at some point.

At the risk of risk of sounding like even more of a name dropper (ah, what the heck), Brett told me he hand delivered the bat to the HOF. To address any future questions about whether this was THE bat, he wrote the words "This is the pine tar bat" on the barrel.

He also told me, and I have never seen this story anywhere else, that in the dugout, as the bat was being examined, he said to his teammates "Watch this -- if they overturn it I'm going to go ape$3&!".

What's funny, according to Brett, is that he really wasn't that upset when the HR was overturned. But since he'd made that statement to his teammates, he felt like he needed to put on a show.

I don't know if that's true or not, but if it is, he should have won the Academy Award for Best Actor that year ;)

 Thanks, BTPH ... been working on it since 1994. Most fun I have ever had in collecting. Have a lot of other collectors to thank that did a lot of hard work. There were about 5-10 major collectors of his items and eventually I was able to buy all their collections. Lots of patience but eventually they lost interest and knew I planned to keep it all together. They did a lot of hard work to get "stuff" and it is fun to keep it all together.

I own a MeiGray registered Pavel Bure Jersey from their 94 Stanley Cup Final season. (Sorry, I still like typing that :p)

My fiance financed it and that's why it means so much. She found it on eBay, asked if it was worth the asking price and offered to pay for it. I flipped and offered to pay her back. She then said "I already paid" and smiled. God bless supportive women.

Hi Tim ~ Actually, about six of us were collecting seriously at the same time since about 1994, what one would miss the others would find. Early on his brother set up a website for him and they found a box in the family garage. Marty had no interest in keeping "stuff" so about a dozen very early items were sold on the website to help fund it.

Glad to hear someone else appreciates the collection. Marty had absolutely no ego tied up in his stuff - and actually I think he thought we were all a bit daft in collecting it. :o The Twins Pro Shops were a great source for major and minor league items, Sports Collectors Digest was nearly a catalog every week, and as the internet and eBay came along, we all had a great time finding things. And, oh, things were much cheaper then! Eventually it all landed in one place. Down the road if Marty or his family ever have regrets in not saving things, I plan to just give it all back to them. The fun is the hunt, not just the owning.

Chris, to have an item created with your own hands like that is awesome. You inspired me to post another item, also created by hand, from my collection. In 1990, my wife painted a watercolor of Mickey Mantle for my 30th birthday, and he signed it later that year.

Not only did he not hesitate to sign a piece of personal art, Mantle was exceeding gracious. He studied the painting for a minute, took his time to apply an extra large signature, and said to my wife "Did you paint that? That's really good."

It's always nice when a boyhood hero knocks another one out of the park...

Since I'm a die-hard Saints fan, my favorite game used jersey would be my 1984 game used John Hill jersey, which I've photo-matched from an old Saints calendar. The only problem with it is the name-plate was removed back in the 80's, but it's got some serious use, stains and repairs. Btw, John Hill was the center for the Saints when Archie Manning played, but in '84 Richard Todd was the QB.

Was just admiring this former bat of yours again. Did you ever figure out what kind of wood that is with all swirling? Doesn't look like oak, ash, or any modern bat wood. Not really a curly maple, or is it?

Handsome indeed.

I noticed that there is a similar Jim Palmer nameplate in the Baltimore display in the HOF.
