Sports memorabilia collectors, set your calendars for Jan. 20.
That's the day bidding will begin on Alex Rodriguez 500th home run ball, The Associated Press reported Tuesday night.
The company in charge will be SCP Auctions, which also sold the balls Barry Bonds hit for his 755th and 756th home runs -- to tie and surpass Hank Aaron's all-time record. According to the company's Web site, those two balls sold for $186,750 and $752,467, respectively.
SCP Auctions, founded in 1979, is one of the largest auctioneers in sports memorabilia and cards. Other items sold by the company include a Babe Ruth-signed bat used to hit the first home run at Yankee Stadium (sold for $1,265,000, according to the company's Web site) and the contract selling Ruth from the Red Sox to the Yankees ($996,000).
Rodriguez's 500th home run, hit Aug. 4, 2007, was recovered at the old Yankee Stadium by a college student named Walter Kowalczyk. The Yankees' third baseman hit the milestone homer at 32 years old, making him the youngest in baseball history to reach the feat. Through 16 years in the big leagues, Rodriguez's 583 home runs makes him tied for eighth on the all-time home run list with Mark McGwire, who, like A-Rod did last spring, recently admitted to using performance-enhancing substances as a player.
