I am looking for some info on this jacket. Supposedly worn by Ryne Sandberg in 1987. I personally have never seen a strip tag in a jacket before, but then again I don't ever buy jackets. Wondering if this was common practice, or if this is just another Lou Lampson slip up?

I personally know the seller, and Ferg is a GREAT guy and in no way is he trying to pass something not legit, I just question this item.

Any info would be appreciatted and passed along to him (he is not a member here)

Thanks - BIGSTIG

the problem is the "diamond collection" tag. the "diamond collection" was a label given to "on-field" type merchandise from official, licensed suppliers of major league baseball. new era caps were part of the diamond collection because those were the caps worn on the field. ditto for russell jerseys, starter jackets, and a few other manufacturers. the issue is that the "diamond collection" label was first used around 1991/92. the label wasn't exclusive or part of any single manufacturer. it was used by many manufacturers to denote "official" on-field-esque (ie: pro cut) style gear. rawlings was the "official" jersey supplier up until 1991 yet their jerseys never bore the diamond collection tag. for jerseys it first came into play in 1992 when russell took over the MLB contract. i think new era began using it on their caps around 1991. long story short, i don't believe any piece of clothing was sporting the diamond collection moniker way back in 1987 as the strip tag suggests.

I have NEVER seen a tag like that in a Starter jacket from ANY MLB club. Sounds like one of Lampson's speciic frequent screwups...he sees a tag and falls in love with the item, regardless of whether the tag, or other aspects of the item make sense.

Also...Sandberg took a size 42 in 1987...a medium is a size 38-40...you do the math.

"ferg" needs to pinpoint the exact year starter began using the diamond collection tag. it really hovers sometime around 1990 or so. look, here's a style that the white sox last used in 1990:

yet here's a jacket purported to be from 1988 (no diamond collection):

i just don't think the diamond collection extended as far back as 1987.

and as dave said, i've never seen a strip tag like that in any starter jacket from any team.

Interesting thread. I don't know about the Cubs Starter jackets but I do have Giants Starter jackets both the heavy satin lined and the knit version from the years 1984-90 and on those, the Diamond collection version of the tag appears in those jackets used in 1989-90 The previous years all have the standard Starter tags. The "strip tag" is a new one on me-it almost appears that someone tried to copy a Rawlings uniform strip tag right down to the "T" for tapered with the name included.

Thanks for all the input. I have forwarded this thread to Ferg. Now it is up to him to act. I have told him multiple times I think it's a fake, but you know when you just don't want to believe you've been duped. Damn you Lou Lampson...Damn you!!!

Well, this is a 1988 NY Mets David West gameworn Starter DIAMOND COLLECTION jacket. As mentioned before,I first saw this jacket at the Mets Clubhouse Shop on Madison Avenue,NYC in 1990 and didn't buy it. I searched forever for it and finally found it on E-bay 2 years ago.
