View Full Version : Obscure jerseys from Amazing Players

I was thinking today that a really unique and interesting collection idea would be collecting jerseys from HOF quality players, from teams they aren't known for. While today's Free Agency allows for players to play forever for numerous teams, I'm referring to players who are known for a team but either started or ended their careers somewhere else. Here is my list of guys shirts I'd love to see or own. If you have other ideas or pic, I'd love to see them! I don't think I'd undertake actually obtaining many of these but I would love to see them!

Roger Maris Cleveland Indians or Kansas City A's. Everyone knows the season HR leader was a Yankee. He was however drafted by the Indians and played one season with each club before being traded to the Yanks. This is a perfect example of a jersey many people don't even know was worn.

John Smoltz Detroit Tigers. Smoltzie is a Brave, no matter who he plays with afterward, his number will be retired by the Braves and he will go to the Hall as a Brave. He was however drafted by the Tigers and traded to the Braves when he was just a young unknown pitcher. Anyone own his shirt or have pics?

These were the two biggies I wanted to know about but I have many other smaller caliber guys I want to hear about yours. A good example would be Thanks to John in Cleveland, I own my hero Kelly Gruber's Cleveland Indians ST shirt (his first I believe) and it goes nicely next to my GI Orioles shirt of his as well. While I'd certainly overpay for a Blue Jays shirt (and Please let me know if you see one for sale) If you wanna see a grown man jump up and down and squeal like a girl, show me his California Angels shirt from the 18 games he played in 1993

All sports welcome (Joe Namath Rams for example) this could be a really interesting thread. Thanks for contributing.

Who is the ONLY player to have played for ALL for of the Franchises that were NY based at some point in time? NYY, NYM, LAD (formerly Brooklyn Dodgers) and SFG (formerly NY Giants).

Great theme!

I would love to find a jersey of Hoyt Wilhelm from the 1969 Angels, and more recently Rickey Henderson and Eddie Murray from the Angels. I have seen several and own three Eddie Murray Angels bats. However, I have never seen or heard of any Rickey Henderson Angels bats. I have even looked at a few hundred photos of Rickey with the Angels, and cannot see any bats with the team name.

On the plus side, I was blessed enough to acquire three different styles of Mark Teixeira Angels game used jerseys from his short stint in Anaheim at the end of 2008. Now to find a Teixeira Angels Louisville Slugger bat with team name (those do exist).

Thanks for playing along guys! This thread has been great fun to check in on and by far the most successful thread I have ever started.

I'll add the Dolan Dicked Over:

Patrick Ewing, one of the nba's 50 greatest players, 17th greatest college player as per espn, retired #33 with his Knicks and should have been liftime Knick. Patrick was forced however to leave and he did play for the Sonics and Magic.

Mark Messier, who I hated when he was a Ranger for his heroics in 1994 against my Canucks. I wish more than anything he didn't use my team as retrebution when Dolan didnt even tender him a contract. So:

Vancouver Canucks Mark Messier
Sonics or Magic Patrick Ewing

Another one of somewhat similar genre (which I once owned):

2003 ST Cubs uniform of Will Clark...the Cubs' nemesis in the 1989 NLCS became their friend that spring as he went to camp (in #22 jerseys with his name on back) to work with then-promising young 1B Hee Seop Choi.
